MMA Vs Karate

Karate and other traditional martial arts has been around for centuries.  In ancient time martial arts was outlawed and the farmers would have to hide their style of martial arts.  The nunchucks were used to beat rice, the sai was used to pick up bales of hay, the bow staff was used to carry buckets of water, etc.  The farmers had to protect themselves and their family.  Even Capoeira hid their martial arts in a beautiful display of acrobatics and dance.  All of these martial arts and many others were used to defend themselves from soldiers.

In today’s time we don’t have the Samurai coming by on their horses to attack and capture us, but what we do have is the school yard bully or attacker down the alleyway.  I have been training in the martial arts for 22 years now. I originally was Karate and that is where I earned my first degree black belt. I recently got my 2nd degree black belt in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Have you ever witnessed a altercation on the street or at a school?  How does the fight start, and how does the fight end?  Almost all fights start with wild swinging of the attackers hands and feet.  The reason why they swing so wild is because the attacker does not know how to fight and they’re in fear of getting hit, so this way they can get close to the victim, grab them and take them to the ground to overpower them.  This is at the point where traditional martial arts leaves you powerless and MMA gives you power.

Traditional martial arts like Karate, Kung Fu or Tao Kwon Do teach a a unpractical streetwise self defense.  MMA is a practical streetwise self defense.  With MMA you can defend yourself standing up with your hands and legs, or if grabbed from behind and taken to the ground.  With MMA you’ll have security knowing you can defend yourself in any situation, and of course with security comes self confidence.
