Tsarev tries to throw a few knees from his back but Good is all over him here. Good is thinking about passing to mount and he instead drops some heavy knees to the body. Good has Tsarev pressed against the fence and he drops some punches as Tsarev hooks a leg to semi-regain half guard. Now Tsarev has full guard but Good is still on top. Tsarev is trying to lock Good down defensively but Good starts throwing heavy punches and they’re getting through. He’s really throwing some heavy strikes from guard and Tsarev tries to kick him off but Good is now crouching over him and dropping big punches. Good passes to half guard and drops some punches to the body. Good again passes to side control with a minute left and now he passes to mount. Tsarev rolls into him and nearly sweeps him but Good escapes and dives back into his guard with a huge right hand. Good drops another right hand at the end of the round. 10-9 Good

Round two: Tsarev opens and he’s throwing some kicks. He scores with a couple leg kicks and he keeps up with them. They don’t look to be hurting him badly but Good rushes in for a clinch attempt and Tsarev escapes. Combination from Tsarev backs Good up and Good responds with a heavy leg kick. Good rushes in again but Tsarev fends him off and lands a nice right hand. Good steps forward and scores with a straight left but Tsarev lands a knee and again creates distance. Another kick from Tsarev and Good steps forward looking to throw punches. Body kick from Good and he rushes in, locking up Tsarev in the clinch and then dumping him on the ground. Good passes to side control and he’s dropping repeated right hands onto Tsarev. Good backs off and the ref allows Tsarev to stand up. Punch from Good connects near Tsarev’s eye.  Good swarms him with a big flurry of punches and Tsarev wilts along the fence and the ref jumps in.

Final Result: Lyman Good defeats Michail Tsarev via TKO at 3:54 of round two

Lyman advances to the finals where he will face Andrey Koreshkov. Stay tuned for Date and location.

TSMMA Toms River Student Battles ADHD with Martial Arts!

My 9 year old son started taking classes at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA about 3 months ago and it has made a huge impact on his life.  My son was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 5.  In addition, he has some low muscle tone and coordination problems.  He spent a great amount of time in both physical and occupational therapy with some good results, but he did not enjoy going.  He has always avoided sports of any kind because it has been a struggle for him both with the physical part as well as keeping focused enough to participate.  School has been a struggle as well.  He is extremely smart but has had a very difficult time keeping on task and completing work.  We have tried different ADHD medications only to have bad side effects.

My son has spent a great deal of his life struggling to do things that come so easily to other children.  I have searched and searched for answers to help him but to no avail.  I had read that Martial arts is supposed to be good for children with ADHD so I decided to give it a try and enrolled him at Tiger Schulmann’s.  It has been an amazing experience.  I have gone from seeing my son have low self esteem and no confidence in himself,  to a little boy who can focus in the MMA class and do what all of the other kids are doing.  The Head Instructor is amazing with the children.  He has the right amount of toughness, kindness, and patience.  He is an amazing teacher and works with the children until they master their MMA moves.  In addition, he reinforces all positive ideas such as a non quitting spirit and having confidence in yourself.  The lessons that he teaches about bullying and how to handle bullies is so valuable to children. My son never wanted to do an activity before and now he cannot wait until it is his day for class.

In addition to the improvement I have seen in my son’s focus and self esteem, I have seen physical improvements as well.  He is able to execute moves that in the past would have been very difficult for him because of his coordination problems.  When my 6 year old daughter approached me and wanted to join as well it was a no-brainer.  Now both of my children go and are loving every minute of it.  I cannot express how truly grateful I am for how much this experience has helped my child.  It is truly the best thing that I have ever done for him.  Thank you so much to Head Instructor Bobby Colontino and the staff at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA.  You have truly helped to change my son’s life.

My job occasionally takes me to some rather unsavory neighborhoods but I have been lucky to have had very few incidents over a 34 year career.  Two years ago I was in one of those bad neighborhoods – behind the Port authority bus terminal in NYC when a strange man began to yell crazily and wildly took a swing at me. I ducked but he clipped my ear and then he took off  up the street. This incident really bothered me and I told a friend about it.  My friend knew someone who had joined Tiger Schulmann’s who loved it.  I had been thinking of joining a Tiger Schulmann’s that had recently opened near my home.  I decided right then to join and am very glad I did.

I am a person who normally gets very bored by exercise which I usually find to be very repetitive and mind numbing. Tiger is the only exercise program that I have ever tried that holds my interest and I’m never bored. Tigers’ program requires you to use your physical body along with developing good memorization and mental strategies. There is also a good atmosphere of safety, respect and comradeship that develops between the students. I found that the students all push each other to do better in a friendly way. The training is combination of group exercise, while developing defensive and kickboxing skills along with personal attention from a highly experienced professional trainer.

When I first began at tiger – I was stiff, short of breath and the workouts seemed tough – I realized right away that I had gradually gotten out of shape.  But I was interested and determined and always felt better after each class. Two years later I am keeping up with students who are many years younger than myself, I’m far less stiff and seldom lose my breath.  For me the changes were barely noticeable because they were gradual but allot of other folks began to notice and have commented on the changes. Since joining Tiger  I have had people remark that I looked younger then my age and asked if I had done something with myself because I looked better.  I tell them that I have done nothing different in my life but kickboxing at Tiger Schulmann’s of Eatontown.

Working out at Tiger has given me numerous benefits besides being stronger and learning how to properly defend myself. I stand straighter and am no longer slump shouldered.  I am not easily winded.  I feel more confidence and life seems a little more valuable.   My guess is that I will never need to use my new defensive skills because I doubt that I put out “the easy target” vibe anymore.  Tiger Schulmann’s suits my life style, I’m in better condition than I have been in years, I feel more confident and now have some very good kickboxing skills. Sensei Tresca & Sensei Villanueva are great guys always push me to train hard and stay consistent  and if miss class witch seldom do because of my work schedule I will  always get that phone call from them motivating me to get back saying I know were you live Sensei Tresca tells me I will come pick you up if you forgot how to get hear pal. Then when I do Sensei V always gives me a great class and says nice to see you Bob.  Thanks guys I am really enjoying myself.

Bellator 78’s Lyman Good calls current champ Askren ‘a gatekeeper for the belt’

Bellator 78’s Lyman Good calls current champ Askren ‘a gatekeeper for the belt’

By: mmajunkie.com

Like most opponents in his position, Bellator’s inaugural welterweight champ Lyman Good found himself smothered by Ben Askren.

Good ceded his belt to the standout wrestler two years ago and has since worked to shore up his weaknesses in grappling.

Now, he’s confident a second meeting would go much differently, and he’s working to make a rematch a reality with a win over Michail Tsarev in the semifinals of Bellator’s season 7 tournament, which takes place Friday at Bellator 78.

“Askren is like the gatekeeper for the belt,” Good said.

Good (13-2 MMA, 6-2 BFC) and Tsarev (24-2 MMA, 1-0 BFC) meet on the MTV2-televised main card of the event, which takes place at Nutter Center in Fairfield, Ohio. Preliminary-card fights stream on Spike.com.

Good stumbled in his first try at a rematch with Askren, losing by split decision to Season 4 finalist Rick Hawn. Now back in his third Bellator tournament, he started on the right foot with a dominant decision over Brit Jim Wallhead in the opening round of this season’s competition.

Since the setback to Askren, he’s obsessed over the loss to the outspoken champion, watching the fight so many times that he memorized its commentary.

“More importantly, I’ve watched it enough to get what I needed to learn from it,” Good said. “I’ve learned and gained from my fight against Ben Askren. It was a blessing in disguise and a process that helped me to become a better fighter.”

Askren, meanwhile, has continued to dominate the Bellator field, twice defending his welterweight title against the likes of Jay Hieron and Douglas Lima. While acknowledging his skill set to be rudimentary, the champ said he felt no pressure to change his style despite diligent work to improve his standup skills.

For Good, sharpened grappling chops should come in handy against Tsarev, who was less than transparent about his desire to smother opponent Tim Welch in the opening round of the tournament. After multiple submission attempts, he got Welch’s back and secured a rear-naked choke.

Good can’t compete with Askren when it comes to mat accolades, but he isn’t worried that another smothering is in store against the Russian.

“Avoiding ground game is not my priority in this fight,” he said. “It just enhances my ability to win. My only goal is to win. But with given opportunity, this fight will end early. Michail probably plans on submitting me, and I’m planning on knocking him out.”

With a win on Friday, Good takes one step closer to a rematch with Askren, who is next scheduled to fight Season 6 tourney winner Karl Amoussou.

“It’s not about the revenge, it’s about regaining opportunity again,” Good said. “Askren is just the one who happens to be standing in the way.”
