Vaughn” Big Mac” McIntire has been training at TSMMA for about 6 months and has recently earned his blue belt which is the belt right after High White. What follows is an interview with ” Big Mac’s” mom, Danielle.

Did you have any preconceived notions about MMA or martial arts in general?

I had no idea at all what it was about, I came in with a good friend whose child was already training.

What has TSMMA done for “Big Mac”?

TSMMA has built Vaughn’s confidence. He doesn’t back away from new challenges anymore. He stays on task and completes his homework in an timely manner, sticks with and finishes his chores. I think he has finally found something that he is passionate about, which I think is the most important thing by far.

Did Vaughn have any problems that his training has helped with?

His training has definitely helped his concentration. Physically it has made him stronger and helped his balance and made him more agile.

What is your favorite part of Vaughn training?

I love the sparring during his kickboxing class and again the passion he shows for it.

What is “Big Mac’s” favorite part of class?

He loves the sparring and is looking forward to one day being able to put his grappling skills together with kickboxing skills and take the MMA class!

Why would you recommend TSMMA to other kids?

I like the way the instructors interact with the children and teach them much more then just punching and kicking. Every week they have a topic that they discuss at the end of class. The topic could range from self discipline to bully prevention. Yes, we would definitely recommend TSMMA!

1.) You have an extensive history in GG boxing, who are some of the female or male boxers you enjoy watching?

Female: Kat Diaz (great friend and inspiration), Jeri Sitzes, Yelena Binder, Cary Barry, Alicia Ashley, Melissa Hernandez, Ronica Jefferies.  All these ladies had something to do with my enthusiasm to want to box and they all had something in them that “fire,” that “heart,” that inspired me to persevere.
Male: Archie Moore (130 KO’s), Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Robinson (175 Wins, 106 KO’s), Roberto Duran (103-16 & 70 KO’s), Rocky Marciano (49-0), Jake LaMotta, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, Gene Tunney, “Iron” Mike Tyson, Michael Spinks, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez, Joe Louis, and George Foreman.  Frankly, I just love watching these guys do what they do, totally cool, and really incredible inspirations.

2.) You don’t have to name any names, who has had the biggest Diva moment backstage A female fighter or Male?

I am fortunate that I have not experienced any female fighters having Diva moments backstage, but I certainly have seen some of the guys have some Diva moments. When it comes to Fighting though, there are plenty of highly interesting “characters.”

3.) You Train out of the Amazing Tiger Schulmann, Which up and coming fighters should fans keep a eye on?

Rachel Kendall female 132-135 lb Amateur (Regional Muay Thai Champion) & 2-0 in MMA (She’s amazing and has worked so hard and battled so much personally to get to this place in her life), Jenna Serio (Ama – Muay Thai female fighter), Jimmy Rivera (Pro), Julio Arce (Pro), Brandon Cuttino (Ama), Stephen Regman (Ama), Mike Fischetti (Ama), Shane Burgos (Ama), Shane Baker (Ama), Craig Alexander (Ama)

4.) Favorite “cheat meal”

TSMMA Feasterville Student Letter : From Skeptic to Believer

I find myself being able to do far more both on and off the mat without exception.   I find myself looking forward to the work-out and more appropriately stated, NEEDING it.

Dear Sensei Campbell,

I wanted to take a few moments to pass on to you some reflections I’ve had.
You will recall it took a few months following my first meeting with you to bring our first child to you (and so exemplifies the truism ‘every relationship begins with distrust’).  Since then one by one my other two children followed suit, and the experience for them has been very positive.  I knew that TSMMA, and to the point, you, have been very good for my 3 children.

I was, however, initially taken by surprise when my wife was next on the mat as it seemed outside her wheelhouse.  I could easily wrap my head around the kids in succession, like mice led by the piper, but this seemed somehow different.  Knowing how much she enjoys exercise, my surprise waned and her time at TSMMA also earned my support.

I was, however, initially taken by surprise when my wife was next on the mat as it seemed outside her wheelhouse. Knowing how much she enjoys exercise, my surprise waned and her time at TSMMA also earned my support.

And you know I laughed. It was easier to simply laugh it off than to explain that I was really in one of those ‘I’m going to dig my heels in’ stubborn modes that my wife can detail for you far better than I can.  And there went up that distrust flag again, as well.

I find myself being able to do far more both on and off the mat without exception.   I find myself looking forward to the work-out and more appropriately stated, NEEDING it.

Better shape, stronger, better attitude.  So is it simply all coincidence? Today I’m a believer.  I get it!

Surprisingly I’ve had a few people at work come up to me this last week and tell me they enjoy working with me more as well.   Better shape, stronger, better attitude.  So is it simply all coincidence? Today I’m a believer.  I get it!

It once again reinforces my belief that one’s comfort zone is a very bad place to be.  It is slowly constricting and ultimately paralyzing, and I had been all too nicely settling in!

Thanks for the wake up!

Osu!

A Woman’s Perspective of Training MMA

I had never heard of Mixed Martial Arts, or the UFC, when I began training at Tiger Schulmann’s.

I didn’t know what kickboxing was, and I’d never heard of grappling.

I came because I met Sensei Villafane at a community event, and training looked like a lot of fun. I was nervous to come to my first class alone, because  I’d never joined a gym before, and I wasn’t very athletic. My biggest physical accomplishment was walking my dogs a couple miles a day.

I was nervous to come to my first class alone, because  I’d never joined a gym before, and I wasn’t very athletic.

Well, after one class, I was hooked. I loved hitting the bags. I loved kicking the shields. I didn’t care that I was clumsy, that my technique wasn’t perfect, or that a lot of the people on the mat were men. I couldn’t stop smiling, even through my sweat.

Well, after one class, I was hooked. I loved hitting the bags. I loved kicking the shields.

I never imagined that I would progress past the beginner class, where we only hit mitts and practiced kick techniques on x-ray paper. I couldn’t imagine grappling – and definitely not kickboxing. Now I’m training towards my black belt, and have won national grappling competitions. I compete, and win, in kickboxing competitions sponsored by Tiger Schulmann’s, as well.

I’ve learned that Tiger Schulmann’s is so much more than a gym – it’s a family, and a lifestyle.

In the last five years, the number of women at our school has really grown. We’re about 50/50 now, so even though I really enjoy training with the guys, there are plenty of ladies for me to train with too.  I’ve learned that Tiger Schulmann’s is so much more than a gym – it’s a family, and a lifestyle.  We have annual parties and picnics ; I’ve known many of the children in the classes from when they were in diapers.

Not only am I fit, and strong, I have a huge extended family – and all because I left my comfort zone and tried just one class.
