Elmwood Park Kickboxing With Hall of Famer

Kickboxing Best For Physical Conditioning

By: Sensei Thad Campbell

For many years people had a misconception about Martial Arts. They felt it was for young kids, not for adults. Part of the equation hasn’t changed. Martial Arts is still great for kids, but Sensei Dave Tirelli of Tiger Schulmann’s MMA in Elmwood Park is proving every day how Kickboxing can be a huge benefit to adults as well.

More and more it’s Adult’s turning to Kickboxing Class to get in shape and learn Self-Defense

Tiger Schulmann’s Kickboxing classes provide a three dimensional workout for students. First and most important to the thousands of adults who have Kickboxed with Tirelli is the amazing results they see. Students who come in to train with him lose weight and get in shape quickly and correctly, through great exercise and proper nutritional training.

Sensei Dave Tirelli (right) presents Black Belt to Elmwood Park student!

Second, Kickboxing class is fun. Tirelli’s motivating style and hands on instruction helps students keep their mind occupied for a full hour. Getting better motivates students while at the same time the focus needed in class provides a one hour mental holiday. Students leave the class knowing they worked hard, but feeling mentally refreshed.

Finally, Tirelli teaches real Self-Defense. The techniques are proven to work in a Real World situation. This is an extra motivation for students as their exercise regimen does more than just get them in the best shape!

Students Learning From Pioneer

Sensei Tirelli has been involved with Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts for almost thirty years. After graduation from Curry College, Tirelli returned to Northern New Jersey without a clear plan. Fortunately he found one right in his own family.

His younger brother Pete Tirelli had already been training with Tiger Schulmann for years and invited Dave to try class. He was hooked from the first day, very quickly taking the path to become a Head Instructor.

Tirelli’s Successful Competitive Kickboxing Career Helped Him Learn Most Important Techniques For His Students!

More than just an instructor, Tirelli was also a pioneering member of the Tiger Schulmann’s Fight Team. The team is recognized around the world today for members like former Bellator Welterweight World Champion Lyman Good and current UFC Flyweight Contender Louis Gaudinot.

In the 1990’s MMA was still in its infancy though. It was Sensei Tirelli who helped mold the curriculum of Tiger Schulmann’s by going out and testing himself in Mixed Martial Arts competitions. Cornered by Martial Art’s Hall of Famer Tiger Schulmann himself, Tirelli traveled around the country to find outlets to test his skill. In so doing he paved the way for hundreds of young Tiger Schulmann’s students who have gone on to compete successfully.

Through this journey Tirelli helped Tiger Schulmann’s whole organization figure out the very best techniques to teach students in case of a Real World Self-Defense situation. These techniques are the core of our current Kickboxing curriculum.

Sensei Tirelli was recently recognized for the important role he played in Mixed Martial Art’s development by being inducted into the New Jersey Mixed Martial Arts Hall of Fame!

Kickboxing Taught Right

What’s most impressive about Sensei Tirelli’s classes is they are not designed for people like himself who want to fight. In fact it is exactly the opposite. The curriculum and structure of class are designed to meet the needs of busy adults who have a career, many with families who also train in the Kids and Children’s Classes!

Tirelli makes sure his Kickboxing students get a great workout while also learning Self-Defense. This is done in disciplined way helping students feel safe. Ironically, by concentrating on proper technique and conditioning and not actual fighting, Sensei Tirelli has turned out some of the most successful competitors in the area as well.

Everyday Mom’s and Dad’s Learn Authentic Kickboxing From Hall of Famer!

The perfect combination he creates in class has led many of Tirelli’s students to train with him for years!

A Paramus Mom’s Testimonial on Improving the Lives of Her Son and Herself

By Current News No Comments

Testimonial by Liz Campbell, TSMMA Paramus

I first came to Tiger Schulmann’s in 2008 after a friend and colleague had taken me to a Woman-Safe Seminar at the martial arts school’s Paramus location. I joined soon after the seminar and I was immediately hooked. I had been a competitive athlete for most of my life, and after having children moved away from athletics and competition. I truly missed it, not as much for the competition, but for challenging myself.

I found myself out of shape and full of excuses. “I don’t have time”, “I’m in OK shape”, “I’ll workout starting on Monday”

Being a parent and Health and Physical Education teacher, you want to be a positive example and a role model. I found myself out of shape and full of excuses. “I don’t have time”, “I’m in OK shape”, “I’ll workout starting on Monday”. After taking that first beginner class at Paramus Mixed Martial Arts, I realized that this is where I need to be. I was exhausted, but energized. I had found what I didn’t even know what I was looking for.

As the months went on I had new found confidence and lost 20 lbs in my first 90 day challenge. I competed in my first tournament at the 2010 Challenge of Champions and won 2nd in both kickboxing and grappling. I’ve continued competing at C.O.C. and through the encouragement of my instructors, Joshu Murray and Joshu Neilson, have also competed at NAGA (North American Grappling Association); I’ve even earned medals and trophies (1st, 2nd, 3rd). But pushing and challenging myself to new levels is where its at for me. The trophies and medals are just the icing on the cake.

I had never really realized what a great stress reliever hitting the bag is until recently when I was “sidelined” with an injury. What I had thought was a bruised knee was found to actually be a torn meniscus. I’ve worked through injuries before—sprained ankle, sprained elbow, etc. Injuries are like those little orange cones that I put out on the field for my Physical Education classes. Sometimes they are boundary markers that you are not supposed to cross, other times they are obstacles that you are supposed to figure out how to go around. With persistence and the assistance of Joshu Murray and Joshu Neilson, we figured a way for me to still get a good workout in class, even with the injury. I was able to stay disciplined and consistent. I stayed true also to my promise of participating in the 90 day Challenge and have lost some weight and toned my body–with clean eating and coming to beginner kickboxing classes.

Through it all, my son Dillon has witnessed me persevere. Dillon has his challenges with ADHD and other behavioral issues.

Through it all, my son Dillon has witnessed me persevere. Dillon has his challenges with ADHD and other behavioral issues. Team sports and the typical recreational activities never worked well for him. They did not require the discipline—especially the self discipline. They came with the typical “participation” trophy rewards and no personal accountability. Dillon looks forward to the positive feedback he gets from Joshu Murray when he behaves or performs a skill correctly. He also benefits from the structure and immediate accountability. He values and respects Joshu Murray and in turn values and respects himself—giving him confidence to carry him through school and life’s challenges.

There will always be obstacles in life. Tiger Schulmann’s has shown me to make an effort — not an excuse!

Middletown Instructor Personifies Self-Disicpline

Passion For Martial Arts Since Start in Karate

By: Sensei Thad Campbell

John Evensen has been involved in Martial Arts for 20 years. His passion began in the early 1990’s when he walked into Tiger Schulmann’s Karate in East Brunswick, New Jersey. That passion hasn’t diminished since.

Early in his training Evensen realized this was his calling. He kept training in his normal classes but also received extra instruction from his Sensei to become a certified instructor. This title, Joshu, was extremely difficult to obtain. It was given directly by Tiger Schulmann to the select few students who demonstrated not only the technical ability to perform the curriculum, but also the discipline and motivational strength to teach others to do the same.

Sensei Evensen with his Middletown students after winning a competition!

Evensen shined in the program, earning the title of Joshu and eventually the title of Sensei or Senior Instructor, directly from Tiger Schulmann. This has led to a career teaching Martial Arts that has spanned more than 15 years.

Middletown Instructor Teaches Contemporary MMA With Discipline

Today he teaches Mixed Martial Arts to students young and old at his own school in Middletown, NJ.

While the style of Martial Arts has evolved in his time with Tiger Schulmann’s, the Self-Discipline he learned from his early days in Karate have stuck with him. It is the most important thing he tries to pass on to his young students.

Sensei Evensen’s Motivational Teaching Brings Whole Families to Class!

His own consistent training has allowed him to keep up with the rapid evolution of Martial Arts in the last two decades. He has passed this knowledge on to his students. Helping prepare them for a real world self-defense situation much more quickly than his own early Karate training.

Self-Discipline of Old School Karate Prepares Students for Success

Sensei Evensen hasn’t forgotten the most important thing he learned at Tiger Schulmann’s though. While learning Self-Defense is great for confidence, without Self-Discipline students will never learn much anyway.

The foundation of every class he teaches is Discipline. By providing a clear set of rules for his students they feel comfortable and achieve. Kids are encouraged positively to pay attention and persevere. If they are having trouble he helps them overcome the trouble instead of questioning their effort or getting frustrated. His patience as an instructor has been rewarded by the thousands of young students he has helped achieve their goals.

Kids Feel Comfortable Following Disciplined Class Format!

His record of success is amazing, having trained dozens of students to Black Belt. This rank is extremely difficult at Tiger Schulmann’s, with less than one percent of students who begin earning that rank. Even more impressive is the number of students Evensen has helped to become Joshu’s and even Sensei’s. His love of Martial Arts is as motivating to his students as his end of class stories.

Think your child could benefit from a teacher who builds focus, determination and Self-Disicpline? Call Tiger Schulmann’s in Middletown or register with the link on the top right of this page and try your first class with Sensei Evensen for free!

85 Pounds Lost, Body Transformed at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA

Murphys-PICTURE

I first started training at TSMMA back in January 2010. At the time, I weighed 216 pounds, lacked confidence and was very unhappy with my appearance. This caused me to frequently battle with feelings of anger and depression. Realizing I needed to do something for myself, I joined TSMMA Syosset because I always enjoyed watching UFC and wanted to try something different than just another gym.

I joined TSMMA Syosset because I always enjoyed watching UFC and wanted to try something different than just another gym.

What I found there while training under Sensei Nick Gravina was far more than just a workout; it was an experience that positively changed the entire way I lived my life. By that spring I had lost 30 pounds and began to really perfect my technique. More importantly, my feelings of anger and depression began to disappear just as fast as the inches off my waste and my confidence grew with each drop of sweat left on the mat.

By that spring I had lost 30 pounds and began to really perfect my technique.

Unfortunately, a combination of school and work forced me to stop training toward the end of 2010. From then until September 2012, I gradually regained the 30 pounds I had lost as well as an additional 25. Once again I found myself often feeling angry and depressed and lacking confidence. By my 29th Birthday in August 2012, I realized that I could no longer continue living in such an unhealthy way both physically and mentally. I would turn 30 a year later and knew my family had a history of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. I promised myself then that by the time I turned 30 I would be in the best shape of my life to avoid similar health problems and also rebuild my mental strength and discipline.

Unfortunately, a combination of school and work forced me to stop training toward the end of 2010. From then until September 2012, I gradually regained the 30 pounds

I knew exactly where to go. I joined TSMMA Seaford and never looked back. Training under Sensei Joe Belluomo for over a year now I have seen myself lose 85 pounds, transform my body into the greatest shape its ever been throughout my entire life, and find the focus, confidence and discipline I was sorely lacking. Initially my goal was a simple one; lose weight. As I lost weight, however, my goals changed. I didn’t just want to be skinny. I wanted to be as toned as possible. I didn’t want to just hit a bag, I wanted to have perfect technique and challenge myself in advanced grappling and sparring classes. I didn’t just want to ‘survive’ a class, I wanted to ‘attack’ a class with every ounce of energy I had and set an example for others. I now hope to continue advancing toward my Black Belt and maybe to even teach TSMMA classes.

I knew exactly where to go. I joined TSMMA Seaford and never looked back. Training under Sensei Joe Belluomo for over a year now I have seen myself lose 85 pounds, transform my body into the greatest shape its ever been throughout my entire life

Thanks to Sensei Belluomo and TSMMA I was able to keep the promise I made to myself on my 29th Birthday of being in the best shape of my life when I turned 30. Thanks to Sensei Belluomo and TSMMA I am also a better, stronger, more successful person than I’ve ever been before. I owe much to Sensei Belluomo and TSMMA, but the most important thing I’ve learned is to never give up on myself. It was that simple concept that allowed me to achieve what I have in the past year and one I share with every new student who walks into our school. The results I achieved are attainable for everyone so long as they just never give up on themselves. In fact, after seeing my results, my 51 year old mother even joined TSMMA Seaford and has now lost 40 pounds of her own. TSMMA Seaford has become our extended family and will always be an essential part of our lives moving forward.

Lawrenceville Martial Arts Classes Build Success

Lawrenceville Instructor Teaches Most Important Martial Arts Lesson

By: Sensei Thad Campbell

Joshu Tony Billings is living his passion. Every day he goes to Tiger Schulmann’s in Princeton and teaches Mixed Martial Arts to his more than 200 students. For Billings, still in his early 20’s, it is the culmination of a decade of his own training. He began as a student in Tiger Schulmann’s Chalfont and immediately discovered his love for Martial Arts.

Bililngs Provides Discipline for Lawrenceville Area Students

As a young student the disciplined environment, and the conversations about the importance of Self-Discipline given by his own Sensei, Michael Marchand, resonated with Billings.

From the time he was 16 years old he began helping Marchand every day. He assisted teaching classes from 4 o’clock in the afternoon right up until 10 at night. At the same time he continued his own training, sharpening skills that have seen him become an undefeated kickboxer and successful grappler on the competition scene.

Martial Arts Classes Taught Him the Path

For Billings his success has been the result of the Self-Discipline taught to him by Marchand. The idea of having a clear goal to focus on and then not giving up until it’s achieved has been a constant for Billings over the last decade.

It started with a simple desire to earn a Blue Belt (the first new color a student receives). That quickly turned into a quest to achieve Black Belt. Finally he set goal to become a certified instructor, a rigorous test overseen by Shihan (Japanese for Master) Tiger Schulmann.

Martial Arts Classes Made Bilings Successful In Competition

Having successfully completed all these tasks, Billings set off on the next logical step. He enrolled in college and applied the same Self-Discipline to achieve very high marks. Taking out humongous student loans was not daunting to Billings, who had the Confidence he would be able to pay them back through hard work. Nevertheless after three years he realized it didn’t make sense. His true passion was teaching Martial Arts Classes, why keep accruing debt for college classes if he didn’t have to.

This led to a new goal. That of becoming Head Instructor for his own group of students instead of working under Marchand.

Martial Arts Talent Needed For Lawrenceville/Princeton Area

This choice led Billings to begin training directly under Tiger Schulmann in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. Only 21 at the time, Billings talent was apparent immediately. He was training with professional Martial Artists like Welterweight World Champion Lyman Good, and UFC veteran Nick Pace. He wasn’t overwhelmed, nor overmatched.

A few months later, Tiger Schulmann was in need of an instructor for Martial Arts Classes in the Princeton/Lawrenceville area. He tabbed Billings for the job and for the past three years, Joshu Billings has been teaching his students the same method for success Tiger Schulmann’s MMA taught him.

Disciplined Martial Arts Classes First Step to Self-Disciplined Students

His passion for his students, incredible talent at Martial Arts, and ability to teach discipline both through the structure of his class and motivating talks has quickly turned him into a mentor for hundreds of students both young and old.

Looking for someone to teach your kids how to succeed, not only in Martial Arts, but in life? Sign up for a free trial class at TSMMA Princeton and see what all the hype is about!

Tiger Schulmann’s Paramus School Holds: “Knock-Out Kids’ Cancer” Event

On November 10, 2013, Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts Paramus will host “Knock Out Kids’ Cancers.” This two-part event teaches children and adults an introduction to martial arts training while simultaneously raising money for Benjamin’s Hope for the Future – a Pediatric Foundation in Love, Hope, Faith and Courage for Benjamin Venezia. The event consists of four back-to-back introductory classes open to the friends, family members and acquaintances of Tiger Schulmann’s students and of Ben Venezia, a 13-year old boy from Paramus who lost his life to Acute Myleoid Leukemia (AML) in the Spring of 2013.

To take an introductory martial arts class, the requested minimum donation is $20 per student. After the introductory class, attendees will schedule a Trial Program the following week which will include an orientation of the school, a trial class and free pair of training gloves. If they then wish to enroll as a regular student of Tiger Schulmann’s Paramus, $100 of their tuition will also go to Benjamin’s Hope for the Future.

ParamusMay2013-42

All children, ages 5 and up, as well as older teens and adults are welcome to attend. After their prospective classes on Sunday, November 10, attendees of the event are encouraged to follow their class with lunch or dinner right next door at Paramus’s Suburban Diner where the two establishments have arranged a “Dine-and-Donate” in which 10% of all food and drinks purchased will be donated to Benjamin’s Hope for the Future as well.

“The mission of Benjamin’s Hope for the Future is to provide support and financial assistance to children and their families affected by cancer. They seek to advocate for children fighting cancer and assist with one on one fundraising for financial assistance to families in need. They also look to provide funding for cutting edge pediatric cancer research with a primary focus on AML research, which is overwhelmingly underfunded. Finally, they aim to recognize and offer scholarships to outstanding youth in the community excelling in academics and actively involved community service,” states Jackie Neilson, Manager of Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts in Paramus. “Over 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. One out of five will lose their life, and three out of five will develop long term side effects. What’s worse is that pediatric cancer receives about 4% funding and no new pediatric drugs have been developed over the last 20 years. More funding and attention needs to be paid to this cause.”

To learn more about Ben’s story and AML, visit www.benjaminshopeforthefuture.org.

For the first time in 2013, TSMMA Paramus will host “Knock Out Kids’ Cancer”, a series of classes taught by instructors Michael Murray and Jackie Neilson for kids and adults age 5 and up. The seminar teaches an introduction to self-defense, which also incorporates self-discipline training and exercise in a fun and safe atmosphere. Refreshments will be served throughout the classes. ALL Paramus students and parents should attend and spread the word far and wide. The event will be open to the public, but we request that attendees call to reserve a spot. Register with Jackie Neilson at 201-977-2066 or Paramus@tsk.com.

Kickboxing Paves Way to Sensei’s Health

By: Sensei Thad Campbell

When Sensei Rich Jean first began training at Tiger Schulmann’s more than a decade ago he had a very simple goal. He set out to control his diabetes. The diagnosis left Jean in shock. Not even 30 years old, he was all of a sudden faced with his own mortality. It’s a vision many people don’t see until too late.

Fortunately for Jean, his diagnosis came early enough to take action. He walked into Tiger Schulmann’s in Seaford, Long Island and began training under his Sensei, Joe Belluomo. That simple decision changed his life.

At the time Jean was a successful engineer. What he wasn’t was in shape. Kickboxing classes changed that quickly. Jean was motivated by Sensei Belluomo to train hard and at the same time followed the nutrition plan provided by the Tiger Schulmann’s instructor.

Hungtington Instructor’s Physique Carved From Kickboxing Classes

Combined with regular monitoring of his insulin levels, it has allowed Jean to continue his active lifestyle.

Jean Makes Decision To Teach Kickboxing

It wasn’t an easy decision for Jean to leave his engineering job. He had a solid income and job security. What he didn’t have was the sense of excitement he got every time he entered Tiger Schulmann’s. A couple years into his training he began actively pursuing a full time career as a Kickboxing instructor.

It was a decision he hasn’t looked back on since. For a few years Jean received valuable experience helping Belluomo at Tiger Schulmann’s in Seaford. He began training at Tiger Schulmann’s headquarters in Elmwood Park, NJ as well. This gave Shihan (Japanese for Master) Tiger Schulmann the chance to see Jean first hand.

When the opportunity arose for an instructor in Huntington, Tiger Schulmann felt Sensei Jean would be the perfect fit. His combination of Martial Arts skill and personal success through his training would be the perfect fit for his students.

Kickboxing Classes For Everyone

Now Jean has been teaching classes daily for more than five years. His Kickboxing classes draw students from every walk of life and with every goal you can imagine. He has helped many students achieve weight loss with a select few even helping to control their diabetes like he has.

Sensei Jean Leads A Group of Mom’s Through Their First Kickboxing Class!

Most of Sensei Jean’s students are professionals, Doctors and Lawyers, moms and dads who are looking for a fun workout. A few have more competitive goals and Sensei Jean has also been able to help them compete successfully.

His ability to motivate people from every different background and make sure they all take something out of class keeps his students coming back for more. At the same time his own journey has earned the respect of everyone who trains with him.
