Adult Kickboxing At Any Age

By TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

DIANE LYNCH never expected to pursue adult kickboxing classes. Now at the age of 64, she has only been training with Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (TSMMA) of Vails Gate for a year. Diane celebrated her first anniversary with TSMMA on Mother’s Day. She originally signed on by invitation from her daughter. “I enjoyed her excitement with adult kickboxing classes but never imagined myself in this coterie. Neither did the young men in class. They were courteous, but their smiles gave away their thoughts. ‘We’ll see how long this one lasts!’ Sensei was so very gracious. At a time when I doubted my own capabilities and effectiveness, his gift of motivation and acceptance strengthened my heart.”

“After the first adult kickboxing class with Sensei, I was struck dumb with how much I couldn’t do. I remember questioning, ‘What part of me is strong?’ Sensei answered, ‘You have heart.'”

In the past, Diane had tried different venues such as Curves, and took two different Zumba classes. “It took me six months to find the hinge in my hips. I explained to the instructors that being born in 1950’s, I bridged two different worlds…what was and what wastobe. In the 1960’s women were still being “finished” with classes by Barbizon, to polish their gait in spiked heels. We would learn how to glide on our toes, sit or stand with great control, not plop and NEVER EVER JIGGLE ANYTHING.  My mother would have been horrified if she saw me in those Zumba classes. They were great.” Although Diane enjoyed the vibrant, social atmosphere of the dance classes, she expanded her curiosity and delved into other avenues. “When I first came to Tiger Schulmann’s, I thought of myself as healthy and active. So after the first adult kickboxing class with Sensei, I was struck dumb with how much I couldn’t do. I remember questioning, ‘What part of me is strong?’ Sensei answered, ‘You have heart.'”

Sensei’s answer resonates to this day, as Diane has reflected on many courageous things she has attempted. Things that seemed unconventional, though now they are accepted and even expected in today’s society. Diane went back to school when her kids were older to extend her teaching certification in science. She ran for the Board of Education and won, secured a fellowship to study in China, and most recently, after teaching Literature and Language Arts for 23 years, Diane refashioned her career to teach 7th, 8th & 9th grade Math.  Diane states “Not bad for a late bloomer…the first time I left home for a week long seminar I was 43. So I knew could do adult kickboxing classes!”

“’Kickboxing isn’t ladylike’……But it is a road to a healthier future”

Diane recalls an instance during kickboxing class when Sensei instructed her to widen her stance. “I told him it wasn’t ladylike. Without skipping a beat, he retorted, ‘kickboxing isn’t ladylike.’ I Guess not. But it is a road to a healthier future.”  Diane continues to improve her strength and endurance during each kickboxing class and embraces Sensei’s coaching in perspective and life skills as a counterbalance to decades of programming and approach to living. “I look forward to every kickboxing class and leave better than I came.”

Diane has become a familiar face at TSMMA Vails Gate and enjoys the camaraderie and family oriented atmosphere of the school. She has truly become an inspiration to a number of her peers and exemplifies what it means to seize each day and use your potential to its fullest. “Truly there are glass ceilings in every one’s life. Many times it is a barrier of our own making, a mirror instead of glass. We can look up and sigh with resignation or we can actively work to change limitation to potential and potential into capacity.  Who knows, the punch we throw may be all it takes.”

The Key to Bullying Prevention is Confidence

By TSMMA Wayne No Comments

A study conducted by news giant CNN cited the 95% of high school students are somehow involved in bullying.  Most being bullied and some actually bullying others; 80% being bullied and 15% bullies.  Bullying Prevention is our goal.

Bullying Prevetion is as simple as building confidence through kids martial arts

Many children deal with bullying everyday. Help your child break the cycle.

Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts has been helping students become part of the other 5% for more than 30 years. What can stop a child from playing the game of bully or get bullied? Tiger Schulmann’s has proven during their 30 year history to hold the answer.

Bullying prevention comes from building confidence.

Your child will become more confident through training at Tiger Schulmann’s

Sensei S. Zapfel teaches Wayne students the essential techniques to stop bullying.

Being bullied or bullying others stems from the same issue, lack of self-confidence. Bullies try and gain that ever elusive popular status to improve their own confidence by putting down others. Meanwhile, victims allow such behavior because of their own fear of confronting a bully.

Bullying Prevention For Wayne NJ and Pequannock NJ

Bullying Prevention lies completely in the hands o each individual

Put an end to bullying for your child with Tiger Schulmann’s MMA Training

“What we do in our classes is teach the most effective techniques to stand up to bullies physically,” says Tiger Schulmann’s Wayne Owner and Head Instructor Scott Zapfel. “By knowing the physical techniques to confront a bully, our students also gain the confidence to stand up for themselves verbally.”

Students build confidence through achievement in Tiger Schulmann’s MMA program.

Zapfel teaches his Wayne area students the various levels of bullying, how to identify it as early as possible, and how to best handle each situation properly.

“Our program teaches kids to be empowered, not to rely on anyone but themselves to stop bullying.”

School programs, such as the “No-tolerance” Policy,  that discourage students from standing up for themselves often cause increased bullying.  The victim can’t stand up for himself at the right time to do so  to end the issue, and if they tells on the other kids, he or she is now a “tattletale”.  Both of these situations do not help in this dynamic..

“Teachers and administrators have sought out answers to this problem for years without success. No tolerance policies and outside anti-bullying programs have actually made the issue worse according to some research: http://www.uta.edu/news/releases/2013/09/jeong-bullying.php

TS MMA students learn self-defense techniques for virtually any situation, standing up or on the ground!

Bullying Prevention should not only be taught as a stand up skill but also on the ground

Kids not only learn self defense while standing, but what happens when the encounter goes to the ground?

Students don’t need help from fellow students or teachers after learning the techniques of Mixed Martial Arts taught by Zapfel. Tiger Schulmann’s curriculum has been perfected over 30 years, helping more than 100,000 young students stand up to bullying.

Karate For Modern Era On Display At MMA School

By TSMMA Abington No Comments

For years parents turned to karate to help build confidence in their children. Building Self-Confidence takes two things, achievement and a sense of security. Achievement helps build confidence. Self-defense provides that sense of security.

Karate was once considered the best way to defend yourself. In the last two decades that has been proven incorrect.

“The fact is modern day bullying incidents look nothing like what Karate teaches,” says Sensei James Garzillo of Tiger Schulmann’s in Abington. “Through our thirty year history, we’ve learned that students need a more well rounded self-defense system.”

Young students learn modern self-defense techniques.

Young students learn modern techniques far more effective than karate to confront bullying.

Tiger Schulmann’s teaches Beginner students 41 techniques proven to work in a modern day bullying situation. The techniques are not specific to karate, but draw from various martial arts.

“Those techniques were chosen because they are safe to practice, easy to learn, and do not require strength to be effective,” he says. “And they provide self-defense in every situation.”

Sensei Garzillo takes the time to teach his students how to identify and handle different bullying situations.

Garzillo was an expert in Karate getting all the way to 2nd Degree Black Belt. That did not stop him from making the transition to a more effective self-defense style.

MMA Stops Bullying Better Than Karate

“I simply could not keep telling parents I was providing the best self-defense training if I knew I was only teaching the techniques of Karate. As a martial artist it is our duty to seek out the very best for ourselves and our students. The bottom line is if you are still teaching Karate you cannot claim it is truly relevant for self-defense.”

Traditional Karate belt system still helps MMA students see build confidence through achievement.

It’s the same reason kids looking to go to college look at Harvard. The results speak for themselves. Simply look at the successful graduates (or Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg who didn’t even graduate) and you know you are going to be in the right place.

Benefits Of Karate Taught With an MMA twist

By TSMMA Red Bank No Comments

It is a scene that has been playing itself out since John Evensen joined Tiger Schulmann’s Karate more than twenty years ago. A young parent brings their child to karate because they don’t know what to do. Sensei John Evensen hears about a lack of concentration and attention span and how it hurts the child in school and causes tension at home.

An hour later after watching his class two bewildered parents come wonder how he has been able to get their child to pay attention for the full length of class.

Evensen creates a very disciplined atmosphere

Evensen creates a very disciplined atmosphere parents remember from traditional karate when they were kids!

“What our curriculum does is really motivate young kids to want to pay attention,” says the Tiger Schulmann’s MMA Red Bank owner. “We have this carrot of learning MMA that helps keep them engaged, but then we also spend a lot of time teaching kids why focus, both concentration and attention span, will help them.”

Evensen says it is no accident that his curriculum is so successful. He spends hours every week training with the nearly 100 world class instructors at TSMMA headquarters. Under the direction of Tiger Schulmann they practice both physical and teaching techniques constantly in an effort to improve their program.

Evensen (2nd row far left) continues to improve his own martial arts and teaching skill through his own training.

Evensen (2nd row far left) continues to improve his own martial arts and teaching skill through his own training.

“We have changed so much over the two decades I’ve been teaching both. We completely overhauled our traditional karate system to teach a much more effective style, MMA. And we continue to implement new and improved teaching techniques. The improvement in both those areas has really helped Tiger Schulmann’s remain at the forefront of martial arts training.”

Evensen says the last vestiges of the Karate training he first started out with are nearly gone. It has been replaced by the much more practical self-defense style of MMA. Red Bank parents don’t see the cages and aggression that used to be associated with the fledgling sport, instead they see a professional, disciplined class that teaches kids the most important techniques to stop bullying and build self-discipline.

Students gain true confidence knowing they are learning effective self-defense.

Students gain true confidence knowing they are learning self-defense more effective than karate.

“Traditional Karate was always about character development and self-defense. Well part of what we have done is have the character to realize there was a better way to teach self-defense. That doesn’t mean the other aspect of our program, personal values, focus, perseverance, those things are still an integral part of what we are teaching.”

Self-Confidence Built At local MMA School

By TSMMA Yonkers No Comments

Pete Tirelli was one of Tiger Schulmann’s original students. Thirty years later he is celebrating three decades of Martial Arts training by doing what he has always done, teaching his students the secrets to true self-confidence.

Program 30 Years Strong Proven To Build Self-Confidence

“You cannot ask your child to BE Self-Confident, or ACT Self-Confident,” says the TSMMA Yonkers Owner and Head Instructor. “It’s something that has to come from within.”

Tirelli has run a successful martial arts school for nearly thirty years. He knows how to help his students gain that self-confidence the right way.

Students learn effective self-defense in a disciplined environment. That helps build self-confidence through achievement and a sense of security.

Students learn effective self-defense in a disciplined environment. That helps build self-confidence through achievement and a sense of security.

“By combining achievement with a sense of security we help our students gain that all important trait for success,” he says.

Tirelli says Self-Confidence is doubly important for young kids. With it they can achieve in school, sports, the arts, or anything else they set their mind to. Without it they will frequently be the target of bullies.

“Bullies are really just kids without self-confidence. Instead of building it through achievement, they try and steal it from other kids. So they will target a kid with less self-confidence and try and make them look worse to other kids.”

Tirelli says teaching students the self-discipline to achieve and the self-defense to defend themselves makes students successful in school and other activities. By walking with more self-confidence in school, his students are not targeted by bullies. They typically avoid altercations. And his students do not become bullies either. The main reason kids turn to bullying is a lack of self-confidence. Tirelli’s students get their self-confidence the right way, they earn it!

Karate Classes For New Generation

By TSMMA Williamsburg No Comments

Sensei Nissim Levy grew up with Tiger Schulmann. A close relative of the martial arts icon, Levy began attending karate classes at an early age. A year spent living with his cousin as a teenager showed the young Levy the passion and dedication it took for Schulmann to build the worlds largest and most successful martial arts organization.

Now Levy is dedicating his adult life to bringing Tiger Schulmann’s to an even greater audience. Levy is the owner and head instructor of TSMMA Bay Ridge and one of his very first students, Tyrone Mason is now expanding the system into Williamsburg.

Discipline is a hallmark of Tiger Schulmann's karate classes.

Discipline is a hallmark of Tiger Schulmann’s karate classes.

“When Tiger Schulmann first opened in 1984 he revolutionized Karate classes,” says Levy. “By creating a very meticulous curriculum that helped kids understand and apply discipline while teaching realistic self-defense he provided parents with exactly what they were looking for.”

Now Levy and his student Mason are bringing that teaching to yet another Brooklyn neighborhood. While there are still dozens of choices for Karate classes in Williamsburg, none can boast the history of success guaranteed at Tiger Schulmann’s.

Karate Classes Improved With Brooklyn MMA School

Not only is their system for teaching discipline to young members unmatched, but they have also created the most effective self-defense system on earth.

“I know what young kids go through,” says Mason, TSMMA Williamsburg’s owner and instructor. “I am a small guy and I was an even smaller kid. Even as an adult I value the knowledge I have gained to be able to defend myself. For our young students I know that can be the difference in their success in school.”

Mason says the confidence to confront bullying helps keep his young students focus in the right place, school. At the same time he says the knowledge and understanding of discipline gives his students the perseverance and motivation to excel.

“I was recommended to Tiger Schulmann’s myself by one of my teachers who knew I had more potential than what I was showing. I learned discipline from Sensei Levy at Tiger Schulmann’s and love being able to pass those lessons along to my students because I know exactly how much it will help them in their lives.”

Karate Passion Goes Back To Age Five

By TSMMA Syosset No Comments

Nick Gravina was five years old when he began training in Kyokushin Karate. As a youngster embracing Karate’s most assertive style he was fortunate to look up to a prodigy in the art. Tiger Schulmann was a few years older than Gravina and was busy cementing his legacy as the most talented Karate fighter the United States has ever seen.

Little did Gravina know that he would spend his entire adult life working closely with Schulmann to create the largest and most successful Karate system in the world.

Syosset students have substituted the traditional kata of karate with modern MMA techniques.

Syosset students have substituted the traditional kata of karate with modern MMA techniques.

Things look a little different at Gravina’s Syosset school these days. Gone are the mirrors and ballet bar that graced his first school. You won’t see bo staffs and nunchukus in a weapons rack either. Syosset students learn a significantly more effective system of self-defense these days.

Youthful Karate Passion Turns Into MMA Teaching Career

Mixed Martial Arts simply means pulling the very best techniques from the thousands throughout the martial arts world. From the hundreds of techniques in the whole Tiger Schulmann’s system, new students concentrate on only 41.

Those were chosen because they are proven to be the most effective in a bullying situation, they are both safe and easy to learn and they don’t require strength.

There is one thing that is exactly the same though, the passion with which Gravina approaches each and every class at his school. You might think that after nearly 30 years of teaching 36 classes a week his enthusiasm might wane. You would be mistaken.

Gravina still brings the same smile he did when he was a karate white belt!

Gravina still brings the same smile he did when he was a karate white belt!

Gravina still approaches each and every class with the focus and positive energy he teaches his students to take into every activity they pursue. In fact it his example of discipline that has been helping Syosset students learn what that word means.

Gravina provides a disciplined environment, defines the word and then helps each and every young student apply it to their martial arts training. This has been the foundation of Tiger Schulmann’s since Gravina’s mentor first opened a Karate school 30 years ago.
