Mother of 2 Loses 27lbs in 4 months Kickboxing

By Current News, featured news, TSMMA Bay Ridge No Comments
before and after weight loss

Romona lost 27 pounds kickboxing at Tiger Schulmann’s in only 4 months training 3 to 5 classes a week.

My name is Romona H. Singh, 38 years old and mother of 2 TSMMA Students from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  For two years, Jenna Serio and Sensei Levy tried to get me to try a kickboxing class, which I made all sorts of excuses.  Maybe I was embarrassed since I was going to the gym repeatedly as of 2007 and my weight kept going up and up.  Joshu Regman came to Bay Ridge, and started asking me every time he saw me “when are you taking class?” One day he grabbed my wrist, and said “how will you get defend this in a street situation?”

For the Mother’s Night, Joshu Regman and/or Jaime Benson Garita (dual effort) signed my name up on the list.  I said let me take this stupid kickboxing class and get these people out of my hair.  I did the class and I fell in love with the authentic kickboxing training, aggression and adrenaline rush instantly.  Since June to October 2014, I’ve lost a total of 27 lbs (bring my weight down from 152 to 125 lbs) just training consistently about 3-5 classes per week.  Without the training, encouragement and guidance of Sensei Levy, Sensei Good, Joshu Regman, Elaine Lam, Colin Tennyson, Jaime Benson-Garita, Lyndell Doulin, and Rashaad Mason (my first partner who kept pushing me for weeks on the mat as if I was training for a cage fight) I would probably still be at the gym with knees and ankles pain and stuck at 150 plus pounds.  OSU!!!

Although that down in the dumps feeling can hit you any time of the year, it is especially prevalent in the Winter months following the Holidays. The combination of post holiday let down, sundown at 5pm, and the inability to enjoy the outdoors do to freezing temperature have been known to bring even the most positive person down a bit. Regular exercise has been proven to increase your energy level and boost self esteem, as well as ward off feelings of anxiety and depression. It also reduces stress and improves your sleep. Exercise also releases endorphins in your body , which have been known to put you in a positive mood.  In other words, exercise makes you feel great.

A healthy diet is just as important as exercise to lift your spirits in these cold, dark months. Not only does a healthy diet lift your energy levels, which puts you in a better mood, but the self confidence of having a body you can be proud of will will boost your self esteem and keep your outlook positive.

Rockaway NJ Karate Student Has Second Chance To Reach A Life Goal

My Journey to Black Belt

Rich Receiving Belt

Rich Receiving Belt

by Richard Johnson

It was roughly fourteen years ago when my journey began.  It started quite unexpectedly since I had not set out to obtain a black belt in martial arts but to relieve stress and anxiety which had crept up upon me unexpectedly.  Being quite athletic in my younger years, I had always been quite active in some sort of sport throughout the year which had apparently allowed me to circumvent the stresses of life.  It wasn’t until after I graduated college, was working full time and had attempted to return to college to obtain a Master’s degree that I realized that I was no longer impervious to stress.  At that time in my life, money was very tight, of course, as a result of renting an apartment, driving an ‘85 Toyota Supra and commuting roughly 35 miles to work one way, each day.  Although I continued to press on with my ambition in college, I did not realize that the more I pushed forward, the less I was mentally able to handle the stresses that were slowly building.

“The stress and anxiety in my life had finally reached a plateau”

I believe that I was extremely lucky one evening when I was driving to college for class.   Like most people in New Jersey, I like to drive fast (my wife would vouch as she yells at me all the time about it).  I had received a notice from the school that my classes were to be cancelled due to my lack of payment for the semester.  I thought that I would get there earlier to straighten the financial issues out with the Bursar office, but instead I drove home.  While driving very fast on the highway, I blacked out.  The stress and anxiety in my life had finally reached a plateau.  However, I must have been guided that evening because I didn’t remember the two exits I passed or the busy traffic I awoke in, but I was still within the lane I was originally driving in.  I realized at that point that I needed to do something and it had to happen fast.  I couldn’t drive fast enough to get home while my heartbeat hastened to a point I thought I was going to have a heart attack.  I couldn’t watch the TV that evening without dripping in sweat with elevated body temperatures.  From that point, life had changed and quickly.

Being an avid Howard Stern listener at the time, I would constantly listen to Howard discuss Tiger Schulmann’s Karate and Fitness Center on the radio.  After listening to the commercial every day, I decided to call the number provided.  I was directed to the school in Hackensack, where I attended under Sensei Tirelli’s direction, since this school was the closest to Belleville where I had been living at the time.  Although I was still strapped for cash, I sprung for the instructions the good ‘ol American way by using my credit cards.  Of course, the expenditure didn’t make my financial stresses go away, it had augmented them, however at least I now had a means of working those stresses from my body and mind, so I wound up feeling better although I shouldn’t have.  I had always wanted to take karate lessons as a kid after watching Kung Fu Theater every Saturday, but other sports had always taken precedence.  I never realized the total body workout that could be achieved until the first week I attended classes.  It was a good school with good people who always pushed your abilities and/or limitations to gain better results.  Besides, the feelings of relief after class were such a welcome release from the stresses and anxiety of the day that I was hooked immediately.

I attended classes in Hackensack until I reached my yellow belt and was testing for my green belt.  However, life has ways of turning things upside down and sideways as it had done for me roughly two years later.  We are always told in class not to kick with our toes when executing the round kick, well I did anyway.  The result was a broken big toe on my left foot.  As I recall, I was Joshu Bop’s first injury.  I laugh about it now, but didn’t find it funny at the time.  With the broken toe, increased responsibilities at work, the end of my lease in Belleville, and a move eminent, I attended classes more infrequently.  I ultimately stopped when I realized that I could no longer gain the benefits of karate while making sacrifices with my new family, my wife, and daughter (she now attends class also).  We were renting a house in Morris County at the time and found that travelling, and late nights which had resulted, were becoming more burdensome to my family.  I also needed to have second job to assist with our new financial woes.  No longer attending classes became an obvious choice.  In lieu of TSK, I turned to a local karate school which had exhibited a similar style to compensate for the lack of exercise I so desperately needed mentally.

The local school was a short distance from the house we rented.  It was convenient, yes, but not really worth it, although I didn’t pay much for classes.  I say that only because I did not receive the full body workout I yearned for, although I did receive a well structured, traditional karate lesson.  I left class more intelligent, but still stressed.  After about a year, I stopped going.  It had lost its luster.  Of course, the choice to stop attending class resulted in weight gain caused by the lack of physical exercise and more time to eat.

“I waited patiently for the TSK”

Several years had passed, about fifty pounds were gained, we bought a house, we had a son (he also attends classes), and I found myself at the doctor’s office one day.  The doctor’s tone during our conversation was one of concern.  He insisted that I lose some weight because of the blood test administered days before did not come back with the anticipated results.  Instead, several items tested were high and/or above the desired limits recommended.  I had only taken the blood tests as a result of mistaken identity.  The doctor’s office had pulled another’s chart with the same name.  Again, life was playing with me, however, this time for the best.  Ironically, around this time, I had received some news that a TSK was opening not far from our house in Rockaway.  I convinced my doctor, after my second visit and the same results, to allow me an extended period to attempt to lose weight and correct the issues he saw without having to take daily medication.  He finally agreed as he advised me of the upcoming outcome if I hadn’t improved, and I waited patiently for the TSK to open.

I finally started to attend classes once again.  I made an impression with my yellow belt and black stripes on my white pants on my first day, since the school was full of white belts.  Apparently the Black Belt Club was a thing of the past as were the stars on my shoulder, although I stood out because of them.  I maintained my yellow belt status until Sensei Phillips felt I had regained and exceeded the requirements to obtain my green belt.  It had been roughly ten years since I had been promoted last and was exuberant on the day it had happened.  The follow up visit at the doctor’s office yielded better results so I was able to stay medication free, which was an added plus.

I have and continue to train hard and to learn from my instructor, Joshu Castro.  Now, fourteen years later, I am finally at the end of my journey.  However, I have always considered my ever winding road to black belt as the first chapter of my life in karate.  As this chapter ends, another begins as it is my intention to continue with karate as a Joshu.  I’m not sure that being a Sensei is currently in my path, but as one can see, life has a way of changing, and quickly.

Why Kickboxing Is The Best Fitness Program

Why Kickboxing Is The Best Fitness Program

With the new year here, most adults are ready to get into the best shape of their lives.  Which is a great goal, but most of the people that aim for this goal never reach it.  Lack of self discipline plays a huge part in the demise of hitting your fitness goals.

There are many reasons why people can’t reach those fitness goals they are so wanting to reach.  Most people join the GYM and in only a month later stop going.  At the gym you won’t find motivation through your training, unless you get a personal trainer, but honestly that can be very expensive.  I have a student of mine that is a personal trainer and for 40 sessions which is 40 hours it cost the member at the gym 6,000 dollars.  6,ooo dollars for 40 hours?!?!?!?!  That is insane!  Most personal trainers are certified through a website or just take a weekend course.  To me that’s a slap in the face.  I have been training in Tiger Schulmann’s for almost 23 years, and I still train at least three days a week under the instruction of Master Tiger Schulmann himself.  If I don’t train then I lose my certification and cannot teach, now I love to train but at least you know when you come to a Tiger Schulmann’s school your instructor is doing the same thing he is teaching you.  And by the way, my program for so many more hours is no where near 6,000 dollars.

With Kickboxing, Jen lost a total of 130 pounds

What I love about my program is that you never have to come up with any routine.  Each of the instructors in Tiger Schulmann’s have a set curriculum written and created by our Founder Master Tiger Schumann.   At the gym you gotta create your own routine, but if you are undisciplined and have no idea on how to workout, then how can you create a workout plan and stick to it? As you see in the picture above, Jen lost 130 pounds training here at Tiger Schulmann’s.

Besides getting into amazing shape you’ll walk out of every Tiger Schulmann’s class with a feeling of empowerment.  We teach an authentic streetwise self defense.  As a matter a fact one of my female students defended herself agaisnt a man with a gun last month.  She is a paramedic and a man was on the influence of drugs.  He reached for his gun and she held him on the ground till the police came.  She held him in a position that I teach in my close range self defense class, you can read the story by clicking on Julie’s story.  Julie’s story

That’s what my program is all about, I always like to say “it’s a fitness program with a kick!”.  My main focus is teaching authentic self defense and the ancillary benefit is getting into amazing shape!

Personal Training: The Risky Investment

By TSMMA Elmwood Park No Comments

TSMMA Elmwood Park Blog 5

In terms of fitness and exercise, people generally seek personal trainers in order to both educate and motivate them about working out. The average person might know how to do a proper pushup, but that average person probably does not know how to eat properly.  When most people think of starting a diet the first thing that comes to mind is eating less. How much less should I eat a day to look and feel better? Though this is not completely false, the theory behind eating less is often misinterpreted to the extreme. When somebody goes from eating unhealthy to not eating at all, he/she has not made an improvement as far as healthy eating. In some instances, eating almost nothing could be more detrimental to your overall health than excess eating! With lack of food come lack of vitamins and necessary polymers which are needed to keep the body running efficiently. If the lack of eating continues it can lead to deficiencies of a certain vitamin such as iron. Going back to the original topic of personal trainers, it is important for a personal trainer to be able to not only regurgitate the basic lessons of fitness which he/she had been tested on for his/her certification, but also to know nutrition in depth.

It’s no surprise that if you plan on going to a decent gym with a decent facility the personal trainers available are quite pricey. That does not go to say that the personal training is not worth it, but looking from a financial standpoint, it can be very risky. To become a personal trainer nowadays with new workout crazes and forms of fitness emerging does not take too much effort. In some instances one can apply online and receive a personal training certificate from limited testing. A personal trainer can be a young inexperienced man or woman in their twenties who have the absolute minimal knowledge on nutrition and fitness. If you paid $75 an hour and you found out your personal trainer was not getting you any closer to losing those hypothetical twenty pounds nor helping you design a healthy manageable diet wouldn’t it anger you? If only there was a way to know your trainer was qualified and knowledgeable in the ins and outs of nutrition and fitness. Well there are a couple solutions. One solution is to pay top dollar for a know-it -all bodybuilder like trainer with countless years of experience. Most likely your wallet will be getting the biggest workout in this scenario.  The second alternative is to join a martial arts gym. Not just any martial arts gym, but a martial arts school, where every student has their individual goals catered to. There are many places like this, but no better than Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts.tirelli class

If somebody was to walk into Tiger Schulmann’s MMA in Elmwood Park their first reaction would be to look awe as they saw a state of the art facility which is also very clean. Next they would meet an instructor who dedicated his life to not only teaching martial arts but also to coaching people on their lives. When you pay the extra few bucks for a personal trainer, you are making an investment on the trainer, and you have to make sure that investment is trustworthy. Young personal trainers at Retro Fitness or NYSC are looking for a quick pay day and an easy way to teach what they think is proper fitness. A Tiger Schulmann’s instructor has not only done years of practice in martial arts, but has also done years of research on people. Dealing with different people with different goals is where a true life coach is formed. At Tiger Schulmann’s MMA, the instructor is the best investment one can make, mainly because he will be coaching you and not just training you.

Kickboxing gets RESULTS!

Each year people make new years resolutions. The overwhelming majority of people last about three weeks before giving up on themselves. The number one resolution is to get in better shape and live a healthier life. At this time of year  gyms all across America fill with new members. People want to lose weight, get in shape and look and feel better about themselves.  By the middle of February the gyms are virtually empty except for the die hard regulars. Gyms depend on this  every year. Imagine what would happen if every member continued to show up once they joined, on a three day a week basis, there would be lines around the building to use every machine. What you need is a workout that can get the results in a shorter period of time with a trainer that will keep you motivated and train you to reach any goal you set.

New Year, New YOU: Kickboxing Your Way To A Healthier Lifestyle

By TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

At the stroke of midnight on January 1st, millions of people are suddenly accountable for the neverending list of resolutions they promised themselves during the holidays a week earlier. Most of them are weight loss ambitions, most likely made while consuming large amounts of cookies and eggnog during the holiday work party. “I’ll start after the holidays are over.” Sound familiar? Most weight loss programs and fitness facilities relish in this time of year, as it’s peak season for them and a wonderful opportunity to prey on guilt-ridden, vulnerable individuals who have overindulged the sugary fare. Suddenly, January 1st is upon us, and the mounting pressure to take responsibility for losing weight and eating right becomes even more stressful before you even start!

I admit, I was skeptical at first. I figured I would get a good workout, meet some new friends and move on just the same.

Year after year, I have tried countless fitness programs and done my best to stay motivated to workout. From CKO kickboxing to Insanity to even ballroom dancing, I have tried it all. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed each experience when I was actively involved for a few short months. But each of them only offered a single component of what it takes to achieve fitness goals, and the rest was up to me. I lasted about two months doing Insanity. The workout was awesome and the nutrition guide was helpful, but trying to self motivate to do the same DVD workout every cycle became redundant. Even ballroom dancing became a bore without a change in partners after a while. Then I found Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (TSMMA).

kickboxing-adults

I admit, I was skeptical at first. I figured I would get a good workout, meet some new friends and move on just the same. It has been two years, and not only am I consistently training at least 4 days a week, but I am in the best shape of my life! I never felt that I was “fat” because I was always active for the most part. I participated in a variety of sports and I was always considered to be athletic. Losing a large amount of weight never seemed necessary, because to me an athlete at 150 pounds seemed sort of normal. But toning up was definitely something I always knew I could improve on myself physically, because I never felt “beach body” ready when summer came, and I always focused on hiding certain parts of my body because I felt out of proportion. Since beginning kickboxing with TSMMA, I dropped 3 pants sizes (which many people cannot believe), I feel more confident and I am constantly creating new challenges for myself and pushing to do more. I have excellent instructors that not only provide a great workout, but teach me how to be productive and responsible for my health outside of training. The motivation to continue is supported by the changing kickboxing curriculum each week, continuous nutritional support, availability of each instructor to plan, discuss and work toward achieving fitness goals, and the unbelievable support system through training with a variety of peers without judgment or pressure.

As a 33 year old single mom, TSMMA also provided me with the affordability and flexibility to finish graduate school with a schedule I could manage. Does that mean it was easy to fit everything in? Absolutely not. So, what’s your excuse? My overall fitness became more of a priority when I joined in January 2013, and I stopped making excuses myself as to why I should put my health on the back burner. In addition, the TSMMA program offers more than just a great kickboxing workout. Each week, I am learning new techniques in self defense from a high ranking mixed martial arts instructor. I have become more disciplined with my everyday routines due to the structured format of each class. There are no opportunities for distractions during kickboxing class, and I am fully engaged in what I am doing when I train.

Everything I have gained through TSMMA has been invaluable in ensuring my safety, health and happiness as a mother, a woman and as a person.

Sensei Jose Montes is the owner/head instructor of TSMMA in Vails Gate, NY where I have consistently maintained my training. Although I never like to admit when I am wrong, I have to say that my initial assumptions were absolutely unfounded after meeting him and training with him for the first few weeks. He is unlike any other fitness instructor or mentor I have ever met. His faith in the TSMMA program, the school and his students is by far the cornerstone of his success as a martial arts instructor. I am so pleased with my results and I am thankful to have found a place where I not only enjoy being, but acquire new insight and personal achievement every time I am there. Sensei Montes is also assisted by instructor Shane Burgos, a professional mixed martial arts fighter with aspirations to one day fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) venue. Burgos was mentored by Sensei Montes and has become not only one of the top students, but a valuable asset in the Vails Gate school. Like Sensei Montes, Burgos continues to pass on his knowledge and vibrant, fast-paced energy into teaching during each kickboxing class. He has been a continuous motivation in pushing me to strive towards being a better athlete.

Everything I have gained through TSMMA has been invaluable in ensuring my safety, health and happiness as a mother, a woman and as a person. I would highly recommend TSMMA for anyone struggling to stay motivated with other fitness routines. The first kickboxing class is always free, so there is nothing to lose except a little extra sweat! It’s a great way to start off the New Year and the reward is priceless.
