How To Clean Your Kickboxing Gloves

By Featured Stories No Comments

Just like baseball players take care of their bats and hockey players take care of their sticks, martial arts students must also take care of their sporting equipment. Specifically focusing on those in a kickboxing class, the gloves? are one of the most important items to tend to. Below, we offer a few tips on how to keep them clean:

How To Clean Your Kickboxing Gloves– Always wipe off your gloves after use. It doesn’t make a difference if it is following an easy practice or rigorous competition – as soon as your hands come out, a paper towel or similar cleaning product should go in. Doing so consistently will help prevent moisture from sticking, which is a natural breeding ground for bacteria.

– Place the gloves in your freezer overnight. Although this sounds rather out of the ordinary, this method works to kill bacteria and can even eliminate foul odors that your gloves produce. However, if you need to use your gloves the next day, you may want to try a different approach as they require approximately 24-48 hours of air drying time following their freeze.

– Use an anti-bacterial spray to disinfect your gloves. Similar to the above tip, once you’re done allow them to air dry for a bit so that they aren’t wet the next time you go to put them on.

In addition to choosing one of the previously mentioned cleaning methods, remember that you can also keep your kickboxing gloves in good shape by taking them out of your bag when you arrive home. Instead of keeping them in a somewhat stuffy environment, giving them some time to breathe can help keep moisture at bay and prevent sweat from seeping into what could be tough-to-clean fabric.

Tiger Schulmann’s in Chelsea, NYC Hosts Happy Hearts Fund Kickboxing Fundraiser

By Current News No Comments

NEW YORK, New York (September 24, 2015) – Sensei Lyman Good, instructor at Tiger Schulmann’s in Chelsea, NYC, teamed up with Shihan Ron Schulmann and Happy Hearts Fund’s Petra Nemcova for a kickboxing fundraiser to raise money for schools in areas impacted by natural disasters. The event, which took place on Monday, September 21, 2015, was a huge success.

“We were very pleased with the outcome of this month’s fundraiser,” said Keith Gehshan, Marketing Manager for Tiger Schulmann’s. “As an organization that strives to connect with the community in addition to providing top-of-the-line martial arts instruction, we feel very strongly about the Happy Hearts Fund’s goals and are very grateful to be able to help with their efforts.”

Good, who recently won his debut fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), instructed participants on kickboxing moves and best practices. Everyone trained hard; Nemcova showed off her kicks, and actor Gary Wilmes, a student at Tiger Schulmann’s in Chelsea, NYC, also got involved.

“We’d like to thank Tiger Schulmann’s for its outstanding dedication to children and education through Happy Hearts Fund, and we’re excited about our ongoing collaboration,” said Ellie Libby-Manko, Director of Development for Happy Hearts Fund.“It truly was a special day for us all.”

The kickboxing fundraiser was just one in a series of charity events organized by Happy Hearts Fund and Tiger Schulmann’s. In June 2015, the two organizations collaborated on “Fight for Education,” in which students from Tiger Schulmann’s in Syosset, NY fought with Sensei Nick Gravina and Joshu Jobin George in the corners. The event raised over $900 thousand dollars to rebuild schools in Nepal with the rebuilding of the first four schools to start this October. It costs as little as $70,000 to rebuild a school, which doubles as emergency shelter for the village.

“It’s a great collaboration. Both Happy Hearts Fund and Tiger Schulmann are dedicated to helping children either through rebuilding sustainable schools or teaching self defense and self discipline,” said Tina Lindstrom, a “Fight for Education” committee member. “I’ve seen how Happy Hearts Fund has helped children and how Tiger Schulmann has helped my own 8 and 5-year-old children.” There will be a second “Fight for Education” in May 2016. Tiger Schulmann’s hopes to once again help Happy Hearts Fund raise funds and rebuild schools. Continue to visit www.tsk.com and www.happyheartsfund.org for more details.

The Difference Between Karate and Kickboxing

By Featured Stories No Comments

Though there are various martial arts disciplines, it isn’t unusual to hear people use their names interchangeably. However, when you really get to know the difference between each, you’ll come to realize that they aren’t quite so similar after all! To broaden your knowledge about the sport, today we’re covering the difference between karate? and kickboxing:?

The difference between karate and kickboxingKarate ?is most commonly referred to as a form of martial arts that occurs while standing. The top techniques focused on in this discipline are punching, kicking, blocks and take-downs. But don’t let the “kicking” aspect fool you into thinking that karate is the same as kickboxing - in karate, kicking is generally used as a strategy to keep opponents away during a fight, while it may serve many purposes in kickboxing.

At Tiger Schulmann’s, our karate classes (especially those for kids) place a huge emphasis on coordination and body awareness. Additionally, we focus on improving our students’ strength so that they are prepared to defend themselves in the event that they are approached.

Kickboxing, ?on the other hand, is a sport that is often viewed as combining various techniques from other martial arts forms into one. For example, at Tiger Schulmann’s, our kickboxing classes include an element of Muay Thai. And though kickboxing also focuses on techniques such as blocking and take-downs the way karate does, it also covers striking with hands, feet, elbows and knees. Here at Tiger Schulmann’s, we call this a “hybrid martial art,” while karate is a discipline of its own.

Despite their differences, one thing that ties karate and kickboxing together - especially at Tiger Schulmann’s - is their ability to help individuals improve their confidence and overall health.

To get started in a karate or kickboxing class at one of our 48 locations, head down to a school near you or contact us at (800) 528-4437 for more information. Tiger Schulmann’s – Kids Martial Arts Commercial – The Hat

By Kid's Martial Arts No Comments

This is the fourth and final installment in the “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s” kids martial arts commercial series. This installment focuses on an all too familiar situation that most kids can relate to. We all have been there growing up, either we have been the victim, seen this happen to another child, or in some circumstances may have even been the person performing this. This boy gets his hat taken by the bully. This is what we call level 2 bullying, where it’s gone beyond verbal bullying but not quite to the physical point. The bully will always test the waters and see where they can take it and how far they can go. Often times the bully is not a confident kid but weak. He or she is looking to impress his friends and looking for the approval of his peers by shaming someone else. The next step is taking it to a physical point, which is much harder for a child to stop. Tiger Schulmann’s teaches children to be confident in all aspects of their life. A confident kid does NOT get bullied, it’s that simple. They learn how to stop these confrontations before they ever start just by the way they carry themselves. At Tiger Schulmann’s, we start to teach a child confidence from the first day they walk into the school.

kids martial artsThis commercial is not putting down the importance of swimming. Swimming is one of the five life skills that you need. However, just like our other commercials, swimming is not going to help you in a real life bullying situation. It’s very simple there is nothing our there that does what we do for kids. If a child finds themselves in a situation where there are at this stage of bullying how could they protect themselves from this ever happening again? We teach kids how to carry themselves, how to be confident that they can defend themselves if need be. We would all like to believe that these kind of bullying situations don’t go on in schools, but the sad truth is it’s all too common. Teaching a child self defense is the all too important life skill that can’t be neglected. Self Defense + Discipline = Self Confidence… It’s our formula for success in our kids martial arts program. Through instilling discipline, we teach the child self defense. That same self discipline is carried over in to every aspect of their life, allowing them to achieve greatly in school and sports. When your child has great achievements they become a happy kid and a confident kid. What makes a happy parent? When their child is successful, confident and happy. Arm your kid with the best tools for success and give them the most important life skill they will ever need. Nothing Else Is Tiger Schulmann’s.

This is the third installment in the “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s” kids martial arts commercial series. This commercial focuses on a bullying situation that kids often face. Almost all children face a form verbal bullying, in this particular case someone is starting rumors about a young girl.  Verbal bullying is usually the first step in bullying, the bully tests the waters to see what they can get away with. This form of exclusion can be devastating for a child. It can make them feel isolated and alone. If a child is confident, these words roll off their back and kids who are confident usually aren’t a target. Tiger Schulmann’s teaches that confidence from day one.

kids martial artsNow, this commercial is not putting down singing lessons. Instead it offers a version of events where vocal lessons are just not applicable. Tiger Schulmann’s Launches “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s” Campaign

By Featured Stories No Comments

Have you heard? In honor of back-to-school season, we’ve launched a new campaign for kids called “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s.” The campaign, created with the help of Octopus Creative Group, aims at increasing awareness about our martial arts programs. Simply put, that’s because they are the key when it comes to children developing the self-confidence they need to confront bullies.

The new ads employ humor to remind students and parents that our instruction is the best available when it comes to learning how to deal with these types of situations. Check out the first commercial in the series, “The Playground,” below »

Think experience with the piano was really the reason these bullies took off? Sure piano may help this little one thrive in other situations, but just imagine what a background in martial arts could do. When it comes to being prepared for a potential threat, having self-defense skills is the real necessity.

Here’s the second commercial we have as part of this series – “The Ponytail” »

Though in this example the student is depicted as being “saved” by her participation in a dance class, in reality we know that isn’t enough to teach students all of the strategies they need when it comes to bullying. Once again, that’s where our martial arts programs come in.

If you have a child at home who recently started the new school year, there’s no reason not to send them to Tiger Schulmann’s – between our martial arts, karate and kickboxing classes, your child can become stronger and more confident, giving them everything they need to thrive in a school environment.
