About Tiger Schulmann’s: Part 2

By Featured Stories No Comments

About Tiger Schulmann'sA few months back, we introduced you to the Tiger Schulmann’s organization by outlining some of the details of our history. However, there is still so much more to learn! That’s why today, we’re picking up right where we left off and providing some more information about who we are and what we do.

With a mission to help both children and adults with their physical fitness and self-defense skills, our team offers everything from your basic mixed martial arts instruction to intense training in kickboxingkarate, Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. Additionally, being that we feel very strongly about bullying, we offer a bully prevention program to aid children in their efforts to stand up to bullies. Our bully shield events cover topics such as the three stages of bullying and how to diffuse a confrontation without things getting physical.

Now let’s go back to our history for just a moment – what do you know about the man who started it all? Did you know that Daniel “Tiger” Schulmann has won more than 100 competitions? In fact, he retired from his competitive career undefeated, at which point he created the style of martial arts we teach today: a hybrid approach that combines only the most effective streetwise self-defense tactics and strategies from all of the martial arts styles he studied.

When you choose Tiger Schulmann’s to be your one and only provider of martial arts instruction, you can rest assured knowing that you and/or your children will be working with staff that is top-of-the-line. Did you know that two of our instructors won their debut UFC fights this past summer? All of our coaches are highly skilled and trained by Tiger Schulmann himself, making them some of the most qualified available.

Basic Self-Defense Tips

By Featured Stories No Comments

We at Tiger Schulmann’s believe everyone should have at least a basic understanding of self-defense. If we don’t have a location near you (yet!) or you don’t have the time to attend one of our programs, this blog post is for you. Let’s go over some simple moves you can practice at home:

Walk with confidence

Your body language says a lot about you. Walking confidently could very well thwart an attacker from approaching you. That’s because they’re more likely to target someone who looks easily-frightened or insecure.

Be loud and clear

If you’re approached by an attacker and you don’t have a clear plan of escape, tell him or her to back off — and be loud and clear. Hopefully this will alert anyone nearby that you need help. You should also push back to show that you won’t be an easy target.

Know where to hit

MMA Fighter Punch

Four areas of the body are particularly sensitive: the eyes, nose, neck and knees. Gouge, poke or scratch your attacker’s eyes to inflict pain and blur vision. Strike up under your attacker’s nose with the bottom of your palm if you’re being approached from in front of you. Use a knife hand strike to your attacker’s neck; aim for the carotid artery and jugular vein. Knees are vulnerable from virtually every angle. Give your attacker’s knee a kick at the side to knock him off balance.

Our hope is that you never have to face an attacker. But should you ever find yourself in this horrible position, keep our self-defense tips in mind.

The second installment in the “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s” kids martial arts commercial series focuses on a typical bullying scenario among young girls either after school or during recess. While both ballet and dance are highly respectable forms of art, offering a number of benefits and skills for children, should a child find themselves in a bullying situation, these skills may not aid in the child’s overall confidence. Self Defense + Discipline = Self Confidence. The Tiger Schulmann’s kids martial arts program excels at teaching children the necessary techniques to defend themselves in real life situations as well as focusing on the essential self-discipline skills needed to achieve in school, sports, and across all areas of life. The coupling of these life skills (Self Defense and Self Discipline) has proven to lead to confident children, free of physical intimidation.

How To Handle Bullies During The Back-To-School Season

By Featured Stories No Comments

Although it may feel like summer just started, the truth of the matter is that it is officially the back-to-school season. That means it’s time to place our focus on bullying and go over various tactics that students can use if they encounter a bully during their time in the classroom, on the playground or in any other school environment.

If you have a school-aged child at home, here are a few things you’ll want them to keep in mind:

How to handle bullies during the back-to-school season

Display confidence: ?During the first few days of school, bullies are likely looking for potential targets. To avoid landing a spot on their list, we highly encourage all students to display a level of confidence the moment they step into their class. By standing tall, speaking clearly and walking with their head up, bullies will realize that your child is not one to get involved with.

Walk away:? When first approached by a bully, students may find that walking away is all it takes. Why? Since bullies are generally looking for some type of reaction, ignoring their comments and leaving the scene may stop them from targeting your child in the future. However, if the bully follows and continues with their antics, let your child know that they should always stand up for themselves. That’s where our next tip comes in.

Be assertive:? Should your child be confronted by a bully who just won’t leave them alone, it’s extremely important for them to be assertive in their response. Even if it’s just a simple “stop,” your child should always use an assertive tone to let the bully know they mean business!

Tell someone: ?Most importantly, emphasize just how important it is to tell an adult when bullied – that goes for children who stand up to bullies on their own, too. No matter the situation, it is especially important to involve a teacher, school administrator, even a parent, so that the bullying comes to an end.

Here at Tiger Schulmann’s, we are very involved with bully prevention - it is our goal to ensure that your children feel safe and confident in their abilities to protect themselves at all times. That’s why we host several Bully Shield events throughout the year where we cover topics such as what a bully is and the three stages of bullying. But, even if you can’t make one of those, our kids’ martial arts and karate classes are the perfect place for your children to learn the self-defense strategies they need to combat any bully they may face.

5 Fun Facts About Martial Arts

By Featured Stories No Comments

Think you know everything there is to know about martial arts? No matter how long you’ve been training, there’s always something new to learn. The ever-changing field of martial arts has a rich history. In fact, you may be surprised by some of these fun facts!

5 Fun Facts About Martial Arts

  1. Many of the martial arts we practice today originated in China, Japan and Korea. What most people don’t know is that the world has witnessed a variety of great fighters — from the Spartans to the Macedonians — who also trained in methodical fighting techniques and lived by a specific code of ethics.
  2. There are many more levels in martial arts training than just White Belt and Black Belt! Here they are, in order of beginner to expert: White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Red and Black.
  3. “Karate” is actually a combination of two words: kara (empty) and te (hand). The definition of karate, therefore, is self defense fighting with no weapons.
  4. Many people consider Bruce Lee to be the most influential martial artist in history. Why? Because he’s responsible for introducing Chinese martial arts to the entire world!
  5. Studying martial arts is known to greatly improve the lives of children living with ADHD. Kids who lack focus, have excess energy and tend to act out learn to channel those qualities into martial arts training.

Did you learn something new about martial arts by reading these facts? We sure hope so! We’d love to hear your fun facts as well, so be sure to share your thoughts with us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Safety Tips For Martial Arts Students

By Featured Stories No Comments

Just like any other sport or activity, martial arts requires the need to pay attention to safety. For both students and instructors, it is extremely important to be proactive about safety in any setting where martial arts is practiced, as it can be very easy to acquire an injury due to the types of techniques that are taught (kicking and punching, for example).

Since we at Tiger Schulmann’s are huge proponents of making sure that our schools are a safe environment for all, today we’re covering some safety basics that martial arts students should know:

Safety Tips For Martial Arts Students

Wear the proper clothing:? Any clothing, safety gear and equipment should always be a perfect fit. When clothes are baggy or equipment is too small, it can increase the risk of injury for both the student and their instructor. To learn more about the attire we require at Tiger Schulmann’s, give us a call prior to your first class.

Always warm up: ?Engaging in activity without stretching or performing the proper warmups is critical to prevent muscle injuries during class. Additionally, it’s also important to cool muscles down once activity is done for the day. Here at Tiger Schulmann’s we always make sure that our students’ bodies are prepared before we get into the more rigorous work, but to stay in tip-top shape, we think it’s a good idea to stretch at home too!

Be honest: ?If at any point you suspect that you have an injury, be honest with your instructor and let them know exactly where it hurts. Putting off medical attention will only cause more damage and can put a halt on your martial arts training for longer than needed. Even if you’re simply feeling sore, your best bet is to let your instructor know so that they can take the proper steps to help you heal.

As one of the leading martial arts organizations, the team here at Tiger Schulmann’s goes above and beyond to guarantee the safety of our students in all of our classes. For more information about our programs and where you can find a location near you, be sure to check out the rest of our website or give us a call at (800) 528-4437 today.
