Mother of 2 Loses 27lbs in 4 months Kickboxing

By Current News, featured news, TSMMA Bay Ridge No Comments
before and after weight loss

Romona lost 27 pounds kickboxing at Tiger Schulmann’s in only 4 months training 3 to 5 classes a week.

My name is Romona H. Singh, 38 years old and mother of 2 TSMMA Students from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  For two years, Jenna Serio and Sensei Levy tried to get me to try a kickboxing class, which I made all sorts of excuses.  Maybe I was embarrassed since I was going to the gym repeatedly as of 2007 and my weight kept going up and up.  Joshu Regman came to Bay Ridge, and started asking me every time he saw me “when are you taking class?” One day he grabbed my wrist, and said “how will you get defend this in a street situation?”

For the Mother’s Night, Joshu Regman and/or Jaime Benson Garita (dual effort) signed my name up on the list.  I said let me take this stupid kickboxing class and get these people out of my hair.  I did the class and I fell in love with the authentic kickboxing training, aggression and adrenaline rush instantly.  Since June to October 2014, I’ve lost a total of 27 lbs (bring my weight down from 152 to 125 lbs) just training consistently about 3-5 classes per week.  Without the training, encouragement and guidance of Sensei Levy, Sensei Good, Joshu Regman, Elaine Lam, Colin Tennyson, Jaime Benson-Garita, Lyndell Doulin, and Rashaad Mason (my first partner who kept pushing me for weeks on the mat as if I was training for a cage fight) I would probably still be at the gym with knees and ankles pain and stuck at 150 plus pounds.  OSU!!!

From New Year’s Resolution to Lifestyle Transformation: TSMMA Brick Student’s Success Story

I learned from these past five years training at Tiger schulmann’s, to not be afraid or intimidated to make certain decisions, because any single one of them can change things for the better.

We all make thousands of decisions throughout a single day, and I never thought that just one of those would change my life completely. That decision was on January 21st, 2009, to take my first class at Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts.

As far back as I can remember I was always shy, and I always had my older sister to stick up for me whenever anyone tried to push me around. I remember being in middle school on the bus ride home when two boys were making fun of me; I just sat there and let them, then my sister stood up from anther seat and punched one of them. My shy personality became even more insecure when I was in high school. Not only had my sister graduated, so I had no “body guard” but I was also gaining a lot of weight, which hit my confidence even harder. I stayed quiet in school, never really talking to anyone but my small group of friends. I live five minutes from the beach and never wanted to go. I used to make excuses how, “it’s so boring. I hate just laying there. It’s always too crowded,” when in reality I never wanted anyone to see me in a bathing suit. Even at friends’ pools, I covered up my bikini with either shorts or a tee shirt.

I graduated in 2007 at 189 pounds (at least that’s what my weight was when I decided to never step on the scale again). Throughout the next couple of years I tried to lose the weight: running, gym memberships, weight loss programs, counting points, counting calories, I even had “buddies” to keep me motivated, but nothing seemed to work.

January 2009, I made the same New Years resolution I had made at least three times before that. I remember watching a Tiger Schulmann’s commercial and thinking to myself “maybe I should try that.” The next thing I knew I had picked up the phone and dialed the number. I didn’t expect myself to actually sign up, I just planned to call, get some information, hang up, let the note sit, and consider that progress. Instead I found myself excited about doing something different, and scheduled to take a class just a few days later. I remember almost everything from that first class, but mainly how much fun I had, how much of a great workout it was, and how I became instantly hooked.

8 weight stages

I lost weight immediately. That March I started my first “90 Day Challenge,” and weighed in at 165lbs. I was excited at my progress so far and eager to continue. Finally, something worked for me. I have trained consistently since that very first class and have lost over 50 pounds! I was shocked at what I lost, but also surprised at what I gained: I never had this much confidence before. I’m proud and happy with the person I have become, I hold my head up high, and I’m not afraid to stand up for myself when I need it. I have set and achieved so many goals that I never even thought I would be capable of. I am much more outgoing and I love meeting new people (and I love going to the beach!). Not only that, but the friendships I gained from other students is one of a kind. I met a lot of wonderful people, each with their own backgrounds and reasons as to why they started. All of them are so helpful and supportive, especially during those tough times when I felt stuck. I am thankful for all of my training partners and Sensei Colontino for helping me get to where I am today.

I have trained consistently since that very first class and have lost over 50 pounds! I was shocked at what I lost, but also surprised at what I gained: I never had this much confidence before.

I joined for one reason, which was to lose weight, and never did I expect the results to transform me completely. Along with my weight loss and confidence, I have also found a new hobby which I love, competed in several Challenge of Champions, and NAGA tournaments and am currently working towards my goal of becoming a black belt. Another thing I learned from these past five years is to not be afraid or intimidated to make certain decisions, because any single one of them can change things for the better.

85 Pounds Lost, Body Transformed at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA

Murphys-PICTURE

I first started training at TSMMA back in January 2010. At the time, I weighed 216 pounds, lacked confidence and was very unhappy with my appearance. This caused me to frequently battle with feelings of anger and depression. Realizing I needed to do something for myself, I joined TSMMA Syosset because I always enjoyed watching UFC and wanted to try something different than just another gym.

I joined TSMMA Syosset because I always enjoyed watching UFC and wanted to try something different than just another gym.

What I found there while training under Sensei Nick Gravina was far more than just a workout; it was an experience that positively changed the entire way I lived my life. By that spring I had lost 30 pounds and began to really perfect my technique. More importantly, my feelings of anger and depression began to disappear just as fast as the inches off my waste and my confidence grew with each drop of sweat left on the mat.

By that spring I had lost 30 pounds and began to really perfect my technique.

Unfortunately, a combination of school and work forced me to stop training toward the end of 2010. From then until September 2012, I gradually regained the 30 pounds I had lost as well as an additional 25. Once again I found myself often feeling angry and depressed and lacking confidence. By my 29th Birthday in August 2012, I realized that I could no longer continue living in such an unhealthy way both physically and mentally. I would turn 30 a year later and knew my family had a history of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. I promised myself then that by the time I turned 30 I would be in the best shape of my life to avoid similar health problems and also rebuild my mental strength and discipline.

Unfortunately, a combination of school and work forced me to stop training toward the end of 2010. From then until September 2012, I gradually regained the 30 pounds

I knew exactly where to go. I joined TSMMA Seaford and never looked back. Training under Sensei Joe Belluomo for over a year now I have seen myself lose 85 pounds, transform my body into the greatest shape its ever been throughout my entire life, and find the focus, confidence and discipline I was sorely lacking. Initially my goal was a simple one; lose weight. As I lost weight, however, my goals changed. I didn’t just want to be skinny. I wanted to be as toned as possible. I didn’t want to just hit a bag, I wanted to have perfect technique and challenge myself in advanced grappling and sparring classes. I didn’t just want to ‘survive’ a class, I wanted to ‘attack’ a class with every ounce of energy I had and set an example for others. I now hope to continue advancing toward my Black Belt and maybe to even teach TSMMA classes.

I knew exactly where to go. I joined TSMMA Seaford and never looked back. Training under Sensei Joe Belluomo for over a year now I have seen myself lose 85 pounds, transform my body into the greatest shape its ever been throughout my entire life

Thanks to Sensei Belluomo and TSMMA I was able to keep the promise I made to myself on my 29th Birthday of being in the best shape of my life when I turned 30. Thanks to Sensei Belluomo and TSMMA I am also a better, stronger, more successful person than I’ve ever been before. I owe much to Sensei Belluomo and TSMMA, but the most important thing I’ve learned is to never give up on myself. It was that simple concept that allowed me to achieve what I have in the past year and one I share with every new student who walks into our school. The results I achieved are attainable for everyone so long as they just never give up on themselves. In fact, after seeing my results, my 51 year old mother even joined TSMMA Seaford and has now lost 40 pounds of her own. TSMMA Seaford has become our extended family and will always be an essential part of our lives moving forward.

Jen-A-130lbs

By: TSMMA Paramus

Last year, Paramus Mixed Martial Arts student Jen Annunziato wrote a testimonial about her successes in weight loss, physical conditioning, increased energy, and change of life.  At the time she wrote it, Jen had lost a great amount of weight (130lbs in total) and WOWED us with her progress!  Not only had she achieved the goals she set for herself, but she surpassed them.  She hasn’t stopped to rest yet.  She’s still losing weight, still working hard and is just as enthusiastic in her training as ever.  She is an asset to the school and is a first-hand account of what discipline, hard work and perseverance can do.  We’re extremely proud to have her as a student here at Paramus Mixed Martial Arts.

Keep it up, Jen!

No Challenge Too Great for TSMMA Stamford Student : MMA Training Key to Success

Determination, discipline, focus, desire and heart are some of the attributes we associate with our TSMMA fighters. These attributes can also be associated with any Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts student. Sophia Lowenberg has demonstrated these fighter attributes whether training on the mat or playing on the soccer field.

stamford mma2

Determination, discipline, focus, desire and heart are some of the attributes we associate with our TSMMA fighters.

Three years ago at the age of 5 years old, Sophia made Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts history by becoming the youngest student to ever achieve a black belt and the title of Sempai.

Sophia was not your average five-year-old little girl; she is an accomplished Black Belt. When she was home, instead of playing with dolls or watching TV, she pretended she was an instructor and taught a martial arts class, and she practiced her kicks, punches and boxing combinations. While kids ran and played at recess at school, Sophia could be found practicing her push-ups.

Sophia had a goal to be the best, to achieve her goals and dreams of becoming a Sempai.  With this came blood, sweat, tears, desire, focus and heart, as Sensei Nick Demetrius, Head Instructor of TSMMA Stamford, trained Sophia to be strong mentally, and physically from day one of her training

Sophia had a goal to be the best, to achieve her goals and dreams of becoming a Sempai.

When it was decided that she would be a black belt candidate, he made sure to give her that extra push that she needed. Sensei Demetrius knew what she would be up against, and all the obstacles she would have to overcome, and as her instructor, he wanted to make sure she was prepared.

He accomplished this by having her train with classmates who were older, stronger and bigger. Even when her adorable little eyes would well up with tears, he would push her and make her keep going. He saw the bigger picture that she was learning is a life skill.  She was not only learning how to defend herself, but also in addition, training her mind and body to keep going when her body was ready to give up. All these essential skills would eventually be the key to what made it possible for her to prepare and achieve her goal of becoming a black belt.

Three years later, her strong martial arts foundation and fighter qualities have proven in helping Sophia shine and dominate the soccer fields. Currently, Sophia is playing on with travel soccer team and the premier development team for English Premier team Everton Football Club.

Three years later, her strong martial arts foundation and fighter qualities have proven in helping Sophia shine and dominate the soccer fields.

Currently, at 8 years old, Sophia has walked away with more than just the black belt, which she wears around her waist. She walked away with life skills that have helped her excel in other aspects of her life like education where she applies her focus, discipline and determination to her studies as well as on the soccer field.

Coach John Hall, Sophia’s soccer coach shared his thoughts about Sophia:

I have been Sophia’s soccer coach for more than a year, and what I notice about Sophia is she is a very determined player. She was playing up two age groups for travel soccer U9 team when she was 7, and was way more aggressive and determined than everybody else on the team.

Currently, she is now on an U10 team at the age of 8, and still competes physically and mentally with girls who are bigger and stronger. Her mom stated she trains in mixed martial arts and you can certainly see that in her character as a player. If she is hurt or tired she will still continue to give 100%. With this comes agility and balance, her upper body strength and balance are excellent, her marital art training has played an integral part in improving these attributes.  She is my go to player, which I can count on to play a full hour of a soccer game due to her discipline, cardio conditioning as well as her commitment with out any water breaks.

stamford mma5

He has taught her to believe in herself, push herself beyond pain, fear of failure as well as always testing herself and raising that bar.

I would like to express my gratitude to Sensei Demetrius for all his time and hard work over the years. His patience and teaching style in training Sophia and is continuing commitment and dedication to her as well as all of his students is a gift.

He has given my daughter a gift that not even, I as a parent could have possibly offered her, which is teaching her self defense which as a female she will always have as a tool should she need to protect herself in the future. But more importantly, he has taught her to believe in herself, push herself beyond pain, fear of failure as well as always testing herself and raising that bar. One of the qualities many people comment on is there is not anything she can’t do, especially if she challenged.  She will show you she can accomplish anything by raising her bar and game to meet whatever obstacles is in her way to achieving her goals.

For that I will always be grateful to Sensei Demetrius for what he has done for my little girl.
