Martial Arts For Kids: How To Prepare For The First Class

With back to school season approaching, its important to find a program that can improve both self confidence and physical fitness for kids. martial arts is a great choice 100 percent of the time. Not only can it increase an child’s strength, flexibility and stamina, but it can also lead to more empowering thoughts that, in turn, encourage one to be able to stand up for themselves in a variety of situations.

At Tiger Schulmann’s, we offer several classes that cater to participants of all ages and skill levels. Specifically focusing on kids, though, here are a few tips to prepare for the first class:

  • Dress comfortably: Having the proper attire is key in order to succeed in class. If your child’s arms and legs cannot move freely during activity, it can be rather difficult to keep up. To learn what is required of Tiger Schulmann’s participants, contact the class instructor prior to arrival.

 

  • Keep hydrated:Before class begins, children should make it a priority to hydrate themselves by drinking enough water. Then, they should keep a bottle by their side during class time so that they can quench their thirst once activity begins. Finally, it is important to drink plenty of water after class as well to replenish the body with fluids.

 

  • Start slow: The instructor knows exactly how to pace the class depending on age and ability, so it is important to follow their instructions closely. Although children may be excited, overdoing it could be dangerous and cause a serious injury. At Tiger Schulmann’s, all of our instructors are professional and qualified, so you can rest assured knowing that your child won’t be given more than they can handle on the first day.

Fight Like a Girl – A Short Film by Jillian Rivera

“Fight Like a Girl” is a short 5-minute documentary about how several women in the organization use martial arts as a form of empowerment and as an escape from sexual assault.

These women include Sensei Munah Holland (TSMA North Plainfield), Nicole Tuminski (TSMA Englewood), Naima El Jaouhari (TSMA Chelsea), Lauren Fish (TSMA New Windsor), Sophia Mirabella (TSMA Chelsea), Kim Ansaldo (TSMA Chelsea), Danielle Harrington (TSMA Princeton), and the director herself, Jillian “Grizzly” Rivera (TSMA Yonkers).

In the film, the women discuss why they chose martial arts, and how it has helped them in life. They disclose personal experiences with sexual assault and abuse, and how they encourage women everywhere to take action and stand up for themselves with martial arts.

I chose to make this film because as I am getting older and becoming more aware of the world, I am noticing that how no matter how much you hope and pray, not everyone will be treated equally. And we cannot control the way other people want to treat us. However, we can control how we react to those people, how we feel about ourselves, and how we demand to be treated with respect.

Throughout my years of training in this organization, I have met so many hardworking and confident women who I look up to. I wanted to talk to them personally (and with a camera, no big deal) about their own life experiences with sexual assault, and how they deal with it, since it is a topic that has had a lot of attention, lately.

I learned so many things about these women that I had never known. Coming from different backgrounds, they all had different stories, but the one thing that they all had in common was that they have experienced harassment, discrimination, assault, and/or abuse because of their gender.

Once they all started training at Tiger Schulmann’s, they felt liberated and confident knowing that they have the knowledge and skills necessary to defend themselves.

When “Fight Like a Girl” was screened at my school, Fordham University, all I could think was, “Who knows how many people in this very room are going through the same exact thing right now?” I got goosebumps. This is why I wanted to create this film. I wanted to let those people know that they are not alone.

I want to help put an end to the battle of the sexes, and will fight for the equality of all genders, races, religions, etc. I created this film for women everywhere. I want every woman and young girl to see this film and feel empowered, knowing that they have the ability to fight back and stand up for themselves. No more feeling like a victim or a potential victim. It’s time to take action.

Who is the Jillian Rivera?

Jillian “Grizzly” Rivera started Tiger Schulmann’s at five years old, because her parents wanted her to learn how to defend herself. They knew that being a female in today’s society was risky, and that she would eventually be a target for assault and discrimination. She worked her way up in the ranks, and excelled quickly in the sport. Not only did she excel in martial arts, but she also excelled in her schoolwork, piano lessons, and other sports.

With her experience in martial arts, Jillian has developed the confidence to try new things, and the self-discipline to not quit when things get difficult. Martial arts taught her to be a perfectionist, and to always try her best. She is now a 1st degree black belt, and an amateur fighter with a record of 1-0.

‘Grizzly’ got her nickname from Shihan Tirelli in Yonkers, because she is a very soft-spoken and polite young lady, but once she gets on the mat to fight, she’ll maul you like a Grizzly bear.

Jillian will be stepping  out of her comfort zone of being barefoot and sweaty on the mat, and on May 11, she will be competing for the title of Miss Teen New York Earth USA at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center.

How To Clean Your Kickboxing Gloves

Just like baseball players take care of their bats and hockey players take care of their sticks, martial arts students must also take care of their sporting equipment. Specifically focusing on those in a kickboxing class, the gloves? are one of the most important items to tend to. Below, we offer a few tips on how to keep them clean:

How To Clean Your Kickboxing Gloves– Always wipe off your gloves after use. It doesn’t make a difference if it is following an easy practice or rigorous competition – as soon as your hands come out, a paper towel or similar cleaning product should go in. Doing so consistently will help prevent moisture from sticking, which is a natural breeding ground for bacteria.

– Place the gloves in your freezer overnight. Although this sounds rather out of the ordinary, this method works to kill bacteria and can even eliminate foul odors that your gloves produce. However, if you need to use your gloves the next day, you may want to try a different approach as they require approximately 24-48 hours of air drying time following their freeze.

– Use an anti-bacterial spray to disinfect your gloves. Similar to the above tip, once you’re done allow them to air dry for a bit so that they aren’t wet the next time you go to put them on.

In addition to choosing one of the previously mentioned cleaning methods, remember that you can also keep your kickboxing gloves in good shape by taking them out of your bag when you arrive home. Instead of keeping them in a somewhat stuffy environment, giving them some time to breathe can help keep moisture at bay and prevent sweat from seeping into what could be tough-­to­-clean fabric.

The Difference Between Karate and Kickboxing

Though there are various martial arts disciplines, it isn’t unusual to hear people use their names interchangeably. However, when you really get to know the difference between each, you’ll come to realize that they aren’t quite so similar after all! To broaden your knowledge about the sport, today we’re covering the difference between karate? and kickboxing:?

The difference between karate and kickboxingKarate ?is most commonly referred to as a form of martial arts that occurs while standing. The top techniques focused on in this discipline are punching, kicking, blocks and take-­downs. But don’t let the “kicking” aspect fool you into thinking that karate is the same as kickboxing ­- in karate, kicking is generally used as a strategy to keep opponents away during a fight, while it may serve many purposes in kickboxing.

At Tiger Schulmann’s, our karate classes (especially those for kids) place a huge emphasis on coordination and body awareness. Additionally, we focus on improving our students’ strength so that they are prepared to defend themselves in the event that they are approached.

Kickboxing, ?on the other hand, is a sport that is often viewed as combining various techniques from other martial arts forms into one. For example, at Tiger Schulmann’s, our kickboxing classes include an element of Muay Thai. And though kickboxing also focuses on techniques such as blocking and take­-downs the way karate does, it also covers striking with hands, feet, elbows and knees. Here at Tiger Schulmann’s, we call this a “hybrid martial art,” while karate is a discipline of its own.

Tiger Schulmann’s Launches “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s” Campaign

Have you heard? In honor of back-to-school season, we’ve launched a new campaign for kids called “Nothing Else is Tiger Schulmann’s.” The campaign, created with the help of Octopus Creative Group, aims at increasing awareness about our martial arts programs. Simply put, that’s because they are the key when it comes to children developing the self-confidence they need to confront bullies.

The new ads employ humor to remind students and parents that our instruction is the best available when it comes to learning how to deal with these types of situations. Check out the first commercial in the series, “The Playground,” below »

Think experience with the piano was really the reason these bullies took off? Sure piano may help this little one thrive in other situations, but just imagine what a background in martial arts could do. When it comes to being prepared for a potential threat, having self-defense skills is the real necessity.

Basic Self-Defense Tips

We at Tiger Schulmann’s believe everyone should have at least a basic understanding of self-defense. If we don’t have a location near you (yet!) or you don’t have the time to attend one of our programs, this blog post is for you. Let’s go over some simple moves you can practice at home:

Walk with confidence

Your body language says a lot about you. Walking confidently could very well thwart an attacker from approaching you. That’s because they’re more likely to target someone who looks easily-frightened or insecure.

Be loud and clear

If you’re approached by an attacker and you don’t have a clear plan of escape, tell him or her to back off — and be loud and clear. Hopefully this will alert anyone nearby that you need help. You should also push back to show that you won’t be an easy target.

Know where to hit

MMA Fighter Punch

Four areas of the body are particularly sensitive: the eyes, nose, neck and knees. Gouge, poke or scratch your attacker’s eyes to inflict pain and blur vision. Strike up under your attacker’s nose with the bottom of your palm if you’re being approached from in front of you. Use a knife hand strike to your attacker’s neck; aim for the carotid artery and jugular vein. Knees are vulnerable from virtually every angle. Give your attacker’s knee a kick at the side to knock him off balance.

Our hope is that you never have to face an attacker. But should you ever find yourself in this horrible position, keep our self-defense tips in mind.

How To Handle Bullies During The Back-­To-­School Season

Although it may feel like summer just started, the truth of the matter is that it is officially the back-­to-­school season. That means it’s time to place our focus on bullying and go over various tactics that students can use if they encounter a bully during their time in the classroom, on the playground or in any other school environment.

If you have a school-­aged child at home, here are a few things you’ll want them to keep in mind:

How to handle bullies during the back-to-school season

Display confidence: ?During the first few days of school, bullies are likely looking for potential targets. To avoid landing a spot on their list, we highly encourage all students to display a level of confidence the moment they step into their class. By standing tall, speaking clearly and walking with their head up, bullies will realize that your child is not one to get involved with.

Walk away:? When first approached by a bully, students may find that walking away is all it takes. Why? Since bullies are generally looking for some type of reaction, ignoring their comments and leaving the scene may stop them from targeting your child in the future. However, if the bully follows and continues with their antics, let your child know that they should always stand up for themselves. That’s where our next tip comes in.

Be assertive:? Should your child be confronted by a bully who just won’t leave them alone, it’s extremely important for them to be assertive in their response. Even if it’s just a simple “stop,” your child should always use an assertive tone to let the bully know they mean business!

Tell someone: ?Most importantly, emphasize just how important it is to tell an adult when bullied – that goes for children who stand up to bullies on their own, too. No matter the situation, it is especially important to involve a teacher, school administrator, even a parent, so that the bullying comes to an end.

Here at Tiger Schulmann’s, we are very involved with bully prevention -­ it is our goal to ensure that your children feel safe and confident in their abilities to protect themselves at all times. That’s why we host several Bully Shield events throughout the year where we cover topics such as what a bully is and the three stages of bullying. But, even if you can’t make one of those, our kids’ martial arts and karate classes are the perfect place for your children to learn the self-­defense strategies they need to combat any bully they may face.
