Tiger Schulmann's Martial Arts | Challenge of Champions

A Family that Trains Together Benefits Together

Our 6 year old son and 8 year old daughter were taking Taekwondo at a local school. Our daughter dropped out after receiving 3 belts promotions, our son was getting bored with the curriculum, and frustrated that kids who didn’t deserve belts were getting them. Our son was the first to mention Tiger Schulmann’s and between the TV commercials and driving past the storefront almost every day, he convinced us to allow him to give it a try.  I have to admit that at his first trial we were quite taken back by how physical the class was – much welcome change for him..lots of kicking, punching, learning how to defend yourself.  He LOVED it and we signed him up right away.

“I have to admit that at his first trial we were quite taken back by how physical the class was – much welcome change for him..lots of kicking, punching, learning how to defend yourself.  He LOVED it and we signed him up right away.”

Not too long after, I received an email about the 90 day challenge that started in January 2015.  I forwarded it to my husband (kinda hoping he would say no) and said “Wanna do this with me?”.  I for one, was ready for a change..heading over 200 lbs., no energy and not happy.  We always tried to eat healthy, my husband more than me…I even tried a personal trainer which toned me up a little, but I didn’t get the “you should eat better” message he was trying to tell me.  I would cook at home with lots of butter, fried a lot of foods, we enjoyed eating out, soda/wine/mixed drinks at night.  We decided together, enough was enough and we signed up.

“I had done Weight Watchers before, but this was different.”

Our first class was preceded by an informative meeting with Joshu Fischetti, Alex and the other 90 day challenge participants. I had done Weight Watchers before, but this was different.  I felt like I got hit in the head with a brick learning how badly we were eating, but I wasn’t all that excited about the changes we were going to make. Then came time for “class”… It felt like it was 2 hours long, challenging.. but FUN!  We went in with no idea what the class would be like..it was enlightening and motivating. We really enjoyed learning what I wouldn’t call “Kickboxing” but more Self Defense and ways to protect yourself. After class we went home and emptied our cabinets of all the bad food stuff and made a pact to DO THIS!  We made a list and went food shopping and started prepping meals.  We were more determined every day to make the best eating choices we could. The Facebook page also helped with inspiration and pictures of meals, recipes.. Hey this isn’t so bad!

Our daughter became interested after my husband and I started taking regular classes.  She would have to sit and watch her brother first, then us complete our classes.  Every class she would mimic the moves from her spot in the waiting area and gained confidence in her abilities..she wanted to join too!

“Every class she would mimic the moves from her spot in the waiting area and gained confidence in her abilities..she wanted to join too!”

That’s how it all began for us and only got better because doing this as a family is so motivating in itself – to have that kind of support and knowing you are setting a great example for your kids was just what we needed.

Working with Joshu Mike Fischetti, and Alex Cintron has been an amazing experience.  From our first meeting we were taken with their candidness and knowledge..not only from a business standpoint but personal as well. They really got to know us and genuinely cared about the journey we were about to take.  They teach us to push ourselves, in both the classes and our life..take that next step, do more than you think you can, get out of your comfort zone. The way they conduct classes for both kids and adults is sincerely motivating, without intimidation, judgement or the feeling that you’re getting punished. This has made a huge impact on the way we conduct ourselves in class and out of class. Joshu and Alex also helped our kids (and us) by speaking to them behind closed doors about their behaviors in school and at home.  Rob, who works with them at the Seaford NY location, has also been a pleasure. He’s so helpful and takes the time to talk to the kids and teach them correct form and positioning. Our kids really respect Joshu Fischetti, Alex and Rob. Our “Classmates” have been awesome as well.. it means a lot how genuine, friendly and welcoming everyone there is.

“Since completing the 90day challenge, at the age of 45..I am down 25 lbs. I’m so much happier and I finally feel in control of myself and my weight. My husband at 42, has lost over 35 lbs. and looks amazing!”

So here we are…Much better off than we were at the beginning of 2015. Since completing the 90day challenge, at the age of 45..I am down 25 lbs. I’m so much happier and I finally feel in control of myself and my weight. My husband at 42, has lost over 35 lbs. and looks amazing!  We have so much more energy and stamina, a renewed approach to eating/drinking and truly enjoying life! We all look forward to our classes and are determined to continue on and reach our goals. Our kids have benefited as well, they are in great shape and their self esteem is growing. They help us keep on track with our eating and are trying new foods with us. We are becoming a force to be reckoned with and I pity the fool who tries to bully or abduct our kids, steal my pocketbook, tries to hurt my husband or myself – they won’t know what hit ‘em!  OSU!

Mixed Martial Arts Competition Builds Confidence

By Current News, TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

The Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (TSMMA) Challenge of Champions tournament is always just around the corner. Over a thousand competitors register for the bi-annual event to test their limits and go the distance against other individuals within their same age, weight and skill level. Although the tournament is a venue where contenders look to earn the high achievement of a first place win, it has become much more than that for many of its participants who are “Challenging the Champion Within.

Many participants are attempting their first match, while veteran TSMMA students such as RYAN BURGOS of Vails Gate, NY has not only competed in the Challenge of Champions for several years, but also holds many notable wins in competitions through the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) and Grappler’s Quest. The 13 year old, 5 foot tall phenom has been studying mixed martial arts for almost 8 years and earned his black belt at the age of 10. Ryan is the youngest and the first of three brothers to join TSMMA. His oldest brother, “Hurricane” Shane Burgos is a TSMMA professional fighter and instructor, as well as a prospect for future UFC venues. Jake Burgos is also a black belt mixed martial artist with several prominent tournament wins in both grappling and kickboxing, and is a prospective future fighter for the TSMMA fight team.

Like elite athletes that are constantly aiming for excellence, Ryan prides himself on being able to set goals for himself and aim for success. Even at such a young age, his mindset to improve his skill and learn from his mistakes are part of the reason he excels in mixed martial arts. “I like competing because I want to know who I need to beat to be the best. I test myself every time I step in the ring, and I learn to be better than the last time.” He recalls several memories that have helped him become a more successful athlete, but remembers a time when his skills were put to the test against a competitor that challenged the judge’s decision to grant him the win. “I had to go against another boy a second time because his coach felt the call was unfair. So it was decided that we would compete again with no time limit as a submission only match.” Ryan was able to achieve the win once more and felt that the opportunity to present his skills in a high pressure situation with a large audience was one of the greatest ways to test his will and determination. Ryan’s success on the mat as a mixed martial artist has also transferred into a very lucrative wrestling trade at the middle school level. His drive and motivation during the 2014 wrestling season earned him “Most Valuable Player” with an undefeated record of 12-0.

I know what I am capable of and I am confident because of it.

Although the medals, trophies and recognition for being such a high level competitor are grand perks of the trade, Ryan simply enjoys the sport for what it has provided him and his family. Many parents often seek out martial arts schools to address issues with low self-esteem, bullying and poor social or academic performance. Since Ryan began his training so early, he believes that is the reason he never needed to worry about those issues. His outgoing, headstrong personality is a result of the discipline and focus he learned at a young age. “Some people think what I do is cool, and others doubt my abilities, but I know what I am capable of and I am confident because of it.” Ryan also finds that having two older brothers that are equally capable and successful mixed martial artists gives him something to strive toward. He looks forward to training with his brothers and continues to learn how to improve his skills against two larger, stronger individuals that may not necessarily take it easy on him. When asked what inspires him to compete, Ryan does not hesitate to give credit to his family for the support and opportunities he has had.

RBurgos1

There is no doubt that Ryan has a bright future ahead of him. He has been a symbol of leadership and continues to exceed the expectations of his TSMMA instructors and peers. As an aggressive and skilled competitor, Ryan continues to dominate as a mixed martial artist in many tournaments and has been featured on several TSMMA advertisements and commercials. “You have to go out there and just do it or you’ll miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Ryan finds these words of inspiration to be a catalyst for achieving greatness each time he steps on the mat, and spectators are very anxious to see what he brings into the next competition.

Benefits of Mixed Martial Arts

Benefits of Mixed Martial Arts

There are many advantages of practicing martial arts, both mental and physical! Below, we take a closer look at the benefits of Mixed Martial Arts:

Easy to follow

One major downside to joining a gym is that you may not know what to do. It can be both intimidating and dangerous. Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts program, on the other hand, offers the structure you need to reach your fitness goals and stay motivated. The environment is safe and you are instructed at a pace which is challenging, but not beyond your abilities.

Great exercise

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of US adults are obese. Significant, long-term weight loss cannot be achieved through change in diet alone. Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts program builds lean muscle while keeping your heart and lungs healthy too.

Fun

One of the most important benefits of Mixed Martial Arts is that it’s enjoyable! If you’re not having fun while you exercise, you probably won’t stick to it. Where fitness club workouts become the same old routine, Tiger Schulmann’s classes are exciting; you’ll find yourself wanting to come back for more!

Stress relief

During the day, we all build levels of stress need a release. In a recent survey by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health, 49 percent of people reported having a “major stressful event or experience” within the past year. What’s more, they responded to stress in unhealthy ways – like sleeping less and eating more. Practicing Mixed Martial Arts is a healthy way to relieve stress, no matter your age.

Boosted confidence

Most of us could use a little more confidence. Working out, in itself, has been proven to improve confidence, thanks to both releasing endorphins and seeing results. What makes Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts programs unique? Our instructors instill confidence-building values, like working hard and never giving up.

The benefits of Mixed Martial Arts are endless. To learn more about Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts program, dial (800) 528-4437 today. Don’t forget to connect with us on social media! Tiger Schulmann’s: About Us!

About Tiger Schulmann's

Founded by Tiger Schulmann himself, we first began offering a variety of martial arts classes to men, women and children of all ages in 1984. The primary focus was karate, but with kickboxing and mixed martial arts added in. After achieving great success in his personal life, Tiger devoted himself to giving back by teaching others about the art that he had so thoroughly mastered. As a result, we made providing top of the line training our number one priority, and designed several different programs that would help each participant build confidence, achieve great levels of physical fitness and develop a solid foundation that carries them through life.

With 48 locations throughout the East Coast, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Florida, we welcome individuals of all skill levels to partake in our programs. For children, we have created an environment that teaches self-discipline and how to set and achieve goals while offering them the opportunity to experience what it feels like to develop a great sense of accomplishment. For adults, we focus on physical fitness by introducing them to strategic routines and techniques that improve strength, flexibility, endurance and more.

At our various locations, programs include (but are not limited to), kickboxing, mixed martial arts and kid’s karate. Regardless of which program you choose, we are confident that you will feel more confident, fit and accomplished than ever before.
