As your skills improve, you will earn a higher rank symbolized by a different color belt.

Each belt rank has a minimum class requirement which is followed by a testing phase. The higher the rank, the more classes (hours) required before the testing phase due to the complexity of the curriculum and the increased proficiency expectations. There are 4 stripes that mark the progress in terms of classes attended for each belt rank. Once you earn your 4th stripe, you will enter the testing phase and your instructor will begin evaluating your skills during classes, according to the requirements of your next belt rank. Your instructor will notify you if there are any areas which need to be improved upon before you can earn your next belt rank. Below you will find a table which shows our belt ranks, along with the corresponding experience level.

Importance of the Belt Ranking System

Engaging in Martial Arts is a combination of determination, perseverance and commitment.  Your level of achievement is referred to as your rank. The rank you have earned is indicated by the color of your belt.  The color of the belt you wear with each advancement has special meaning and signifies your experience and progression.

History & Tradition

The Story of Tiger Schulmann's

When our founder, Daniel Schulmann was just a young boy, his oldest brother was brutally bullied. This left Danny with a fearful lack of confidence and a feeling of insecurity. It was at this time his father, David Schulmann made a conscious decision that his children would never be victimized by anyone ever again.

He enrolled Danny in martial arts and it did not take long for his instructor, Shigeru Oyama, to realize he had a real prodigy on his hands. When Oyama realized Danny was born in the year of the Tiger and with the boy’s unmatched speed, strength and fearlessness, Danny would forever be referred to as “Tiger” Schulmann. At the age of twelve, Tiger achieved the high honor of black belt.

He began competing in full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown tournaments. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, his instructor informed him that Tiger would be representing the United States in the 2nd World Open Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to become the North American Full Contact Champion which he would successfully defend for a staggering six years in a row until his retirement from competition.

That same year, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts was born.

Shihan David Klein

As a small 10-year-old, Shihan David Klein was pushed around, name-called and bullied. After seeing the original Karate Kid movie, he told his parents he wanted to learn martial arts to be able to defend himself. He became a black belt at age 15 and competed throughout his teens.
Today he brings over three decades of experience to his students at our Englewood location. His adult kickboxing classes are fun, exciting, informative, and above all, an amazing full-body workout. “Most adults want to get into shape, but they don’t have the motivation,” Shihan Klein says. “I challenge them and show them they can do it. Once we succeed, it’s amazing to see how far every adult can come.” His kids’ karate classes teach the importance of self-defense and build the confidence necessary to do so. “I know what kids go through, and I know how it can affect you as a person,” he says. “I am able to share my experience and to help kids overcome whatever obstacle they are facing.”

Sensei Diarra

Sensei Diarra came to the United States in 1999 to work and create a better life. While he was getting settled here in the US a friend invited him to take a trial class at the Englewood NJ location. It was definitely challenging for Sensei as he did not speak a word of English. With the help of his friend he was able to understand enough to get through class. The language barrier was hard at times but with the guidance and patience of Shihan Klein, Sensei was determined to succeed. This wasn’t just a hobby, martial arts was becoming a way of life. He helped out in the school whenever he could as he studied and learned the English language. Training through the ranks he competed in many competitions and was part of the Tiger Schulmann’s amateur fight team. He earned his 1st degree in 2006 and then trained in the instructorship program becoming an instructor in 2008 He has a genuine love for the martial arts and teaching. He is motivating and always pulls the best out of his students. He currently holds the rank of 2nd degree black belt.

Joshu Glasser

Joshu Glasser has been training in the martial arts for over 30 years. She started this journey as a young adult and fell in love, at the first class. At the time she was in need of something to help her break free of depression, anxiety and stress. She did a trial class, and has been training ever since. She trained any chance she could and quickly moved through the ranks to earn her first degree black belt. Knowing she wanted more, she moved forward into the instructorship program under the instruction of Shihan Ron Schulmann. Teaching martial arts was where she knew she wanted to be.
She has competed in countless tournaments and truth be told if women’s MMA was where it is now back then she would have found her way into the ring. She currently holds that rank of 3rd degree black belt.
Joshu Glasser is the head instructor of Englewood, NJ 3 & 4 year old Tiger Cubs program and also runs the Adult morning program.
She has amazing technique and a love for sparring. She shares the mat with her husband Shihan David Klein and their 3 amazing kids.
“Raising a family in the martial arts means you get to kick and punch together and a family that kicks together sticks together!”

Joshu Jason Liddell

Joshu Jason starting training in our Englewood location at the age of 8. He was a shy timid kid that was extremely quiet. Through his training at Tiger Schulmann’s Joshu Liddell was able to build his confidence and self esteem, He has competed in Challenge of Champions, NAGA’s, and is currently an Amature Fighter. He earned his 1st degree black belt at the age of 15. Wanting more, he entered our Instructorship program, and earned his 2nd degree black belt and became a Joshu in 2021.

Joshu Liz Campbell

When Joshu Campbell started her martial arts journey in 2008, she found herself balancing family life with her 2 small children and teaching Health & Physical Education at a local high school. Like most adults in this position, it seemed difficult to take time for herself. She was out of shape, overweight, low on self confidence, and struggled to keep consistent and disciplined with any exercise or workout program.
In 2008, that all changed. A friend brought her to a TSMA Woman’s Safe Program and she hasn’t looked back since! She lost over 25lbs, gained self confidence, and a new family at TSMA. Over the years, she has competed in several Challenge of Champions and NAGA competitions, and earned her 1st & 2nd degree black belt. In addition to all of these accomplishments, she has over 30 years of teaching experience, teaching Health & Physical Education at a local high school.
