School Procedures

The Checking-In Procedure

Upon entering the school, you will check in with our team members behind the front desk. You will tell them your first and last name, and how many classes you will be taking.

This check-in process is crucial to track your progress. You need to ensure you are marked as “attended”  when taking a class, as your attendance contributes to your rank advancement.

If for whatever reason you are going to miss class, please text us at 929-242-9505 or  email us at [email protected].

Late to Class

Kids – If you are late, do not disturb the class that has started, stand at the entryway to the mat and the instructor will call you onto the mat

Adults- If you are late,  jump onto the mat without disturbing class and get right to work

Reschedule a Class

Due to differences in class capacity and enrollment, please contact us at [email protected] to learn how to best makeup classes.

Need To Miss a Class

Yes, you should email or text if you need to miss a class so that your instructor is notified in advance that you won’t be attending your class.

Enroll in Additional Classes

The best way to increase/decrease your training frequency is to speak directly with your instructor since they will be able to determine the optimum training schedule for your goals and experience level.

School Closings

In the event of a school closing due to weather or another emergency, we will make the announcement through email, text and social media. Please do not reach out to the school asking if we are open. You will always hear from us if we are closing

Change Your Personal Information (Name, Address, Phone, Email)

Use the following link to print out a Personal Information Update form. After completing the form, mail it to the address provided or submit it to the front desk. Please make sure to sign the form.

Freeze My Membership

You may freeze your program for reasons such as vacation, injury, illness and pregnancy.

Keep in mind the following requirements when requesting a program freeze:

  • You must request a program freeze by email to [email protected]
  • Freeze requests must be in advance of the requested freeze dates. You cannot freeze your program for a time that has already passed.
  • You have a maximum of 60 days which can be frozen during a one-year program.
  • The minimum amount of time a program can be frozen for is 1 week
  • A program freeze will extend your program’s expiration date by the amount of time you requested (60 days maximum per year). During the program freeze, you will continue to make any regularly scheduled monthly payments, however, during your program’s extension time, you will not be required to make any further monthly payments.

Cancel My Membership

In order to request cancellation of your membership, you need to speak directly with the school in which you enrolled. You may cancel your membership under the following circumstances:

  • Within 3 days of enrollment – written request by email within 3 business days of your enrollment date (no supporting documents required)
  • If you move or relocate – you must provide a copy of your new lease, deed, utility bill, or school records (in the case of custody changes); establishing that you (the student) have moved his/her residence more than 25 miles from any TSMA center
  • Medical – must attach physician’s note indicating an inability to participate for at least 6 months

**Note: Cancellation requests eligible for refunds are calculated as of the date the request is received along with all appropriate supporting documentation.

Training Code

Tiger Schulmann’s students not only learn martial art skills, they also learn about respect for themselves, other students, instructors and the school itself. Adhering to the rules below is a sign of that respect and allows all students to train and develop in a safe and clean environement.
  • Always shower before class.

  • Always wear a clean uniform and wash in hot water after each use. Never re-wear any training clothes.

  • Keep finger and toe nails trimmed.

  • Do not wear jewelry during class.

  • Put all shoes and bags in locker room or designated storage area.
  • Wash hands before and after class with antibacterial soap or hand sanitizer.
  • Do not share gear, towels, bars of soap, clothing.
  • Medicate and cover any scrapes or wounds with a secure bandage before training.
  • Wipe down or spray gear with disinfectant after each use.

Importance of the Belt Ranking System

Engaging in Martial Arts is a combination of determination, perseverance and commitment.  Your level of achievement is referred to as your rank. The rank you have earned is indicated by the color of your belt.  The color of the belt you wear with each advancement has special meaning and signifies your experience and progression.

History & Tradition

The Story of Tiger Schulmann's

When our founder, Daniel Schulmann was just a young boy, his oldest brother was brutally bullied. This left Danny with a fearful lack of confidence and a feeling of insecurity. It was at this time his father, David Schulmann made a conscious decision that his children would never be victimized by anyone ever again.

He enrolled Danny in martial arts and it did not take long for his instructor, Shigeru Oyama, to realize he had a real prodigy on his hands. When Oyama realized Danny was born in the year of the Tiger and with the boy’s unmatched speed, strength and fearlessness, Danny would forever be referred to as “Tiger” Schulmann. At the age of twelve, Tiger achieved the high honor of black belt.

He began competing in full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown tournaments. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, his instructor informed him that Tiger would be representing the United States in the 2nd World Open Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to become the North American Full Contact Champion which he would successfully defend for a staggering six years in a row until his retirement from competition.

That same year, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts was born.

Joshu Roman Zelenyy

Roman Zelenyy was captivated by martial arts at a young age. His grandfather was a professional boxer, his father practiced martial arts, and shortly after taking his first Tiger Schulmann’s classes at age 13, Zelenny knew that he wanted to become an instructor. “I fell in love with Tiger Schulmann’s and the family environment I found here,” he says. “My Sensei passed on more than martial arts knowledge. He taught us valuable life skills that I still rely on every day. Now, I aspire to help the next generation thrive just as my Sensei helped me.”

Formerly ranked #1 in the North American Grappling Association’s expert division, Joshu Zelenyy, is now a second-degree black belt with over 28 years of martial experience. As the Owner and Head Instructor at Tiger Schulmann’s Greenpoint, he is looked to as a mentor. Zelenyy teaches proven self-defense techniques tailored to his students’ age and ability. “We teach skills and moves that really work,” he says, “but we also build our students’ mental strength with the skills and confidence they need to be successful in all aspects of life.”

Zelenyy helps adults reach their health and fitness goals with kickboxing workouts that are fresh and fun. “Lifting weights and running on a treadmill are great for your health but get boring fast,” he says. “Here, our curriculum is designed to keep you engaged and motivated. We hold you accountable to your goals and make it fun to stick with it so you can reach your fitness goals and maintain them for years to come.”
