Importance of the Belt Ranking System
Engaging in Martial Arts is a combination of determination, perseverance and commitment. Your level of achievement is referred to as your rank. The rank you have earned is indicated by the color of your belt. The color of the belt you wear with each advancement has special meaning and signifies your experience and progression.
When our founder, Daniel Schulmann was just a young boy, his oldest brother was brutally bullied. This left Danny with a fearful lack of confidence and a feeling of insecurity. It was at this time his father, David Schulmann made a conscious decision that his children would never be victimized by anyone ever again.
He enrolled Danny in martial arts and it did not take long for his instructor, Shigeru Oyama, to realize he had a real prodigy on his hands. When Oyama realized Danny was born in the year of the Tiger and with the boy’s unmatched speed, strength and fearlessness, Danny would forever be referred to as “Tiger” Schulmann. At the age of twelve, Tiger achieved the high honor of black belt.
He began competing in full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown tournaments. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, his instructor informed him that Tiger would be representing the United States in the 2nd World Open Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to become the North American Full Contact Champion which he would successfully defend for a staggering six years in a row until his retirement from competition.
That same year, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts was born.
Ricardo Sanchez, Owner and Head Instructor at Tiger Schulmann’s Howard Beach and has over seven years of martial arts experience. He began his training at the age of 17 to overcome low self-esteem and build confidence. What started as a journey to learn self-defense soon evolved into a profound passion for personal growth and helping others develop their confidence.
Ricardo has competed in Tiger Schulmann’s Challenge of Champions, earning first and second-place titles in jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and MMA. He is now an amateur fighter actively competing, using each match as an opportunity to test his dedication and embrace personal development.
What Ricardo loves most about teaching is witnessing the transformation in his students as they grow and develop. He is especially passionate about working with kids, watching their confidence blossom as they master new techniques. With a background in psychology, Ricardo brings a unique perspective to his teaching, helping students overcome challenges and build resilience. He also values teaching adults, guiding them toward achieving their fitness goals and carrying themselves with confidence in all aspects of their lives.
Through martial arts, Ricardo has learned to stay calm and composed under pressure—skills he is committed to passing on to his students. He believes martial arts provide a perfect balance of mental and physical strength, positively impacting not only his life but also the lives of those he has the privilege to teach.
Aleen A. Prentice is an owner, manager, and instructor at Tiger Schulmann’s Howard Beach, bringing over 17 years of martial arts expertise. What started as a way to stay active quickly became a deep passion for martial arts. Fully immersing herself in training, she honed her skills and discovered her true calling: empowering others through teaching.
An experienced martial artist, Aleen has competed in the Challenge of Champions, and various jiu-jitsu tournaments. She has even competed in the ring. While these experiences sharpened her abilities, her greatest passion lies in teaching. She takes immense joy in seeing her students progress in skill, discipline, and confidence, and especially enjoys helping them uncover their inner strength. Teaching children is particularly meaningful for Aleen, as she values instilling discipline, respect, and essential life skills that will serve them well into adulthood.
Through her martial arts journey, Aleen has developed mental clarity and emotional balance—qualities she is dedicated to instilling in her students. Under her guidance, they learn that martial arts build both physical strength and mental resilience, empowering them to thrive and make positive changes in all areas of their lives.
