This check-in process is crucial to track your progress. You need to ensure you are marked as “attended” when taking a class, as your attendance contributes to your rank advancement.

Yes, you should email or text if you need to miss a class so that your instructor is notified in advance that you won’t be attending your class.
The best way to increase/decrease your training frequency is to speak directly with your instructor since they will be able to determine the optimum training schedule for your goals and experience level.
In the event of a school closing due to weather or another emergency, we will make the announcement through email, text and social media. Please do not reach out to the school asking if we are open. You will always hear from us if we are closing

Importance of the Belt Ranking System
Engaging in Martial Arts is a combination of determination, perseverance and commitment. Your level of achievement is referred to as your rank. The rank you have earned is indicated by the color of your belt. The color of the belt you wear with each advancement has special meaning and signifies your experience and progression.
When our founder, Daniel Schulmann was just a young boy, his oldest brother was brutally bullied. This left Danny with a fearful lack of confidence and a feeling of insecurity. It was at this time his father, David Schulmann made a conscious decision that his children would never be victimized by anyone ever again.
He enrolled Danny in martial arts and it did not take long for his instructor, Shigeru Oyama, to realize he had a real prodigy on his hands. When Oyama realized Danny was born in the year of the Tiger and with the boy’s unmatched speed, strength and fearlessness, Danny would forever be referred to as “Tiger” Schulmann. At the age of twelve, Tiger achieved the high honor of black belt.
He began competing in full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown tournaments. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, his instructor informed him that Tiger would be representing the United States in the 2nd World Open Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to become the North American Full Contact Champion which he would successfully defend for a staggering six years in a row until his retirement from competition.
That same year, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts was born.
Owner and Head Sensei Scott Zapfel began his journey in martial arts at age 24. What started as a quest for fitness turned into a life-changing career. “Once I started teaching as a black belt,” he says, “I was amazed at the feeling of helping others progress along the same path.” Today, he brings over two decades of martial arts teaching experience to his leadership at Tiger Schulmann’s Wayne, NJ.
“We bring together a great diversity of people,” says Zapfel, “but everyone in my school is like family.” That of course, includes members who keep each other motivated through Zapfel’s high-intensity kickboxing workouts. But it also includes his literal family, wife and school manager, Joshu Christine Zapfel.
Zapfel credits his “profound level of fitness and confidence” to his martial arts practice and strives to bring that same life-changing mind-body fitness to his students. “In just one year of training, one of my students lost 110 lbs. It gave her the confidence to go out there and get involved in all the activities she’d always wanted to try.” That new outlook, says Zapfel, was about more than looking good. “It’s a confidence that comes from accomplishment, and the grit, focus, and full mind-body well-being we practice every day.”
Christine has been a member of the Tiger Schulmann’s Family for over 30 years! She was the second student to ever earn the rank of Joshu. She trained directly under Shihan Ron Schulmann in one of the first locations in the Spring Valley Marketplace. She went on to manage many school locations, including Montvale, Englewood, and the 20,000-square-foot original Manhattan school. Christine spent time as the corporate program manager, bringing the Tiger Schulmann’s Program to many Fortune 500 companies and she also was instrumental in developing the WomanSafe program in which she is certified as the Organizational WomanSafe Director.
She now co-owns and manages the TSMA Wayne location with her husband and Head Instructor, Sensei Scott Zapfel. She is a certified nutritionist and a certified personal trainer, in addition to being a certified Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts Instructor. She teaches many child and adult students at the TSMA Wayne location in addition to managing and directing their programs to help them achieve their goals.
