As your skills improve, you will earn a higher rank symbolized by a different color belt.
Each belt rank has a minimum class requirement which is followed by a testing phase. The higher the rank, the more classes (hours) required before the testing phase due to the complexity of the curriculum and the increased proficiency expectations. There are 4 stripes that mark the progress in terms of classes attended for each belt rank. Once you earn your 4th stripe, you will enter the testing phase and your instructor will begin evaluating your skills during classes, according to the requirements of your next belt rank. Your instructor will notify you if there are any areas which need to be improved upon before you can earn your next belt rank. Below you will find a table which shows our belt ranks, along with the corresponding experience level.

Importance of the Belt Ranking System
Engaging in Martial Arts is a combination of determination, perseverance and commitment. Your level of achievement is referred to as your rank. The rank you have earned is indicated by the color of your belt. The color of the belt you wear with each advancement has special meaning and signifies your experience and progression.
When our founder, Daniel Schulmann was just a young boy, his oldest brother was brutally bullied. This left Danny with a fearful lack of confidence and a feeling of insecurity. It was at this time his father, David Schulmann made a conscious decision that his children would never be victimized by anyone ever again.
He enrolled Danny in martial arts and it did not take long for his instructor, Shigeru Oyama, to realize he had a real prodigy on his hands. When Oyama realized Danny was born in the year of the Tiger and with the boy’s unmatched speed, strength and fearlessness, Danny would forever be referred to as “Tiger” Schulmann. At the age of twelve, Tiger achieved the high honor of black belt.
He began competing in full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown tournaments. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, his instructor informed him that Tiger would be representing the United States in the 2nd World Open Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to become the North American Full Contact Champion which he would successfully defend for a staggering six years in a row until his retirement from competition.
That same year, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts was born.
Head Instructor Daniel Ramirez is an accomplished
Martial Artist, having competed in over 100 tournaments
including NAGA, RISE, and many others. And, when not
guiding his students on the mat, he fights professionally in MMA. For him, teaching is a higher calling. In his own words “Promoting a student to a higher belt is a better feeling than winning any championship belt.” But, Head Instructor Ramirez was not always the self-assured athlete that he is today. In fact, as a kid, he was shy, lacked confidence, and was even bullied. This is what led him to start training Martial Arts.
“Everyone needs to build enough confidence to stand up
for themselves, otherwise they won’t be able to reach their maximum potential,” says Ramirez. “Every student is unique and I love bringing out the best in them. The joy students get from learning something new and seeing them smile while also building their confidence is a very special feeling.” Ramirez notes that “the confidence students build, often translates into success on and off the mat.”
Jillian Rivera, a dedicated martial artist and passionate instructor, brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to Tiger Schulmann’s White Plains. Starting her martial arts journey at the tender age of five, Jillian has spent 20+ years honing her skills and embodying the principles of discipline, confidence, and self-defense. With years of teaching experience, she has become a beloved figure in the Tiger Schulmann community, known for her ability to inspire and empower her students. Jillian’s journey began as a response to bullying and a desire to build self-confidence.
“Accomplishing things that I never knew or thought I could – that was
a result of my training.” Jillian’s competitive spirit and achievements speak volumes about her dedication to martial arts. She holds several first-place titles in prestigious competitions such as North American Grappling Association and the Challenge of Champions and is a 2nd-degree black belt.
As an amateur fighter, she boasts an undefeated record.
Beyond her accolades, Jillian finds immense joy in teaching. She thrives on helping her students, both children and adults, realize their true
potential and break through self-imposed limitations. “I love helping
my students realize what they are truly capable of,” she shares,
emphasizing the personal satisfaction she derives from teaching.
Growing up in Yonkers, NY, Jillian balanced her martial arts training
with academic pursuits, earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Fordham
University. Her diverse background includes competing in beauty
pageants, where she proudly won the title of Miss Puerto Rico.
Jillian’s teaching philosophy is deeply personal, emphasizing the
importance of building confidence in both kids and adults. She believes, “Kids are the future and their brains are like sponges,” and takes
pride in “helping [adults] tear down their self-limiting beliefs.”
At Tiger Schulmann’s White Plains, Jillian Rivera continues to inspire
and uplift, helping her students achieve greatness both on and off the mat.
