Importance of the Belt Ranking System
Engaging in Martial Arts is a combination of determination, perseverance and commitment. Your level of achievement is referred to as your rank. The rank you have earned is indicated by the color of your belt. The color of the belt you wear with each advancement has special meaning and signifies your experience and progression.
When our founder, Daniel Schulmann was just a young boy, his oldest brother was brutally bullied. This left Danny with a fearful lack of confidence and a feeling of insecurity. It was at this time his father, David Schulmann made a conscious decision that his children would never be victimized by anyone ever again.
He enrolled Danny in martial arts and it did not take long for his instructor, Shigeru Oyama, to realize he had a real prodigy on his hands. When Oyama realized Danny was born in the year of the Tiger and with the boy’s unmatched speed, strength and fearlessness, Danny would forever be referred to as “Tiger” Schulmann. At the age of twelve, Tiger achieved the high honor of black belt.
He began competing in full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown tournaments. In 1979, at the age of seventeen, his instructor informed him that Tiger would be representing the United States in the 2nd World Open Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to become the North American Full Contact Champion which he would successfully defend for a staggering six years in a row until his retirement from competition.
That same year, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts was born.
Michael Marchand began his martial arts journey at age 22 in search of positive change in his life. He found a role model in his Sensei and quickly decided to follow in his footsteps. Today, he brings over two decades of teaching expertise to his role as Owner and Head Instructor of Tiger Schulmann’s Colmar.
All these years later, Marchand says “helping people achieve their goals and live their best life literally keeps me up at night.” A coach and mentor to kids of all ages, he says, “the younger the student, the more there is to teach them about life. Their outlook on life is so fresh and pure.” Teens, he feels, especially benefit from martial arts training. “I love having the chance to help a teenager avoid the mistakes I made,” he explains. “It’s really rewarding to help them change into the young adult they always wanted to be.”
Whether members come for kids karate or adult kickboxing, the Tiger Schulmann’s difference is its team of certified instructors. “We have the most passionate and knowledgeable instructors anywhere on the planet,” says Marchand. “Many have been training here since they were 5 years old. Now adults, they have a unique way of connecting with members. The love they have for martial arts and their students is unmatched. We’re truly one big family.”
I have been training for just about 10 years. I started training because I had been a stay at home mom for a long time and forgot to take care of myself and put myself first. I needed to find the new version of me that would make me feel strong and confident and be a great example to my 3 daughters. Learning self-defense was a huge bonus. I love teaching because I get to help others in whatever stage of self development they are in. It is exhilarating to see my students learn, grow, destress and feel great! It is a gift to have this opportunity.
I have been training since February of 2006, 16 years. I started because Sempai Mueller invited me to a buddy night. I thought it was fun. What I didn’t know is I started because I needed discipline and was able to gain self confidence through training.I compete in Life. Everyday can be a fight but when you train hard you develop the skill of controlling the chaos. I love instructing for 2 reasons. I continue to sharpen my skills and become a better fighter.
I can help people who lack direction and they can become better on and off the mat.
I started training when I was 14 because I was very overwhelmed in my life and I wanted to be stronger and have more self-discipline to manage my anxiety. Over the last 20 years, I have been able to place in a number of Challenge of Champions tournaments and have a NAGA gold medal. I have 4 children and manage a brewery, but my passion is in writing, which I do whenever I have a spare moment. I love teaching because it reminds me that even though we are all on different paths through our difficulties and goals, we continue to support each other as a growing and evolving community.
