Led by Owner and Head Sensei Jobin George, Tiger Schulmann’s Merrick provides a fun, family-oriented environment for members of all ages to build fitness, friendship, confidence, and community through martial arts and kickboxing.

Our curriculum-based approach teaches more than punch-kick karate technique. We help members develop the skills — mental toughness, focus, self-discipline — to thrive on and off the mat. It’s a 360-degree approach to mental and physical fitness that we call Finding Your Tiger. And unlike most gyms, here you’re not in it alone. “We teach safe and effective techniques that allow you to progress safely at your own pace,” says Sensei George. “Our instructors and members are one big family. Meet Our Head Instructor

Joshu Mark Reyes

Mark Reyes is a 2nd Degree Black Belt and Head Instructor at Tiger Schulmann’s Merrick with over 23 years of martial arts experience, including 13 years of teaching. He began training in Tae Kwon Do at just 4 years old, joining the Tiger Schulmann’s organization by age 8. 

 

Mark now dedicates his life to teaching both kids and adults, sharing the mental clarity, discipline, and life-changing benefits martial arts has given him. A cancer survivor and award-winning filmmaker, Mark credits his martial arts training for giving him the focus and resilience to succeed in every area of life. For him, martial arts isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of life.

George provides individualized support to his adult students as well, helping members ladder up through new martial arts techniques at their own pace. “We start you off slow, and teach you the technique so you can progress safely,” he explains. “No one is judged. It’s not a competition. But at every step, you’ll see the possibilities of what you can achieve. And it’s more than physical fitness. It’s mental well-being and peace of mind.”

Sean Hess | Manager

Sean Hess is the manager at Tiger Schulmann’s in Merrick with over 16 years of experience in disciplines including Shotokan Karate, American Kenpo, Iaido, Kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu. 

Sean recently made his debut as an amateur kickboxer and has earned multiple COC medals in competition. Driven by a lifelong desire to be a protector and role model—much like the heroes he admired growing up—he’s found purpose in helping students unlock their own strength and resilience.

Outside the school, Sean volunteers with organizations supporting adults and children with disabilities, veterans, and at-risk youth. This work has deeply influenced his teaching approach and commitment to helping students grow, both on and off the mat.

We offer beginner level classes for all age groups as well as intermediate and advanced level classes in kickboxing and jiu-jitsu.
No preparation is needed. Just wear comfortable workout clothes and show up, our instructors will handle the rest!
Yes, we offer beginner classes for adults and kids. No experience required.
We recommend a minimum of two classes per week. Many adults like to attend three or more classes per week.
We offer a variety of class times to meet individual needs. Ask about our schedule for more detail.
Most people can’t stick with the gym. 95% quit after just one month. It’s boring and there are not enough reasons to keep you consistent. With Tiger Schulmann’s, you get our 3 dimensional workout which includes total body results + learning the life skill of self-defense and on top of that, our classes are intriguing and fun! Results, fun and self-defense make it easy to stay consistent and consistency is the key to success!
Our Karate Cubs pre-school program begins at 3yr. Our children’s martial arts program begins at 5 yr. old.
For your private beginner session class, we recommend sweats and a t-shirt.
Adult classes are 45 minutes to one hour. Children, Kids and Cubs classes are 45 minutes.
Yes, we offer a 20% discount for each additional family member. In addition, we offer active law enforcement a 25% discount.
Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts differs in many ways. From the dedication and expertise of our head instructors who have a minimum of 10 years experience and are the owners of their schools, to the unique and unparalleled curriculum that we teach, to the professional and beautiful facilities we provide. Nothing else is Tiger Schulmanns.
Tiger Schulmann’s head instructors are highly trained professionals with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the martial arts, teaching authentic and effective Muay Thai Kickboxing techniques that will really work if you ever need them. Many cardio kickboxing instructors have little to no actual martial arts experience and are merely aerobic instructors.
While we estimate you will burn about 800 – 1000 calories in a class, many of our students have measured over 1200 calories burned in just one class using their own fitness bands.
You don’t need any previous experience. Just show up in some comfortable workout clothes and our professional staff and instructors will make sure you have a great workout and learn a skill that will change your life!
No, sparring and contact are not required. We offer separate classes for those who want to participate in sparring.
No, competition is not required. However, for those students interested, we do offer the opportunity to compete in different types of events, and even have a professional fight team that successfully competes at the highest levels of martial arts competition.
Yes, most of our schools offer private lessons. You can contact the individual location for more information.
