The Scary Truth About Obesity in the U.S.

Last Updated on November 29, 2015.

Obesity is a growing threat to the health and wellness of America. According to the C.D.C. 34.9% of the people in the United States are Obese, which makes it equivalent to 78 MILLION people! Obesity is a terrible disease that wreaks havoc on the body. High blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and multiple other complications can arise from being obese. Finally, however, the country is taking notice and healthy living has become an initiative from the grass roots of social media all the way to the White House.

Obesity by the Numbers

Would you believe that 1 in 6 children in America are obese? 17% of children ages 2 to 19 are not just merely overweight, but obese! Obesity for adults is considered anything above 30 on the BMI (body mass index) scale. While the BMI scale can sometimes be misleading, as body builders test high on the BMI scale, 30 is a very high number and you can visually notice the extra body mass.

The Harvard School of Public Health reported those who are merely overweight have a 31% higher risk of coronary disease and those with obesity are at 81%! It is estimated that 300,000 people die each year due to complications linked to obesity. That would be the same as a small city being wiped out completely at once. On average those with obesity pay $1,429 more in medical bills than a person of healthy weight.

How did we become an obese nation?

The answer is simple. Take a long hard look at what you eat. In America, we are a country of excess. Our foods are loaded with hidden sugars, fats, and chemicals that on first glance seem harmless and in moderation are not that harmful. However, when eaten in excess and across multiple meals or snacks they can attribute to weight gain and medical problems. The biggest culprit is evident in that Americans consume 22 to 30 teaspoons of added sugar to their food. Half of those teaspoons are coming from sugary drinks and sodas.
