Nick Gravina was five years old when he began training in Kyokushin Karate. As a youngster embracing Karate’s most assertive style he was fortunate to look up to a prodigy in the art. Tiger Schulmann was a few years older than Gravina and was busy cementing his legacy as the most talented Karate fighter the United States has ever seen.
Little did Gravina know that he would spend his entire adult life working closely with Schulmann to create the largest and most successful Karate system in the world.
Things look a little different at Gravina’s Syosset school these days. Gone are the mirrors and ballet bar that graced his first school. You won’t see bo staffs and nunchukus in a weapons rack either. Syosset students learn a significantly more effective system of self-defense these days.
Youthful Karate Passion Turns Into MMA Teaching Career
Mixed Martial Arts simply means pulling the very best techniques from the thousands throughout the martial arts world. From the hundreds of techniques in the whole Tiger Schulmann’s system, new students concentrate on only 41.
Those were chosen because they are proven to be the most effective in a bullying situation, they are both safe and easy to learn and they don’t require strength.
There is one thing that is exactly the same though, the passion with which Gravina approaches each and every class at his school. You might think that after nearly 30 years of teaching 36 classes a week his enthusiasm might wane. You would be mistaken.
Gravina still approaches each and every class with the focus and positive energy he teaches his students to take into every activity they pursue. In fact it his example of discipline that has been helping Syosset students learn what that word means.
Gravina provides a disciplined environment, defines the word and then helps each and every young student apply it to their martial arts training. This has been the foundation of Tiger Schulmann’s since Gravina’s mentor first opened a Karate school 30 years ago.
