Martial Arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices,which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self defense, competition, physical health and fitness , as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. For example you have styles such as Tae Kwon Do, Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Muay-Thai, Karate, and Judo.
Through out the years these arts have been very popular to learn. The artistic beauty and unison of all these styles created a sport we now know as MMA. Mixed Martial Arts is the combination of all these arts intertwined as one. The ability to train in a single art is efficient; its just not enough for the proper preparation to defend yourself in the society we live in today. Eastern Martial Arts such as Karate and Tae Kwon Do may be elegant and beautiful to watch but it takes years of practice to be able to successfully use it in a self defense situation. Kickboxing is less ritualized and more personalized than many Eastern martial arts, but when caught in a self defense situation, someone with six months of training in kickboxing, statistically has a better chance of defending themselves than someone with a year of training at your average karate dojo.
