TSMMA Cherry Hill Student Has Life Changing Weight Loss Transformation

By Current News No Comments

Inspirational Weight Loss and Life Changing Story

My name is Curt Mount and I am from Haddon Township, which is located right next to Cherry Hill. 10 years ago, my daughter Caitlyn wanted to do martial arts. We enrolled her into Tiger Schulmann’s MMA in Cherry Hill, and after watching her classes for a few months, I started taking classes because it looked like fun. My younger daughter, Erica, started as a 3 year old a few months after me.

We all start for our own reasons self-defense, to get in shape, flexibility, or all of the above. I started because I watched my daughter do it for a few months and it looked like fun. I weighed just shy of 250lbs and thought I was in good shape. My weight loss reached over 50 lbs the first year and got in the best shape of my life.

Haddon Township Man Uses Martial Arts to Battle MS

8 months before I got my Black Belt, I found out I have Multiple sclerosis. It was tough news to hear and it added a lot of uncertainty to my future. My Dr. Said that the first thing he tells people when they are diagnosed with MS is to have a good diet and exercise regularly. I knew then that I had to keep training even harder. Adversity is another opportunity to prove what you are made of. I had two choices when I found out my diagnosis. One-I could take the advice of some of my family and friends and get some “rest”, quit Martial Arts and start “walking or biking”-or, I could follow the path I chose-to continue with my life. My diagnosis is not a choice but dealing with it and never quitting is. That is the choice I have made.

MMA is tool used for weight loss by burning calories and having fun

Since then I have had many challenges. I got my black belt in 2006, I became a Joshu in 2009, I also got my 4th star and am currently working on my 2nd Degree. I have ups and downs make sacrifices and have faced other obstacles. The thought of not training or giving up in other areas of my life have never crossed my mind and I don’t think they ever will. I still have MS but everyone tells me that they would never know it to watch me train or work with me and if I have any say in it at all (and I do) you never will.

TSMMA has brought my family closer because we have something in common that we can talk about, do, and associate together. It has also grown our family because everyone at Tiger Schulmann’s is a family. We train hard together and I consider everyone I train with to be my friend.

From Weight Loss to Discipline, MMA Does It All

Curt helps teach kids from Haddon Township and surrounding towns

If it was not for Tiger Schulmann’s MMA, I don’t know where my life would be right now. But I do know that it would not have been as good as it is now. TSMMA has literally changed my life and I thank God that my Daughter decided to try TSMMA 10 years ago. I have chosen a positive way to deal with a bad situation. I hope that if even one of you out there has had to deal with something similar, you will not give up either. Living with MS is a challenge, but it’s a challenge that can be met. Keeping yourself well, both emotionally and physically, is the key. How and what you do for yourself, How you take control will play a big part. There is always hope.

I would also like to thank the instructors I have had over the years. They, (whether they realize it or not), inspire me to train hard by not treating me differently. Their assistance has helped inspire me to continue the path I’ve chosen. I plan on going as far as I can go with it. I’m in it for life!

Louis Gaudinot vs. Phil Harris added to UFC Fight Night 37 in London

By Competition News, Current News No Comments

A flyweight bout between Louis Gaudinot of Tiger Schulmann’s Hoboken (6-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) and Phil Harris (22-11 MMA, 1-2 UFC) is the latest addition to March’s UFC Fight Night 37 event in England.

UFC officials today announced the bout.

UFC Fight Night 37 takes place March 8 at London’s O2 Arena. The card, which streams on UFC Fight Pass, features a light-heavyweight bout between recent title challenger Alexander Gustafsson and unbeaten British standout Jimi Manuwa.

Gaudinot looks to even up his UFC record. The 29-year-old former Ring of Combat champion earned a “Fight of the Night” bonus with a submission victory over John Lineker in May 2012. The 29-year-old veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 14” looks for a more active 2014 campaign.

Harris, meanwhile, also has a lone UFC win sandwiched between losses, to Darren Uyenoyama and Lineker. Fighting in his home country for the third straight time, the 30-year-old submission specialist looks to reclaim the form that earned him an early-2013 win over Ulysses Gomez.

The latest UFC Fight Night 37 card includes:

Alexander Gustafsson vs. Jimi Manuwa
Melvin Guillard vs. Ross Pearson
Ian McCall vs. Brad Pickett
Cyrille Diabate vs. Ilir Latifi
Omari Akhmedov vs. Gunnar Nelson
Louis Gaudinot and Phil Harris
Igor Araujo vs. Danny Mitchell
Luke Barnatt vs. Mats Nilsson
Brad Scott vs. Claudio Henrique da Silva

My Weight Loss Journey Kickboxing at Tiger Schulmann’s

My Weight Loss Journey with Tiger Schulmann

During this journey I’ve learned a lot about myself. In these past 8 months I found out what I am truly capable of, how strong I really am, and to never forget that I can do anything that I put my mind to.

On March 19th I walked through Tiger Schulmann’s East Hanover’s doors not knowing what to expect, but knowing that something in my life had to change. At 30 years old I came to a point in my life where you can say I “hit rock bottom.” I weighed 226 pounds, suffered from depression, emotional eating, and self harm. I was very unhappy with a lot of areas in my life, but being overweight was the hardest issue for me to try to gain control of. It was an issue I had struggled with for many years, and lately began to spiral out of control. After seeking help from my family and therapy I was able to gain some control of the emotional areas of my life. It was then that I felt that it was time to start focusing on my physical self. That’s when I decided I should to get back to my athletic roots (my high school years) since that’s when I was the happiest, and most fit, in my life.

A friend had suggested I try kickboxing, so I googled it, and Tiger Schulmann East Hanover’s website was the first to pop up. Looking at their website, and seeing all that they had to offer, made me excited yet nervous. I’ve never done MMA in my life and I didn’t know how I would do or what to expect from the classes. However, in spite of my hesitation, I decided to give it a shot anyway.

My first trial class is a day I won’t forget for the rest of my life. It was the day that something great and empowering had awoken within me. Joshu walked me around showing me pictures on the walls of amazing fighters, gave me a small background on the school’s history, introduced me to Sensei Lopez and gave me my first ever pair of boxing gloves…I felt super special at that point! After surviving the first trial class I felt a little overwhelmed, yet full of energy and excitement! I wanted to take some time to see if it was really something I wanted to commit myself to, but deep down I already knew. Tiger Schulmann’s was where I belonged and a month later I officially started. That’s when I felt my new self come to life!

Before I started training I never thought achieving any type fitness goals were possible. However, shortly after I began training, I started to see a difference in how I felt physically and mentally.

“Focus and discipline” are words you will always hear coming out of Sensei’s mouth and that’s exactly what I needed to hear on a daily basis to be able to accomplish what I have in the short months that I’ve been with Tiger Schulmann. Before I started training I never thought achieving any type fitness goals were possible. However, shortly after I began training, I started to see a difference in how I felt physically and mentally. It felt absolutely great and I did not want it to stop. Feeling my uniform and belt get bigger and bigger, hearing all the encouraging words from everyone around me and achieving my rank of hi-white belt, was all the motivation that I needed to keep going full force. It’s then that I realized that anything is possible so long as I stay focused and have the discipline to come to training. I also had the help and encouragement from the other students I train with, and as a whole I really feel that none of my accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without my family, Sensei, Joshu and all the other wonderful strong people I’ve met at the school. To this day I have placed in two challenges, and lost a total of 63 pounds (and counting!). I have been off my medication, and have not relapsed to my old eating habits or cutting in 246 days, feats would be absolutely impossible not too long ago.

During this journey I’ve learned a lot about myself. In these past 8 months I found out what I am truly capable of, how strong I really am, and to never forget that I can do anything that I put my mind to. I truly thank Tiger Schulmann for giving me the physical skills I needed to get myself back into shape, the mental skills of learning how to not give up, how to stay positive and focused on any goal that I set for myself in life, and providing a fun and healthy environment to practice these skills. Whether its short term, long term or on or off the mat, I know I can and will accomplish it; TSMMA has truly changed my life for the better.

Hoboken Martial Arts Flyweight Teaches Self-Defense to ‘Change People’s Lives’

By Current News No Comments

14027870-mmmainBy Cory Braiterman – THE JERSEY JOURNAL

At 5-foot-3, Louis Gaudinot hardly stands head and shoulders above anyone in the world of mixed martial arts. However, Gaudinot does stand out as one of the very best in his sport, ranked No. 10 in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) 125-pound flyweight class.

Gaudinot, who’s been a martial artist since the age of 6 with the Tiger Schulmann schools, is currently the head instructor at the Hoboken location on Washington Street. An instructor for the past eight years, Gaudinot loves when people asked him what he does for a living.

“I change people’s lives,” he tells them.

“To get a kid to come in here who’s 6 years old, who’s shy, getting bullied, has no confidence and to teach him how to defend himself, how to stand up to bullies and to be more outgoing — the parents come up to me and tell me, ‘You really did change my child’s life,’” Gaudinot said recently.

“And it isn’t just that: you get an adult who comes here and he loses 50, 60 pounds and adds years onto his life. You teach a woman some self-defense and she has more confidence walking down the street, taking the train, knowing she’s a bit safer.”

For those who still think of MMA as the no-holds-barred combat of decades past, Gaudinot points to the rules of the sport that are put in place by the same state athletic commissions that regulate boxing.

“I do not look at it as ‘no-holds-barred’ fighting because there are rules put in place for the safety of the fighter,” Gaudinot said.

It’s been a long journey for the 29-year-old Yonkers, N.Y., native. While the four-stripe black belt received his first at the age of 8 in the old karate system of Tiger Schulmann’s, he started competing as an MMA pro in 2009. He has starred on the reality TV series “The Ultimate Fighter” and has run his record to 6-3, which includes a loss at a higher weight class.

For those unfamiliar with the sport — which is one of the fastest growing in the world — think of it as a combination of boxing, wrestling and Muay Thai. It is a free-flowing combat sport that takes place on both the feet and the ground, in which fights can be stopped by knockout, technical knockout via referee intervention, submission or doctor’s intervention due to a particularly unlucky cut or accumulated damage.

Fights are usually contested with three five-minute rounds with championship fights spanning five rounds. Should the fight not end before the time limit is reached, judges score the bout using the same “10-point must” system that boxing is scored with.

While Gaudinot knows there are still misconceptions about the sport, he feels a closer look into the world of MMA would go a long way in changing those assumptions.

“Some people still feel that it takes no skill whatsoever to be a pro MMA fighter,” Gaudinot said. “But once someone trains or sees what skillset a martial artist has to learn, they quickly change their perception.”

With Health Problems Mounting, Tim Turns to Tiger Schulmann’s and Loses 135lbs Kickboxing

Cherry Hill Student Has Life Saving Weight Loss and Transformation Through Training

My name is Tim. In 2003, I made the best decision of my life. I joined Tiger Schulmann’s MMA Cherry Hill. I got the honor of training under Sensei McFeely and Sensei Campbell. Through this four year journey I soared to great heights. First I had lost 100 pounds. I achieved 2 wins at COC (2nd place in Kickboxing and 3rd in Grappling). I also earned my High Brown belt.

My training was cut short on Feb. 5, 2007 as I was hit by a 40ft construction wall. I suffered major nerve damage and 3 herniated discs. I was unable to train. Life had thrown me a huge curve ball.

When my personal life didn’t work, I put my goals into my work. With not being able to train, I accepted a manager’s position in Princeton, NJ and had great success. I was the #1 store in NJ. I was at the top, but it came with a price. I had put my work in front of me and my eating habits were really bad. Fast food and Mountain Dew Amp were my two main sources of food. Then one day I could not run up the stairs at work, I was so out of breath. My cholesterol and blood pressure were sky high. The doctors said I got to do something for weight loss and healthier lifestyle or I was heading for some real problems.

Health Problems Lead to Return to Cherry Hill

So I decided to give up my management position and decided to come home. I wanted to come back to TSMMA Cherry Hill and give it one more shot. When I came back 2 ½ years ago, I was 365 pounds, size 46 waist. I agreed to give up my belt until I earned it back with goals set by Joshu Baker.

Our 1st 60-Day Weight Loss Challenge I lost over 30 pounds and said I can do this.

Little by little achieving small goals, I started to lose some weight. I just wanted to be under 300 pounds. Then we had our 1st 60-Day Weight Loss Challenge. That challenge I lost over 30 pounds and said I can do this. I kept chipping away at this goal. I had major support from all my cherry hill family and Joshu Baker. Then on night I was listening to Joshu at the end of class. He was talking about nouns (people, places and things). He was telling us to push all negative nouns and energy away in our life and that I did.

I started coming after work in afternoon and hitting the bag and also coming at night to classes. Everything started to fall into place. I take care of me! I achieved my weight goal, lost 135 pounds, and earned my High Brown belt back. I also got my smile back and am enjoying life. My confidence was back, I am a totally different person.

I take care of me! I achieved my weight goal, lost 135 pounds, and earned my High Brown belt back.

Better Health and Weight Loss Leads to Confidence and Happiness

During these 2 ½ years, I was thrown many curve balls. I had lost all my belongings two times from a flood. I also lost something of 19 years that I helped build. When all this happened, Joshu said the one thing that helped; he was sorry for what happened to me, but he would love to have me at TSMMA more and for this to help him through. That was something I needed.

All the obstacles we face in life are not define us as a person, but Joshu is always there to help us through and be there until we come back around. Joshu Baker is a true teacher. He has desire and passion to teach us. He love us even when we’re going through hell. I am so glad I came back. Major thanks to Joshu Baker and all of TSMMA Cherry Hill. If you ask if I would do it all again, the sleepless nights, the many hours of training… a heartbeat!
