Adult Kickboxing At Any Age

By TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

DIANE LYNCH never expected to pursue adult kickboxing classes. Now at the age of 64, she has only been training with Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (TSMMA) of Vails Gate for a year. Diane celebrated her first anniversary with TSMMA on Mother’s Day. She originally signed on by invitation from her daughter. “I enjoyed her excitement with adult kickboxing classes but never imagined myself in this coterie. Neither did the young men in class. They were courteous, but their smiles gave away their thoughts. ‘We’ll see how long this one lasts!’ Sensei was so very gracious. At a time when I doubted my own capabilities and effectiveness, his gift of motivation and acceptance strengthened my heart.”

“After the first adult kickboxing class with Sensei, I was struck dumb with how much I couldn’t do. I remember questioning, ‘What part of me is strong?’ Sensei answered, ‘You have heart.'”

In the past, Diane had tried different venues such as Curves, and took two different Zumba classes. “It took me six months to find the hinge in my hips. I explained to the instructors that being born in 1950’s, I bridged two different worlds…what was and what wastobe. In the 1960’s women were still being “finished” with classes by Barbizon, to polish their gait in spiked heels. We would learn how to glide on our toes, sit or stand with great control, not plop and NEVER EVER JIGGLE ANYTHING.  My mother would have been horrified if she saw me in those Zumba classes. They were great.” Although Diane enjoyed the vibrant, social atmosphere of the dance classes, she expanded her curiosity and delved into other avenues. “When I first came to Tiger Schulmann’s, I thought of myself as healthy and active. So after the first adult kickboxing class with Sensei, I was struck dumb with how much I couldn’t do. I remember questioning, ‘What part of me is strong?’ Sensei answered, ‘You have heart.'”

Sensei’s answer resonates to this day, as Diane has reflected on many courageous things she has attempted. Things that seemed unconventional, though now they are accepted and even expected in today’s society. Diane went back to school when her kids were older to extend her teaching certification in science. She ran for the Board of Education and won, secured a fellowship to study in China, and most recently, after teaching Literature and Language Arts for 23 years, Diane refashioned her career to teach 7th, 8th & 9th grade Math.  Diane states “Not bad for a late bloomer…the first time I left home for a week long seminar I was 43. So I knew could do adult kickboxing classes!”

“’Kickboxing isn’t ladylike’……But it is a road to a healthier future”

Diane recalls an instance during kickboxing class when Sensei instructed her to widen her stance. “I told him it wasn’t ladylike. Without skipping a beat, he retorted, ‘kickboxing isn’t ladylike.’ I Guess not. But it is a road to a healthier future.”  Diane continues to improve her strength and endurance during each kickboxing class and embraces Sensei’s coaching in perspective and life skills as a counterbalance to decades of programming and approach to living. “I look forward to every kickboxing class and leave better than I came.”

Diane has become a familiar face at TSMMA Vails Gate and enjoys the camaraderie and family oriented atmosphere of the school. She has truly become an inspiration to a number of her peers and exemplifies what it means to seize each day and use your potential to its fullest. “Truly there are glass ceilings in every one’s life. Many times it is a barrier of our own making, a mirror instead of glass. We can look up and sigh with resignation or we can actively work to change limitation to potential and potential into capacity.  Who knows, the punch we throw may be all it takes.”

Martial Arts Classes Help Young Students Excel

By TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

The proof is in the pudding. If you are going to look for martial arts classes for your kids, you want to see what they will look like after a few months training. Even better if you can get a glimpse of what the results might be like a few years later.

It’s the same reason kids looking to go to college look at Harvard. The results speak for themselves. Simply look at the successful graduates (or Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg who didn’t even graduate) and you know you are going to be in the right place.

Well if you are looking for martial arts classes in Newburgh you might just want to check out Tiger Schulmann’s. The school is newly opened a quick trip down the road in New Windsor. You will pass a few martial arts classes on the way, but you will do it happily once you see the level of students Sensei Jose Montes is continually turning out.

Whether your child is a natural athlete or if athletics has never been their thing, Montes will teach them the fundamentals of martial arts and help them know exactly how to defend themselves.

The process he uses for teaching Mixed Martial Arts to his students helps build self-discipline. By concentrating on lessons of focus, perseverance and positive attitude, Montes does not simply help your child get physically stronger, but mentally as well.

Martial Arts Classes Improve Confidence For Vails Gate Students

Whether your child is the most talented or least is totally irrelevant to their overall success. It is self-discipline that will ultimately separate them from the pack. Academics, sports, the arts, social interaction, all these areas will benefit from your childs training.

Combination of disicpline and effective self-defense makes for perfect martial arts classes.

The Art of Imitation: Discipline and Focus Through Kickboxing

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that’s the case, then the instructors of the Tiger Schulmann’s  MMA of Vails Gate should be delighted that their students emulate their every move. The very precise and calculated techniques that each student learns during kickboxing classes are consistent throughout the organization. Students learn self defense with the proper body mechanics and presentation to ensure efficiency, safety and competence with every move. Sensei- Jose Montes and Joshu Shane Burgos are among the elite instructors in this establishment who take pride in their students achievements as they continue to grow as martial artists.

Both men have gained both the respect and admiration of their students in both the kids and adult kickboxing classes. But the children’s kickboxing classes are where you can see wonder and amazement ensue. As each child stands at attention, their eyes and ears remain focused on the swiftness of each strike and the sounds of the heavybags when a demonstration commences from either instructor. The pounding of a glove meeting the bag, the slap of a round kick, and each brisk exhalation during  a combination are just a few of the significant noises you can hear when you enter the school to witness a kickboxing class. Naturally, children want to reproduce the quick, seamless appearance of each combo and aim to attack the bags as hard as they can at first.  But as  they progress as martial artists, both instructors teach the kids that power does not come from strength, but from precision and control. This message appears to translate into everyday life and activities that become the hallmark of a successful child. Many parents have attributed improved behaviors at home, school and during play to the structured methods taught during kickboxing classes within the walls of TSMMA.

Sensei and Joshu have been an integral part of helping several children grow and flourish both on and off the mat. To a child, these men are a symbol of strength, power and invincibility that provides an initial spark of fascination, that in time, eventually develops into respect, compliance and dedication. These qualities are among several reputable traits that any parent would be happy to have their child imitate.

Confidence, the essential tool for kids’ success!

By TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

As the time approaches for kids to return to school, parents want to make sure that they are prepared for anything that comes their way.  They will need their supplies of course, their loose leaf paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, scissors, crayons/colored markers and various other supplies. In addition to their school supplies, there is of course their back to school wardrobe where some kids can’t go back with last years “fashion” trends because that just wouldn’t be cool.

End of class discussion about self discipline and confidence

End of class discussion about the elements of building confidence.

However, there are other tools that need to be taken into consideration. For example, how will they perform? How are their concentration skills,  attention span, focus, and self-discipline? These are the tools that are essential for success in school.  The question is, what can we do to help? At Tiger Schulmann’s MMA, that is exactly what our specialty is! We’ve been helping kids for over 30 years improve in all areas of their lives. In school, sports and the arts! Our unique formula helps build a child’s confidence by building on the cornerstones of success, self-discipline and self-defense. To put it simply, we teach them never to quit! If they don’t quit, success is guaranteed!
