Why kids should learn Jiu Jitsu

Our Kids & Teens Jiu‑Jitsu program helps children build confidence, focus, and self‑discipline through structured technique training in a supportive, fun environment. And beyond physical fitness — strength, flexibility, coordination — they also learn practical self‑defense skills and a “no‑quit” mindset they can carry into everyday life.

FAQ

Our Jiu-Jitsu curriculum blends Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) fundamentals with real-world self-defense applications. You’ll learn how to control and escape from common ground situations — not just for sport, but for everyday safety and confidence.

Children as young as age 5 can begin (in our Little Tigers class), then ages 8-12 (Tigers) and 13-17 (Teen Tigers). We structure classes by age and ability so each child trains with peers in a safe and engaging environment.

No experience is required. Whether your child is athletic or just getting started, we teach fundamentals first—balance, awareness, coordination—and build from there. The focus is on technique and skill, not raw strength or size.

We recommend a minimum of two classes per week. Many adults like to attend three or more classes per week.

We offer a variety of class times to meet individual needs. Ask about our schedule for more detail.

Beyond self-defense, your child will gain skills like escaping from holds, ground control, awareness, and non-violent conflict resolution. They’ll also improve coordination, flexibility, and confidence.

Children will wear comfortable athletic clothing from Tiger Schulmann’s—leggings and a T-shirt. Since we emphasize no-gi training (no traditional uniforms), this setup allows freedom of movement and safety.

While many kids’ programs focus on striking or kids games, our Jiu-Jitsu training uses leverage and technique so that smaller or younger students can defend themselves effectively. It’s real-world self-defense, not just drills or sport.

As children learn new techniques, earn recognition (belt levels or stripes), and train safely with peers, they build mental toughness, self-control, and respect for others. The “no-quit” attitude is part of the culture.

Adult classes are 45 minutes to one hour. Children, Kids and Cubs classes are 45 minutes.

The primary goal is self-defense, discipline and personal growth—but for those interested, there are optional events. However, competition is never required. The class environment remains supportive and non-intimidating.

No. Beginners focus on technique and controlled partner drills before live rolling is introduced. Once you’ve developed a solid foundation, you’ll have the option to spar under supervision — never before you’re ready.
