Karate Kids use Bully Shield to stop Bullies

By TSMMA Mount Kisco No Comments

On Saturday October 18th we at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA will be hosting our FREE “Bully Shield” seminar. This is an education for kids and parents alike teaching them the right way to handle the bullying epidemic that has been devastating our country. We hope to empower all with the tools and strength to stand up to bullies and say “No!!!!”

Bully Shield Seminar in Mount Kisco New York to teack kids the proper way to stop bullying

Tiger Schulmann’s Mount Kisco will be hosting our “Bully Shield Seminar” to teach kids the proper way to stop bullying.

Bullies have been torturing kids for far to long. There are thousands of good kids that fear going to school more than they fear the boogie man. I don’t want to even get into the drastic steps so many have taken in the mere hopes of ending the abuse they have had to endure at the hands of bullies. It is so frustrating to me because I feel this is a very easy problem to solve. When bullies try to do their bullying thing, the victim, or hopefully intended victim needs to stand up to these bullies and say loud and clear “No! Not me.”

“Martial arts provides our kids the tools they need to stand up to bullies. Self Defense and Self Confidence. With these tools they take the power away from bullies and empower themselves.”

It is easy for someone like me to say that the victims need to be the ones to stop bullies. I have been bullied in the past and was forced to defend myself. Since that time I’ve been training Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu and MMA on a daily basis. This has been going on for over 25 years. In that time I’ve been knocked down and thrown around by world class fighters like UFC Superstars Louis “Goodnight” Gaudinot and Nick “Pretty Boy” Pace. I’ve experienced the things that the victims of bullies are so very afraid and come to learn that it’s not that bad. When someone trains in the martial arts they learn that sometimes you have to take a few shots. The more it happens the less scary it becomes. Most fights in school last less then 10 seconds. Now as you read this please take 10 seconds and count out loud. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Ok good. Not that long is it. Training allows kids to face that fear, conquer that fear and turn that fear against these bullies. Standing up and showing a bully you are not afraid of a fight stops the bullying almost every time.

I am a parent of an amazing 9 year old boy named LJ. He is such a good kid with nothing but good intentions towards all. He just wants to have fun all day with whoever is around. I can’t imagine him ever even thinking of join bullies as they try to torment other kids. With all that being said I know that there will be some kids that will view his kindness as a weakness. If I allowed him to go into an environment where the mere possibility of bullies trying to harass or harm him without a basic knowledge of how to defend himself I’d not be doing my job as his father. As parents we are responsible for our childrens safety. When we are not there with them we can not depend on schools to keep them safe. The policies in place now are more concerned with liability than responsibility. We must give our kids the necessary tools to protect themselves. These tools are Self Defense and Self Confidence and both are gained through martial arts training.

LJ used martial arts to leearn how to stand up to bullies

LJ is one of the sweetest, kindest kids you will ever meet. Some bullies would mistake this kindness for weakness. His martial arts training has given the tools he needs to stand up to those bullies and say “No! Not me.”

Without the proper tools our kids are vulnerable. The bullies have all the power and are anxious to use it. Give that power back to your kids. Take it from the bullies and give it to those who need it more. My seminar is free and effective. It teaches kids the right way to stop the bullies from bullying without having to resort to violence. We empower them with the best weapon possibly, knowledge. Knowledge that allows them to over come the fear of the situation and provide them the courage to do what is right.

Any Effective Physical Conditioning Program Must Include…

By TSMMA Wayne No Comments

How to get in Shape:

Physical Conditioning Part 1

Any effective physical conditioning program has three parts; muscular development, cardiovascular exercise, and flexibility.  A complete workout will not only allow you to create that overall feeling of fitness, but also help you stay healthy and injury free. Strength and flexibility work together to keep your joints in line, give you increased balance and agility, and improve your overall range of motion with less chance of pulling or straining a muscle.  And as everyone knows cardiovascular conditioning will increase your stamina and energy for those hikes, bike rides, pick-up games, and general running around chasing after the kids.  So unless your workout regularly hits all three aspects of physical conditioning, it is incomplete!

Physical Conditioning must include muscular development

Resistance training of working on the heavy bag leads to incredible strength gains

Starting with muscular development, the only way to actually make your muscles stronger is through resistance to your movements.  Most people think of this as weight lifting, body weight exercises, or resistance band training, creating some form of resistance for your muscles as they go through their range of motion. These are all typical activities you will see in a gym or with a personal trainer.  More and more people are now moving away from the gym scene to martial arts training for the excitement and amazing results towards your physical conditioning.

Physical conditioning can be done through simple body weight exercise

Simple yet effective way to build strength

Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts provides resistance in the form of heavy bags, training pads, and body weight exercises. No weights, No machines, just great martial arts training!  Every punch and kick met with the resistance of the pads or bags works on strengthening the arms, core and legs.  Body weight exercises are also part of every class and in addition to strength building also improve cardio.  Two of three essential elements of complete physical conditioning.

Physical conditioning can be accomplished with the most basic body weight exercises

Hit those abs every day!!!!

Every strength building exercise, if done correctly, with intensity and proper form will create the “burn.”  This feeling of muscular engagement and fatigue is essential to building strength and endurance.  Don’t stop exercising when you feel this burn, but keep working through it, this is what your muscles need to get to the next level.  This is where the phrase “No Pain, No Gain,” comes from, but be cautious; too much pain and you can overwork the muscles.  Pain can be a stronger word than what you want to look for maybe more of a slight discomfort…

After every workout, to make sure all your work has the potential to payoff, you need to refuel your body with the appropriate nutrition.  After a hard workout, your muscles need protein.  You didn’t get any stronger during the actual workout you just went through, but will achieve the muscular gain during the recovery phase, where you muscles will repair themselves and get stronger, leaner and more tone.  So make sure within a half hour after your workout you get a substantial serving of protein into your system. See our Nutritional Guidelines sheet for information on sources and serving sizes for protein.  Do not underestimate the importance of nutrition as far as your physical conditioning goes.

…….To be continued

By TSMMA Wayne No Comments

Put an end to Bullying for Your Child

Coming Soon!  Bully Shield!  Saturday, October 18, 2014 Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts in Wayne, dozens of kids and their friends and families will attend Bully Shield.  This seminar is gear towards showing kids what may happen during confrontations with bullies, verbal and physical and the right ways to handle different situations.  Students and instructors role play and act out many different scenarios, many with humorous results, but all with a serious message…

“Bullies are out there, but with confidence and knowledge on handling them, no one will ever bully you.”

Put an end to bullying

Kids learning the non-physical way to end bullying

It is really kind of sad, that so much effort, time and resources have been wasted on trying to legislate bullying out of existence.  Many of these programs have already been labeled failures by the school systems themselves.  Even our state government has legislated what has been called the toughest anti- bully laws in the country.  Unfortunately, what ultimately happens is bullying still goes on and in many instances; good kids who aren’t bullies somehow get caught in the bureaucratic red tape and get labeled as bullies themselves!

no more bullies

Putting an end to Bullying

The solution is simple; just ask any of the thousands of kids who have overcome bullying issues through martial arts training…CONFIDENCE.

Parents, counselors and teachers all suggest to kids to use their confidence and stand up for themselves, but the problem is, what if a kid doesn’t have any confidence?  How do they get it?  Where does it come from?  One place for sure…Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts.

Bully Shield is part of every single class at Tiger Schulmann’s.  Get your child the confidence they need!

Please Call 973-988-1207 to reserve your spot at this annual can’t miss seminar event to put an end to bullying in your child’s life, or to make sure it never starts!

Progression is the Key to Success in the Martial Arts World

By TSMMA Elmwood Park No Comments

Whether you are looking to work out your basic gym or you decide to venture into a dojo of some kind for your workout there is one key element which keeps people consistent. Everybody has different schedules and different goals when they decide to start a fitness regiment, and each school has a different method of instruction, if any at all. Most martial arts schools are known for instilling discipline and strict instruction, to attempt to gain maximum efforts from the students. The important element which makes all students in martial arts schools looking to continue striving for the next goal is PROGRESSION.

It is very simple; if somebody is not progressing they will have no interest in continuing their workout routine. Whether their bench press is not getting stronger or their not understanding how to throw a proper jab, the key to ongoing training is progression. Of course there are many other factors when somebody decides to pursue a fitness dream such as lack of finances or certain health ailments, but once somebody has crossed the starting line to reaching his/her fitness goal, progression is the only thing keeping them going. In the martial arts world, this can get very tricky. Some schools of certain martial arts disciplines (*cough* tae-kwon do *cough*) are notorious for handing out promotions solely based on time training, and not progression. If somebody shows up to a kickboxing class every day but never progresses he/she does not deserve a promotion. Most of these instances are based on business, and when a new belt is achieved there is a convenient belt fee attached to it. If these people at these schools were never receiving belts, perhaps their lack of progression would ultimately be realized.

This previously stated idea does not mean that everybody who trains at a martial arts school needs to be a championship caliber fighter, every person is different and unique goals are set for every student. A gym like Tiger Schulmann’s MMA in Elmwood Park is a perfect example of a school that values progression. Promotion is dependent on two factors, attendance and progression. If somebody shows up to class under Sensei David Tirelli every week but clearly does not show the effort needed to improve and reach his/her goals, the promotion will never be achieved. Every belt has a set number of stripes awarded based on attendance, which helps keep the student conscious of how far promotion is and what he/she needs to do to achieve it. As the belt level rises, so do the expectations. Sensei Tirelli currently has a high red belt (third highest color), for nearly six months, due to the fact that this particular young man is not ready to be promoted to the next level. He has come a long way, but ultimately it would not be fair to him and to others if he was awarded a very high level belt prematurely. The most important moral of this story is that this particular young man understands why he needs to work harder and continue. He understands that at Tiger Schulmann’s no students are entitled to promotion, and instead their progression is the difference maker.

Karate Kids Use More Than Their Thumbs!

By TSMMA East Brunswick No Comments

 karate kids

When I was a child, all the kids in the neighborhood would be outside playing ball everyday after finishing their homework. There was no mention of childhood obesity and everyone knew the one kid with an inhaler in their class at school. Today things are much different. Playgrounds are empty as soon as the school day ends and the couches are full of children exercising their thumbs while playing video games. It also seems like 1 out of every 8 kids has some type of asthma or other health issues. The federal government is also butting it’s ugly head into the business of what we feed our children in school because of the increased incidence of obesity in children.

Use Karate to Get them off their Butts!

Karate Kids Build Their Confidence

Karate kids do not spend time sitting on the couch, instead they exercise using their entire body. Not only do they have strong muscles, their heart and lungs are in great shape as well. Karate classes are a great way to combat childhood obesity and it is a lot of fun at the same time. Karate kids in our classes work on balance and coordination as well as strength. This gives them a great foundation for sports they participate in seasonally. Since Tiger Schulmann’s karate classes are an indoor activity, in a climate controlled environment, it is also better than other activities for children with asthma and other breathing problems. Our program leads to healthier and active children.

The core of the Tiger Schulmann’s program in East Brunswick is a non-quitting spirit. Tiger Schulmann’s karate kids are taught to stay strong mentally and never give up no matter how tough the challenge. Our students will accept nothing less than success. All of our karate kids excel in school, sports, the arts or anything else they try.

The Benefits of Martial Arts

By TSMMA East Brunswick No Comments

Benefits of Martial Arts

If you are looking for a great way to improve your health in East Brunswick, NJ look no further than Tiger Schulmann. One of the great benefits of martial arts is that it is an exercise program you can stick with. Everyone knows the importance of exercise and proper nutrition so why is the United States the most overweight country on the planet? I know thousands of people right here in East Brunswick that have gym memberships but 99% of them “never” go to the gym.

Take the Confusion Out of Working Out with Martial Arts

Adult martial arts classes are exciting

The gym can be a confusing place if you don’t know what you’re doing. You can hire a personal trainer for $50 + an hour but that can become extremely expensive. At our martial arts gym there is an instructor coaching you in every class that will see to it that you reach your fitness goals and stay motivated. The gym can also be a pretty boring place. The membership fee is basically equipment rental. If you do show up, you are renting a treadmill for your workout. Have you ever tried to stay consistent doing this type of exercise? Even fewer than the remaining 1% of gym attendees can. Another great benefit of martial arts is its ability to be a fun workout. At Tiger Schulmann’s in East Brunswick, the workout is so much fun that it’s easy to stay motivated and get yourself in great shape and stay in great shape.

Martial Arts Relieves Stress!

Another great benefit of martial arts is that it can serves as a type of stress relief. Here at Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts,  the classes are so engaging that there is little to no time to think about anything else. It’s like a one hour vacation away from your daily obligations every time you go.

You only only get one body in life so it is important that we take the best care of it that we can. Everyone needs an exercise program that will build lean muscle as well as keep your heart and lungs working efficiently. An effective workout regime will also include flexibility training to keep you youthful and athletic. To do all this in a gym would take multiple hours. Our martial arts classes are each an hour long and cover all these areas.

You need a workout that is motivating, easy to stick to, effective in all aspects of physical conditioning and will relieve stress at the same time. At Tiger Schulmann’s in East Brunswick you will experience all the great benefits of martial arts and it only requires a few hours a week.

Vails Gate Students Inspired By Kickboxing

By TSMMA Vails Gate No Comments

There are several exercise routines available to the public and many people take advantage of the propaganda that they see on infomercials and via social media. Although few individuals may achieve results, a majority of people end up quitting after a while due to a plateau in their exercise program because they are no longer progressing, they lack motivation or there is a weakness in the information available beyond that exercise program. At Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (TSMMA) of Vails Gate, students achieve results because it encompasses the total package of what a personal trainer, nutritionist, and motivational life coach would provide.

Studenst sharpen their skills during kickboxing class under instruction from Sensei Jose Montes

If you have had the pleasure of training with Sensei Jose Montes, then you are familiar with the inspirational and insightful speeches he delivers after his kickboxing classes. One of my favorites is his descriptive directions on how a samurai sword is made. An actual samurai sword is brought onto the mat and used as a prop to display the beauty of its appeal. “The steel is put through alternating temperatures of extreme heat and cold, and repeatedly beaten and folded into layers to mold the steel into the desired shape and design. The entire process is lengthy and arduous due to the constant repetitive nature of forging the steel.”  At first, one would imagine that Sensei Montes is simply showing off his handling skills of the magnificent weapon. But then he pauses for a moment and explains the significance of the artistry and journey that a simple block of steel must endure to become something so majestic and powerful.

Sensei Montes captivates the students in his kickboxing classes by explaining how we become stronger, sharpened human beings with a commanding presence such as that of a treasured samurai sword.

“We represent the block of steel,” says Montes. “It is the constant beating, extreme pressure and varying temperatures that represent our everyday struggles.” Sensei Montes captivates the students in his kickboxing classes by explaining how we become stronger, sharpened human beings with a commanding presence such as that of a treasured samurai sword. It is achieved by overcoming frequent adversity and allowing ourselves to work through life’s struggles to become profound, accomplished individuals.

Sensei Montes provides a variety of inspirational and insightful speeches to motivate his students during kickboxing class

At Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts of Vails Gate, the students achieve results through an intense cardio exercise routine, nutritional guidance and personable training from an expert instructor. In addition, the motivation that Sensei Jose Montes provides in his kickboxing classes is an extra perk that is not available with other exercise programs. The kickboxing classes itself are enough to do the job and help shed pounds and tone up, but when an extra push is needed on those days when life takes its toll, Sensei Montes is available to his students to offer information, encouragement and guidance towards achieving and maintaining excellence.

Eight Tips for Easy Weight Loss

By TSMMA Wayne No Comments

8 Tips for Weight Loss

Here are a few simple rules to follow that will help you to get the best results from your nutritional program!

1. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, do not skip it! Breakfast should actually be the biggest meal of the day because it gives your metabolism a kick start and will give you the energy to get through the first part of your day. This is essential for weight loss

2. Eat small balanced meals that consist of equal portions protein and carbohydrates. Examples of protein are chicken, turkey, fish or lean red meat. Good carbohydrates are vegetables, a small baked or sweet potato, brown or white rice.

Weight loss can be accomplished with the most basic body weight exercises

Hit those abs every day!!!!

3. Make sure you eat every 3 hours, so if you eat breakfast at 8:00am then your next meal should be at 11:00am, then 2:00pm and so on.  A high metabolism is essential for weight loss, every time you eat a small meal you kickstart your metabolism.

4. Use a meal replacement or a protein shake bar when you can’t get all of your meals in and find this schedule difficult to keep.

5. Water should be your primary beverage of choice. Adults should drink at least 64 oz per day, more on days you are planning a workout. Water is a natural diuretic and helps in the weight loss process. Lemon or lime can be added to give flavor.  Avoid the “sports” drinks and “all natural” iced and green teas.  They are not as healthy as their marketing would indicate.

Weight Loss must include cardio training

Resistance training of working on the heavy bag leads to incredible strength gains

6. Smaller meals are better than larger meals. If you eat out a lot, try splitting what you get into two portions. For example if you get turkey sandwich or sub from a deli, eat half now and half in 3 hours. Some nutritionally conscious people even get a to go container as soon they get their meal.  Portion sizes are so huge these days that you only need half of they give you at a restaurant.  This will do wonders for your weight loss.

7. Avoid things that don’t need to be added to your meals, especially those high in fat or sugar like cheese, mayo, soda, juice and sports drinks.  Cutting out high sugar drinks and snacks will eliminate pounds of sugar on a yearly basis and do amazing things for your weight loss goals.

8. If you get hungry between your meals, try a healthy snack to keep your cravings down like veggie sticks, fruit slices or almonds. A good filler is salad and can be eaten as much as desired, just use salad dressings that are low in fat and sodium and use them sparingly.

Weight Loss can be accomplished through simple body weight exercise

Simple yet effective way to build strength

The hardest part of any change in your eating habits are always the first few days, expect them to be the toughest and it will get easier as your body adjusts to this new schedule and will quickly give you the results you are looking for!

It is also good to take 1 cheat meal each week where you can indulge and have anything you want. This is good because it lets your body know that it is still going to continue to get the fats it needs and to continue to burn fat at a high rate. It also helps you mentally because you have something to look forward to each week!

Along with proper nutrition you also should exercise at least 3-5 hours per week. If you are having trouble finding a workout you enjoy then you should try a kick boxing class as a fun, safe and effective way to workout.

Kickboxing and Imagination – The Best Stress Relief

Kickboxing and Imagination – The Best Stress Relief

Tiger Schulmann Kickboxing for stress relief

Think back to when you were a kid — when you had limitless energy, an active imagination, and the infinite potential of a lifetime in front of you. Now think about your kickboxing workout and your health. What would the younger version of you think about the way you take care of yourself? Would that kid be impressed with his or her future? Or would they be disappointed, like “getting clothes for Christmas” disappointed? There’s still time to change your attitude towards fitness and your health and make your adult life something you to be proud of!

When you were younger, everyone probably seemed really old, even people who are younger than you are now. Parents, teachers, and coaches seemed like they were in a place that was millions of years away! And yet, here you are! Do you feel old? Or do you still feel like that kid?

Your kickboxing workout doesn’t have to remind you of your age. Your state of mind can make you hit the mat as any person you want to be. It will also make that hour a lot more fun!

Kickboxing perfected over thirty years.

Learn authentic Kickboxing proven to get you in shape and keep you safe.

Did you want to be a dinosaur hunter? Show that velociraptor your left hook!

Did you want to be a firefighter? Kick that door down!

Did you want to be a superhero? Fight those evil villains!

Did you want to be a spy? Show those bad guys just how skilled and slick you really are!

Did you want to be a human fireball with the energy of the sun? Give every second your all and don’t stop until cool-down! (Because the sun is hot and is not scheduled to cool down for a long, long time.)

Strength training at the ends of kickboxing is rewarding

Building lean muscle

But the most important thing to keep in mind is how uninhibited you were as a kid. When you were wrapped up in a game or your own imagination, did you really care about anything else? Sure, you didn’t have the responsibilities you have now, like work, kids, or bills. But that’s the point of your kickboxing workout — that hour should take you away from those distractions for a little while.

Growing up doesn’t mean becoming someone you would have found embarrassing as a kid. That kid is still in there somewhere — you just need to let them out once in a while!
