My weight loss journey started a few years ago. I signed my son up for a trial class because he was being bullied in middle school. My son was reluctant to take the class. So I promised him that if he liked the class, I would take the class with him. Needless to say, he liked the class. Since I had tried to get him interested in a martial arts program since he was 5 years old, I was thrilled! However, I was a little concerned since at the time I was in the worst shape of my life. At 278 lbs, I could not walk a flight of stairs with becoming winded. But I promised my son that I would take the class with him…so I sucked it up!

Right from the start, Sensei Zapfel was great! He was very solicitous. Even though I do not believe he thought I would follow through with my training, he made sure I felt comfortable in class and did not over exert myself…probably afraid I would have a heart attack on the mat! 🙂 Every step of the way, he was always very encouraging and quick to give an “atta girl”…and he never let me rest on my laurels.

It was clear to see that Sensei lived what he taught in class. That, and the fact that he seemed to care that his students achieved all their goals, whether they be weight loss, strength gains, flexibility or learning self defense, is what makes him such an effective motivator. For someone who is known to be very headstrong and a nonconformist, I was very surprised that I embraced his instruction the way I did. But it made sense…and by the end of class I was so tired that I would do anything just to rest! LOL

It is not that Sensei and Tiger Schulmann teach anything “new”. They teach the basic principles of fitness — nutrition, cardio/strength training, flexibility and discipline…(See Sensei..I was listening!). What makes the program effective is that the core tenets of fitness and weight loss are coupled with a great staff and a friendly atmosphere. The training sessions are rigorous… but oh so addictive! I knew I found the right program when I felt out of sorts when I missed a class.

After 6 months of training, I had more energy than I have had in 15 years. So much energy that I signed up for the Avon Walk. For the next 9 months, I trained to build the stamina and endurance to complete the 1.5 marathon walk. Sensei encouraged me along the way as he dragged me kicking and screaming off of my knees when doing push ups. Because of the nutritional instruction which provided me with incredible weight loss and training I receive under Sensei, I completed my first Avon Walk!

Too many people talk of going on diets, when in reality diets don’t work and always make you unhealthier.  A diet that helps you lose weight rapidly is usually causing you to lose muscle, obviously not the fitness result people are looking for.  When you finish the diet, either because it’s too difficult to continue with or the “goal” weight has been reached, most people will go off the diet and their eating habits will cause them to gain all the weight back, plus a lot more.  This weight will consist of mainly fat tissue, so essentially what happened was muscle was lost and fat was gained, so now the individual is more unhealthy than when they started the “DIET.”  Instead, a change of eating habits that can be maintained permanently should be adopted.

Martial Arts Students in Wayne Getting Ready for Competition

The Challenge of Champions will be unrolling its mats again this December at the Raritan Center in Edison NJ.  Thousands of competitors are gearing up now preparing for this, the largest Mixed Martial Arts tournament of its kind in the country.

The largest martial arts tournament in the northeast will be held in December.

Many martial arts organizations hold tournaments.  Many of them are discipline specific, forms, weapons, point sparring and grappling only.  Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts has been holding this one of a kind competition twice a year for 18 years now.  Some students compete in grappling only, and others enroll in the sparring competition, not point sparring where a referee stops the action every time contact is made though; continuous sparring, similar to a boxing or professional kickboxing match where the judges use the 10 point must system to determine the winner.

The third type of event, MMA is the most realistic form of self defense.  MMA combines kickboxing with wrestling and grappling, what you see on television in the UFC.  So a student can not only stand up and deliver strikes to their opponent, but if they choose to go to the ground or somehow end up there, the competition will continue.  Mixed Martial Arts is exactly that, the combination of many forms of martial arts so that whatever is needed can be used to prepare the individual for any situation.

My Thoughts on the Bullying epidemic as it stands now.

This past weekend I saw an anti-bullying news story on Dateline NBC.  They hired a few kids, two to act as bullies and one to be the victim, and put other kids in the room as well to see how they react.  Joining in or standing up for the victim.  It was interesting.  The thing that concerns me about this story was they were studying the actions of the “audience”.  Most times bullies do need an audience for their behavior, and if they get laughs they’ll ramp up the attack.  They mentioned over and over again which kids stood up for the victims, who laughed feeding the bullies fire, and how others reacted as well. It started out as a story on witnessing bullies.  Too many times others were expected to stand up for the victim.  Why isn’t the victim expected to stand up for themselves?

At the end of the story they shifted to a girl who got upset when she saw the bullying because she is being bullied herself.  She was told to “find” the courage to stand up for herself.  “Find” it???  How can a young pre-teen or teen be expected to find her courage.  Does she go looking behind trees, or under rocks?  Its not possible to act confident or be confident without our own achievements.  Courage can’t be found if you do nothing build it up!  And what is it that builds confidence?  Achievement!  Anything a kid does that helps achieve real significant goals will build confidence.

I’m not saying kids who have confidence won’t be picked on but the confidence from all the achievement will help them stand up for themselves and put a quick end to the bullying!

 

There a lot of different experts that will give you some similar and often contradicting advice, but my advice is get your child into an organized activity that will allow him or her to achieve some goals and you’ll see their confidence grow. I have seen many kids overcome bullies with the confidence of training in the martial arts.  Tiger Schulmann’s has been teaching anti-bullying for 30 years.  Increased strength, flexibility, and not to mention actual mixed martial arts techniques that teach you self defense, standing up or on the ground, will do wonders for your child’s confidence, I can promise you that.

Part 3: A Physical Conditioning Program Must Include…

The three aspects of any effective physical conditioning program are Cardio, Strength Training, and Flexibility.

At the end of any workout that gets your heart rate up, builds muscle and gets you sweating, be sure to include Flexibility Training.  Building muscles stronger without stretching them will cause them to become stronger, but shorter in length, creating less range of motion.  The proper way to stretch as indicated by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is to hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds to the point of slight discomfort and repeat two to four times.  There are no exact rules as to which stretches to include or duration of stretching session, but try to include most major muscles and spend 10-20 minutes stretching every day.

To avoid “overstretching” make sure you only stretch real hard on days you really warm the muscles up good with a strenuous workout.  Don’t stretch with full intensity every day, for example, if you work out three days a week, then stretch hard on those three days after the workout, and just a light flexibility workout on the other days.

Depending on your age, genetics, and overall fitness, everyone will experience different results from their flexibility training as part of your physical conditioning.  Some may see quick gains in flexibility limits while others may see very minimal or no gains initially.  Do not be discouraged by this.  Realize, as with anything, time will allow you see results, just don’t give up before you start to see them.  Even if you don’t notice your flexibility limits increasing, you may feel less and less discomfort when stretching, and that is a great result right there.

Make stretching a part of every workout

Most adults will never achieve full splits if they never had them when younger. But, the most important part of flexibility training is not to get into a split, but to increase your range of motion, and prevent injury during working out.  I have seen adult students who were barely able to cross their legs in a pretzel stretch initially, and after a few weeks or months, get 50-100% further.  It all comes down to consistency. Just as with any part of your physical conditioning program, consistency is the key to being in shape all year round.

Keep your body hydrated, ingesting appropriate amounts of water helps with muscle and skin elasticity.  Dehydrated muscles, lead to cramping and decreasing of flexibility.  So keep drinking lots of water and stretching, these are essential elements to overall fitness.

This concludes the three part discussion on total fitness which as mentioned above includes muscular development, cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility.  Be sure to go back and refresh yourself on the first two parts as were previously discussed.  Good luck to everyone in their quest to be stronger, more flexible, and healthier.

Any Effective Physical Conditioning Program Must Have…

Physical Conditioning Part 2: Cardiovascular Conditioning

Any effective physical conditioning program must include three parts. strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and flexibility. Cardiovascular Conditioning builds your body’s engine, your heart and lungs.  By increasing your heart and lungs you will increase your energy levels and burn lots of calories.

The type of cardiovascular conditioning done in Tiger Schulmann’s is known as interval training.  It is high intensity bursts of energy alternated with periods of rest.

Kickboxing provides the best workout you’ve ever gotten in one hour.

Each time you begin a training interval it is important to push yourself to the fullest.  This will allow your heart rate to achieve higher and higher levels with each maximum reaching a new level. For instance your first interval may get your heart rate to 130 beats per minute, then 140 on the next interval, 150, back down to 140, then way back up to 170bpm.  Each rest period is designed to allow your heart rate to come down between intervals. This is the smartest and  most efficient form of physical conditioning.

This type of training will burn more calories during the workout and also help to build more muscle.

Real Life Self Defense Training in Tiger Schulmann’s Kickboxing Class. Not to mention the best cardio workout.

You are also conditioning your heart to deal with unforeseen stresses that cause your heart to race.  Interval training is just that, intense training for a specified interval, with short rests in between.  The alternative is your basic aerobic workout which is a few minute warm up at a light cardio pace, a 30-45 minute conditioning bout at a moderate intensity level, then a few minute cool down.  Your body really needs that high intensity burst of energy alternated with periods of rest to give it maximum results.

When you really push yourself, you will feel your heart pumping and your respiration rate elevated. Deep breaths will help you relax.  Two breaths in and hold, then one slow breath out.  Breathe in deep to fill your lungs with as much air as possible, hold it in to allow your body to absorb all the oxygen that it can, then slowly let it out before you take another deep breath. An effective physical conditioning program will get in shape quickly.

If you are in shape and got your heart rate up close to it’s maximum and your breathing rate was also peaked, you will get back to a normal breathing rate after three deep breaths.

Nutrition is very important for you be able to push yourself to the fullest during your workout.  Eat something light at least an hour before working out.  Make sure it has plenty of complex carbohydrates to allow for maximum energy levels, and also studies have shown, sandwiching protein before and after a workout helps with muscle gains.  So make sure your meal before any workout session is balanced and in correct portion size to allow you to give it your all during the session.

Anti-Bullying in School: What Every Parent Should Know

Now that “back to school” has arrived, so has many new other things!  New clothes, supplies, teachers and friends. New activities and new bullies. It is the law in New Jersey that every school offers some type of anti-bully program. This is a great concept on paper but it really depends on what is being taught.

Most schools say there is no bullying or have embraced a zero tolerance policy when it comes to bullying.

What exactly does that mean? Not only does it mean that bullying will not be tolerated, it also means defending yourself against bullying will not be tolerated. The kids are taught that they should ignore the bully or try to befriend them or make them laugh and that they should tell the teacher. We were all in school once and experienced or saw bullying first hand and we know these tactics don’t work. Bullies pick on kids they deem weak and trying to stop bullying using the above methods will only make the victim seem weaker.

Imagine if our country was attacked and we chose to ignore or befriend our attacker, does that seem like a logical solution? Of course not, but that is what we expect from our children who are the future leaders of our country. That is just hypocritical.

What the schools don’t realize and what must be taught is an equal and assertive response to whatever level of aggression the bully is displaying.

There are 3 levels of bullying and the appropriate response to each must be learned and followed through on. This will be the focus of Bully Shield, Tiger Schulmann’s Bully Prevention Program. We must teach our children to stand up for themselves the way we would stand up as adults or as a country. This is the only effective way to handle bullying.

 It takes confidence to stand up to a bully. One of the main building blocks of confidence is the security that comes with knowing how to defend yourself.

Why would someone choose to back down to a bully? Simply because they are afraid that they will get hurt. As a parent ask yourself this question. If a bully just punched my child in the face what would you want them to do? Physical Conditioning Part 1

Any effective physical conditioning program has three parts; muscular development, cardiovascular exercise, and flexibility.  A complete workout will not only allow you to create that overall feeling of fitness, but also help you stay healthy and injury free. Strength and flexibility work together to keep your joints in line, give you increased balance and agility, and improve your overall range of motion with less chance of pulling or straining a muscle.  And as everyone knows cardiovascular conditioning will increase your stamina and energy for those hikes, bike rides, pick-up games, and general running around chasing after the kids.  So unless your workout regularly hits all three aspects of physical conditioning, it is incomplete!

Starting with muscular development, the only way to actually make your muscles stronger is through resistance to your movements.  Most people think of this as weight lifting, body weight exercises, or resistance band training, creating some form of resistance for your muscles as they go through their range of motion. These are all typical activities you will see in a gym or with a personal trainer.  More and more people are now moving away from the gym scene to martial arts training for the excitement and amazing results towards your physical conditioning.

Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts provides resistance in the form of heavy bags, training pads, and body weight exercises. No weights, No machines, just great martial arts training!  Every punch and kick met with the resistance of the pads or bags works on strengthening the arms, core and legs.  Body weight exercises are also part of every class and in addition to strength building also improve cardio.  Two of three essential elements of complete physical conditioning.

Every strength building exercise, if done correctly, with intensity and proper form will create the “burn.”  This feeling of muscular engagement and fatigue is essential to building strength and endurance.  Don’t stop exercising when you feel this burn, but keep working through it, this is what your muscles need to get to the next level.  This is where the phrase “No Pain, No Gain,” comes from, but be cautious; too much pain and you can overwork the muscles.  Pain can be a stronger word than what you want to look for maybe more of a slight discomfort…

After every workout, to make sure all your work has the potential to payoff, you need to refuel your body with the appropriate nutrition.  After a hard workout, your muscles need protein.  You didn’t get any stronger during the actual workout you just went through, but will achieve the muscular gain during the recovery phase, where you muscles will repair themselves and get stronger, leaner and more tone.  So make sure within a half hour after your workout you get a substantial serving of protein into your system. See our Nutritional Guidelines sheet for information on sources and serving sizes for protein.  Do not underestimate the importance of nutrition as far as your physical conditioning goes.

It is really kind of sad, that so much effort, time and resources have been wasted on trying to legislate bullying out of existence.  Many of these programs have already been labeled failures by the school systems themselves.  Even our state government has legislated what has been called the toughest anti- bully laws in the country.  Unfortunately, what ultimately happens is bullying still goes on and in many instances; good kids who aren’t bullies somehow get caught in the bureaucratic red tape and get labeled as bullies themselves!
